Coraline - a movie review
This was a GREAT movie. I'm not typically a fan of Tim Burton, but I loved this movie. It was artistically wonderful....and pretty cool because we saw it in Disney Real 3D.
There were a couple of pretty inappropriate scenes for our family, and the suspense did get to even my 9yo and we had to hold hands for part of the movie. The 5yo had to close his eyes quite a few times. But for DH and myself, it was wonderful - and we got quite a chuckle out of the two theater sisters, LOL. I don't recommend this for the younger set, 3 - 6. But we have sensitive boys to suspense, so that affects how we felt about it. DH and I would've enjoyed this alone on a date night, even without the boys. The 9yo does love it now and wants to buy it when it comes out! |

My dd Natalie who will be 7 in April is dying to see this movie ever since she caught the previews. I am holding off, because all of the reviews recommended ages 10+. I told her when it comes out on video, we would see.
-Thanks for your insight Darcy!

Funny you should post this Darcy because I was just looking up movie times to take my DD's tomorrow. Chelsea is 5 1/2 and Haley is 8 almost 9. I can't wait to see it

Thanks Darcy! I want to see it but wasn't sure about my 5 1/2 year old (and my 3 year old can't sit through a movie anyway). I think I may have to go it alone as DH also isn't into Tim Burton, but maybe...

If it helps any of your decisions...
There is a scene where two old fat ladies (they look a lot like me!) are doing a stage play, and one is dressed like a burlesque star once she's removed most of her clothes. Just a couple of sparkly pasties and gstring - and she might as well have been nekkid cause she has quite large bazzooms which go everywhere. There is a scene with ghost children, there is some tea reading, and the ending scenes with the 'other mom' are quite scary for little ones. Some of the nice characters turn bad during the final sequences because of the manipulation by the 'other mom'. And those are the only ones I can remember right now. Connor (9yo) was quite embarrassed by the nekkidness (or close to it) which is something we don't allow at home, and didn't know was going to be in the movie. He had a hard time with the ending scenes. The 5yo was just a bit disturbed on and off through the whole thing. However, again, DH and I LOVED it and snickered with the fat ladies. The 3D is awesome and they didn't go out of their way to try to show you how cool they could do 3D. The artistry in the film is wonderful. It's a bit longer than the average kiddie cartoon. |

Have any of you read the book? I am leery to go see it because it just looks so wrong - as in not following the book. If you have read the book was it soo off that it made it not enjoyable?
