QOTD - Mountains or Beach? - 10.24.15
We went and visited the mountains today one last time before the move. I have found myself (unexpectedly) a very big fan of them.
Beaches, on the other hand, make my skin catch on fire. So, are you a beach bum or a mountain maven? |

That is a tough one for me.... I love the ocean but I love the mountains here too. We have a summer place on the lake with a gorgeous view of the mountains and while it's not the ocean I get a beach on the water with my mountains in the background - the best of both worlds

My ideal home would have both. But I do love the beach the most. We just took a drive along the beach tonight on our way home from dinner with the car windows open. The moon was reflecting on the water like threads of silver light. The salty air was cool and whipped through my hair and on my face like a kiss. And the sound of the waves. Ah.... the ocean is not just for hot sunny days. It's soothing any time of the day. All year long. The mountains are fantastic, too. There's nothing more majestic than a beautiful mountain in the distance. But I've always lived with the ocean nearby. Not sure I could be away from it.

I love both.... I'd have to say i'm a shore girl though... What are considered "mountains" here are just big hills compared to what i've seen just a state below so i don't consider us having real mountains here. I don't necessarily love the beach though... I like the shore better.... Rocks, boats, lighthouses.... Sand is nice but not a requirement

hmm... I don't know... I'm not an outdoorzy person, so hiking or climbing big rocks isn't appealing... then the beach... sand give me hives...
I like to look at both, but prefer flat, land-locked views.

Mountains. I'm not a big beach person -- too sandy and salty, which is even worse when it all gets smeared into your sunscreen. I do like to surf though but then go take a shower.

I live in the mountains and love it but I wish I was closer to the ocean.. Not necessarily THERE but a couple hours drive would be ideal. I am not one for hot sunny places but rocky, cold beaches. please take me there.
I currently am extremely jealous of brook after that description fyi.. |

Can I say mountains near a large, ocean-like lake? Although there is something so soothing about the sounds of the ocean hitting the shore...hmmm. This is SO hard because I really love both. I definitely don't need a tropical beach though, I'm good with beaches in the cooler climates for sure. I want all the scenery I don't have here.

...until Grace closed her fingers in the car window and started screaming and I didn't know what was happening (because I was driving) and I accidentally closed her window even more. And then I pulled over, checked her very sore fingers and we went home. So yeah. |

Both. New Zealand is a long skinny country, full of mountains, and beaches, and you can easily do both in the same day. The mountains in our South Island are the ones you see on Lord of the Rings, so super majestic, and nowhere in the country is more than 180kms from the sea, so we have the best of both worlds. I love the mountains, and we camp at the beach every summer.

We don't have sandy beaches (or real beaches as I call them) here. There is one or two throughout Norway, but none where we live. So I LOVE the beach! As long as I get to go to the beach in France or somewhere with a proper beach.
We have too many mountains, so I'm kinda over it.

I'm not really an outdoor person, but I like to think that I like to see both...
I grow up on an island, so we have beach all around, but I don't really like the sand sticking on my feet lol... I love the beauty of mountains, but I don't really enjoy hiking

Secret option #3-cities. Mountains are fine, and every year we go with my extended family on vacation to the mountains in an area with lots of lakes for swimming. Beaches are nice, too. But after a couple days of either, we're over it and wishing we were near a city with more to do.

As much as I love hearing the surf crash on the beach, I don't like going in the water -- too many unseen underwater things that could easily gooble me up. So I guess I am more of a mountains person, especially if it is sitting in a cabin with a nice warm fire and some marshmallows for roasting!!

Both! I need to have both to really feed my soul. Not so much to sunbathe at the beach or ski, but both of them are just magical and make me happy.

Yes! LOL! I grew up about 500 yards from the Gulf of Mexico, and I miss it so much, but I don't miss all the hurricanes or the heat.
I've been pretty lucky since leaving Florida that every place I lived had mountains that I could see (except for here). So what Sara says would be perfect. Quote:

I hate the sand, the smell of the fish and swimming in nature's toilet. The beach and I are NOT friends.
However, I love the view, the smell of clean, fresh air. I love the mountains in the fall with the changing of the leaves!! I could live on a mountain the rest of my life! |

Having lived by both, I prefer the mountains (though with a lake). I enjoy visiting beaches, but find the sand too messy for daily life...

I didn't know people like you actually exist, who like flat, landlocked views!
I love both! In the city where we lived in Malaysia, we lived on the beach, but two miles inland the mountains started, so it was perfect.

I love both! But mountains do have to have some sort of water, like waterfalls or a lake I especially love it when you are climbing a mountain and then have a fabulous view on the ocean! That's why I love Australia so much!

having never been to the mountains Id say the beach. I grew up in Florida. We were never more than 30 minutes to the beach. The only sucky part is the sun because I burn so easily. But I could never be more than maybe 30 miles from the ocean. My daughter lives right across the street from the intercoastal water way. I don't remember the name of the river now because there are so many. But its so nice because the breeze is so pleasant on hot days.

I live within easy distance of both, and enjoy seeing both. Ideally, I would pick the ocean, as long as there was no sand involved

I LOVE my mountains!! I also love the ocean. I would love to live somewhere that had easy access to both. But, if I were forced to choose, I don't think I could give up the mountains. They're part of me.
