Default Shopping Struggles

With Easter and wedding season fast approaching, I find myself in the market for some pretty new dresses. Seems simple enough, right? Well...here lately, I can't find ANYTHING I like that fits. If I like the style, it doesn't fit right. If it fits, I'm not crazy about the style.

I always struggle to know where to look because I find most of the styles in the women's section are too frumpy or mature for my tastes, but the juniors section is too teenager-y.

Anyone else have this predicament? My DD and I shopped for literally FOUR hours on Saturday trying to find an Easter dress for me. I was ready to fling myself off the second story of the mall.

I am ALWAYS in that predicament! Last fall I found several dresses that I liked, and even though I only needed 1 I bought all 3, lol! We look about the same size, wish I could lend you one! I seem to have luck every third visit or so at T.J. Maxx. Have you tried there?

Yes, all the time. I'm petite, especially in my shoulders and chest, which makes it near impossible to find anything I like that fits. Anthropologie is one of my favorite stores but oh man are they $$$.

Have you considered renting a dress? Both my sister and I have rented dresses from Rent the Runway and it was so easy. I find you get what you pay for with fit so this allows you to get around that a bit without spending a fortune.

LOVE Anthropologie but can rarely afford to shop there.

I've heard of Rent the Runway but haven't tried them yet. Maybe I should look into it. What happens if you rent something and it doesn't fit though?

Well you get to choose two sizes to be sent to you and I think there's option to add another dress for a small fee if you want a backup option. It's part of the gamble you take although I find reading the fit reviews is really helpful and they have experts you can talk to about the fit before you order as well.

Yes! What is with designers now days... even my mom commented that everything is frumpy when she was at Kohl's, yesterday. I'm what you call "fluffy" ... do all "fluffy" women want to wear such bold colors and patterns? Geez... just a nice flattering dress, that is all I'm asking for... I don't need to look like I'm headlining at a drag show.

For Easter, I ended up buying this one. Yep...out of the Juniors' section, but by that point, I was desperate. It's all fun and games until you show up wearing the same outfit as your teenage daughter's friend.

Well, the only store we have that sells clothes is wal-mart... and well, ass everyone knows their selection isn't great and what they do have is very very basic, so to say that I have the same problem should be understandable. I love dresses, but it is VERY Rare to see someone wearing one unless they are at a Wedding, so I don't see the need to even buy one as I don't want to stand out in the entire area. :S It's kinda sad, but it is what it is.

I love dresses, but rarely find any I like or that look good on me. Last time I needed a nice outfit I ended up just getting a nice pant suit from Dress Barn.

I love that dress you found though!!

I order a good percentage of my clothes online. I like to order in bulk and in various sizes - which has the added bonus of getting me free shipping. Then I just try it all on and pick what I want to keep. I bag up the rest and do a return at the store. For big department stores like The Bay, I find shopping online SO much easier and faster because I can sort by my size and style preferences and just load the cart and checkout. No need to spend ages sifting through the racks at the store.

(...of course I only do this at stores that accept returns for full refunds. If it only offers store credit or exchange, I don't do it online.)

Don't get me started! You saw my FB post about this lol.

I have THE HARDEST time finding anything that fits right. I can normally find shirts but they can't be fitted. My body never bounced back...at all...after I had Kennedy. And I'm ok with that. But damn it I need clothes that fit!!
Pants, shorts, skirts, dresses are 10x worse than shirts. I'm only 4'9" so everything is way to long. I look ridiculous.

Saturday we tried to go shopping at Kohls (which I usually have luck with) and NOTHING fit. I did get a few shirts (nothing fancy and literally solid plain ts and tanks) but seriously I left the store crying.

I like dresses by Adrianna Pappel. You can find many different ones on Amazon at very reasonable prices.

Thanks for the suggestions and for commiserating with me, ladies.

I know that part of my problem is the fact that I need to lose weight, but I haven't been able to accomplish that lately, so for now, the struggle continues to be real.

