Default EHD Question

I have decided that I seriously need to get an EHD. I have been "window shopping" online and see that there are so many different ones, it can be a bit overwhelming, so my question is for those who already have an EHD what is your recommendations for which kind to get to store all my scrap stuff. Thanks!

Just research, research, research. Read reviews for each brand.

Make sure that your case is made of aluminum, because it releases heat. If you can find one with a fan, that's the best bet, to keep it cool.

I got one that actually is an internal HD just put in a case (well that's all they are essentially), so I'm not really sure what I've got. I think a Western Digital HD but the case is something totally different. I got mine on eBay.

I have a WD 160 gb Passport for my laptop . . . if you belong to Costco they have a 500GB WD and there's a coupon that expires on the 9th. I think it ends up being around $100 after coupon . . .

I also have a 160 gb Seagate for the desktop.

think I need a bigger one . . .

I have a 2 year old 250GB Western Digital and it's never been anything but awesome. But I want a 500GB to back up my back up to, lol.

Jordan might just build me a new computer anyway, so for now all gadget wants are on hold.

I have two Maxtor EHDs that I've been happy with. I have one like Bree described with the aluminum case and fan and it's lasted several years now. I only use them for backups though so that's probably partly why they last so long.

I bought the 500GB WD from Costco and it died within a week. We had a power outage and that killed it. My other LaCie 250GB and WD 250GB were fine, but the Costco one (which is actually a higher model than my other WD) was just dead, no warning.

Now, this could happen with any HD, which is why you should always have more than one back up plan, but I must admit it gave me pause, and I just got my money back and didn't replace that EHD. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it, but I thought I should mention it. My LaCie has hit the floor hard from table height, it's been through multiple major power outages and is still going strong. My other WD hasn't had a hard fall, but it's been through all sorts of power outages with no issues.

I think I'm going to pick up the LaCie 1TB Raid 0 configured EHD (it's actually 2 500GB drives) on sale at Best Buy this week and use that as the EHD I work off of, and make my old LaCie the one my Mac Time Machine backs up to.
