I'll be watching this thread. I need this too.
Long ago I used ACDsee and it really worked for me. I have a newer version and I can't seem to find what I want.

Watching for ideas too. Since I've got a new computer everything is a massive mess. I have 2 or 3 copies of some kits and I have no idea how or why haha.

If you do a quick forum search there are a lot of existing threads on this topic (with screenshots) you will find useful. I know I saw one pretty recently - probably within the last month. We also have at least one tutorial on this. There are so many different ways to organize things .. and it also depends on how much you plan to reuse your stash and/or whether you're someone who likes to mix/match kits or just kit scrap.

I save my digi-stash by store, designer and then by product:
My templates are stored by photo amount and then if I have a lot of templates by someone, like Cindy Schneider, Crystal Livesay, etc, they have their own folder under "Individual Designer" |

If you're on a Mac, you can tag your kit/template folders. I love it because I don't have to do anything but remember to tag and you can add as many tags as you want. No folder organization required! For example, one kit could be tagged with the store, designer, theme, colors, etc. Basically anything you'd want to be able to search for.

I adopted the organization from this tutorial about 2 years ago and I love it, I could never go back to sorting by store/designer again! I especially love the templates being stored by # of photos, works way better for me actually finding what I want when I want it. I have a Mac too, so I tag them with colour by store (purple for SSD) so that if I'm doing a challenge I can filter by store and not just search by Designer.

I have everything sorted by store/designer, but also have another file that has previews for kits in themed folders, and a separate folder for # of photos for templates (these are duplicates of the templates).
