Default Call for Nominations: Sweet Read Jan-March 2015

Sweet Reads for 2015: Each quarter we will hold nominations and vote for one book to be our 'Sweet Read' for the quarter. Once we have a book selected, there will be two threads in our Sweet Reads forum, one for general chit chat about the book and reading progress, but no spoilers and another for book discussion, spoilers allowed.

Post your nomination(s) for our first Sweet Read of 2015 here. If someone has already nominated your choice, go ahead and 'second' their nomination, just in case we get lots of nominations and I have to narrow the field for the vote

Nominations close at the end of the day Wednesday, Jan. 7th.

Voting will be Jan. 8-11.

ETA: Nominations are now closed. Vote here through Sunday (1/11).

I've got 3 to nominate. All are at the top of my "to read" list, so these are purely selfish choices. LOL

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

This one was recently read and discussed in an online bookclub that I'm a part of, but I didn't have a chance to read it. I heard rave reviews about it and how much everyone enjoyed it, so I'm very anxious to read it myself.

------------------------------------------------

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

I'm nominating this because it made a couple of SSDers' lists of top reads of 2014.

---------------------------------------------------------

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

I'm nominating this one because my daughter (who hates to read) read it and enjoyed it. It was recently made into a movie, so those are always fun reads for me when I know I can see the film soon after finishing.

------------------

I'm sure I could nominate more, but I don't want to be a hog! LOL These are just some of my recent purchases that are waiting to be read.

ETA this is seconded of the nomination above (cross posted). Another selfish one - this is one of a batch I have just bought myself for
Christmas.

ETA again I've looked at If I Stay but couldn't bring myself to buy it - my youngest daughter is called Mia, she has some medical issues and I just knew I would take it too personally. Perhaps that's just me being weird?

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August sounds really good!

I'll probably read whatever is nominated or isn't Always looking for good books to read (whether they are brand new or old!)

If I stay is good but maybe not for a quarterly read? Its not all that in depth... jmo

I second The Goldfinch, that sounds really interesting.

I also nominate Orphan Train.

Lots of great ideas already. Looks like we won't need to wait a week for a good group of choices. I'm going to shorten the nomination period to three days and then open up voting through the weekend.

I second The Goldfinch. Put that is incredibly selfish of me --I happen to be on page 51 right now! Lol! I have heard rave reviews from friends about this book.

And I'd like to add that I think quarterly is a good plan. I participated in a book club that was monthly (in real life) and I felt like I always had to read the book club books and never got to read anything of my choosing. I'm excited about this!

The Goldfinch was one of my favorite reads this year and Ready Player One made my faves list a couple years ago. Completely different books.

I have both The Miniaturist and The First Fifteen Lives of Henry August on my To Read list, so I'd happily go for either of those.

You make an excellent point about If I Stay not being really in-depth enough for a quarterly discussion. It's still one I want to read because my daughter loved it, but I agree that it might not have enough "meat" for a good book club discussion.

My only thought against Goldfinch is that I've heard repeatedly that it's sooooooooooooooooooo long. I don't mind long books for the most part if they are super engaging, but I'm not sure that this story sounds "exciting" enough to hold my attention for almost 800 pages.

Cool! There's a book club here too? This place just keeps getting better.

edited to add: I am currently reading Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee, but I'm not quite half-way and unsure I'd want to recommend it. I don't have a nomination and will probably be happy to read whatever is voted in.

The First Fifteen Lives of Henry August sounds pretty interesting to me. I haven't read in a long time so being a little book club would be pretty fun!

I'm in this boat! The Goldfinch has been on my list for a while, but I'd happily read any of the nominations so far except If I Stay. Already read that one. ;-)

I'll read pretty much anything nominated here.

Have the Goldfinch and have heard awesome things about it. The fact that it is longer may make it perfect for a quarterly read.

Ive already ready Ready Player One and If I stay, but everything else sounds pretty cool!

Excited!

Add me to the list of people who own the Goldfinch and need a excuse to read it.

The First fifteen Lives of Henry August sounds good. I'm open to trying any of the books mentioned, really!