You're silly.

And thank you, friend, but...American clothing manufacturers would disagree with you on that.

Hate it! None of us, in my immediate family, are easy to shop for. We all struggle to find things that fit.

Kendall that dress is so cute. I still hit the junior's dept. and I'm way older than you are. There really needs to be a dept. between teeny bopper and geriatric with a wider variety of sizes ( on both ends ).

I mostly gave up shopping for dresses. I'm too short for any of them to hit me at the right length. And too curvy on the bottom and small on top... all of the dresses that fit my bottom sag on the top. I like skirts/tops better, but sometimes dresses are a must (for formal events). If I absolutely have to wear a dress, I need to set aside 3 months for dress hunting. I HATE IT.

Heddy, do you ever shop online for clothes with American sites? or just Canadian? I struggle with shopping too, there is such a limited variety in Canada so I'm looking for other options.....and if things need to be returned from online purchases it needs to be easy and free

That sounds wonderful!!! Haha!!!

We went to three weddings this past year alone! And they were too formal for me to wear separates.

Yes, I dread the day I have to shop for another dress, I just go with a skirt if I have to.
Oh, I did wear a dress for my wedding, I guess that counts

UGH! Story of my life! I have very petite shoulders and chest and then I have hips that have carried 4 babies so NOTHING fits right ever at the stores. It's ridiculous! I am not super tall either. I have been ordering LuLaRoe online from consultants and have had the best luck with their clothes so far.

The dress you ended up with is super cute!

Yes! I think I want a Madison skirt... but they look like they might be too long. I'm 5'2 and a half.

The Madison is suuuuper cute! I haven't tried it yet so I can't speak for how it would fit. I'm only 5'4" so a lot of things end up hitting in a weird place on me. I have only tried the dresses so far and really like them. My sister likes the Cassie and Azure though and she's about as tall as me.

Saaaame here, minus the four babies! I'm 5'4" also. Too bad we're not closer, or else we could share clothes!

I've been wanting to try LuLaRoe, but I can't find any consultants near me.

I would love that! I have been ordering all my LLR online. All of my consultants are amazing and have done exchanges when needed!

Oh man, I feel for you. It's fun to go to ONE wedding, but that many... it gets old. Hopefully you can use the same dress for a couple of them? Or are they all the same social circle?

All but one are the same circle of friends. I'm gonna have to get creative in my closet because there's no way I can handle (mentally or financially) shopping for that many dresses!

Gah!!! That stinks! You could buy a really simple dress and change out your accessories... like a statement necklace or belt. Like this... http://www.babble.com/style/how-to-w...liday-parties/

I love dresses... on other people
I dunno...I have a few in my wardrobe but I've never worn most of them.
I don't like stockings and hate the fact I need to wear them because I just can't do without it -- chub rub and stuff you know.
Another thing...It's hard for me to find good fitting dresses because of larger hips and smaller bust. And I have a tummy which I hate and most dresses don't hide it. Contour cuts? Thanks but no thanks
I've worn dresses on special events and I like how I look in them but, seriously, in my everyday I prefer trendy comfort than dresses no matter how cute/classy/pretty they look.
To be honest, I hardly see women wearing dresses on the streets here.
Last, but no least - I believe dresses look best on women with smaller waist and larger bust. AAand, since it's not the case with me, I avoid them.

I'm only 5'2" and the Madison isn't terribly long on me - I ordered a size down to try to combat that. It's maybe a touch longer than I'd normally like but not terrible!

I struggle with dresses because of my belly pooch. I'm liking the Lularoe dresses and skirts I've tried. But that's just because they're stretchy and fairly forgiving.

I will openly say that I am plus size (working hard to change that) and the only things available to that size is big prints that says "Big Mama coming through get out of the way".

What is wrong with clothing manufacturers that they can't make clothes in varying sizes but not absolutely awful.
