Do any of you buy your kids Halloween candy back on Halloween night?
I don't remember where I got the idea, but I started this a couple of years ago. On Halloween night, after trick-or-treating and when my kids are sitting on the floor with their stash dumped out in front of them, they have the option to "sell" me some candy. They are welcome to keep it all, get rid of a few pieces, or make some serious cash, lol They get .25 per piece. (I know I probably should have started them at .10 per piece, but too late now..I can't go backwards on them now).
Last year, my (then) 10 year-old dd parted with 2/3 of her pile and made $30! My (then) 8 year-old decided to keep every last piece of hers, lol It's totally up to them. I will admit that I'm more than happy to "buy" the candy (which then goes to our Senior Citizen's center)...the less sugar in their diet, the better. It's a win-win for all!

We keep our candy because Jeffrey never goes to many houses (about 30) and doesn't get much candy. We also never end up eating it all-- we finally threw away the leftovers of what little Halloween candy we got last year about a month ago! We don't really eat much anyway, and we don't get a whole lot as it is... so the whole buying back thing doesn't work in our family... but it's a cool concept, and I may someday do it with Zach!

I have a friend who does a candy fairy. A week after Halloween all the leftover candy is left out overnight and the fairy takes it and leaves a toy in its place.
We do experiments with candy to see what floats, melts, burns, etc...but I assure you no chocolate is harmed...just the crappy sugary candy.

we only go to a couple houses so we don't have much candy... and the stuff we get from the trunk or treat at a local church we give away when TOTers come to our house.

That's a cool idea!
My kids don't usually end up with too much candy. They will go around the block and hit all the houses on one side of the street, usually by then, they will be freezing cold and decide it's not worth freezing over, especially since we have the bowl of candy at home. They usually eat like 5-8 pieces that night, and then a few weeks later, after all the good stuff has been picked through by the hubby and I, I just throw it out. They've never asked for it back or missed it.

same here...but because my kids have a birthday in November I always got rid of their candy at their party LOL. Id let them eat as much as they wanted on halloween (usually a few candy bars) and then have one or two pieces a day until their birthday party in November (usually around November 9th). All three of my kids quit trick-or-treating in their early teens (my youngest said he is to old at 14 this year, my middle son quit around 12 or 13 and my oldest quit at 13 and then went with her brother when she was 18)

No, we ration it instead. They get to eat 5-6 pieces that night & then a piece a day after that. They tend to lose interest in it well before Thanksgiving & I pitch what is left. They don't candy much the rest of the year so I don't have any problem letting them have it at Halloween. Also they only go to one smallish trunk or treat thing or a Halloween party so they do't end up with that much to begin with

No we have never done that but my brother does....he is addicted to the hard candy that my boys don't eat so it's a win win!!!
My boys NEVER eat all their candy...ever! We always have it left over for months and months. They lose interest fast. Our dentist office will buy back candy as well but we have never done that. This year we'll have three trick or treating....Derek has a bag and we'll let him go up to a few houses but he'll mostly just go along for the ride....he can't eat the candy so there's no point of having more candy lying around!!!

Yep! We have always done this. My kids don't really care for most of the candy anyway,. maybe because we've always done this? We take out a few items that they like and then exchange the rest of it for a gift. We're especially opposed to hard, sugary candies. I just imagine my kids' teeth rotting when they eat this stuff. Ugh! I figure a gift at Halloween (and Easter too!) is probably cheaper than expensive dental work!

No. They are allowed one piece each when we get home. Then I go through their buckets and divide the candy up. Last year Troy got 5 pieces of chocolate and 10 pieces of other candy. Rachel got 4 pieces of chocolate & 8 pieces of other candy. The rest went to me or into a reward bucket for good behavior.
I'm planning on doing the same thing this year. They are still young enough (well maybe not Troy) that they don't really remember just how full their buckets where the night before.

this is such a good idea! usually I go through their candy and take much of it away.. but my daughter is 8 now and old enough to realize that her mom is up to no good.. i don't like them having so much junk either and it seems as these days you go to a house and they give you a handful of it instead of a piece.. i might have to try this out and see!

The "Halloween Witch" comes to our house to collect the extra candy to share with other boys & girls.
The kids just pick 10 pieces that they want to keep for the week & 5 they can eat that night, the rest they put back in their buckets and put them outside for the witch. She brings them a small gift, or something. This year Keira is getting a polly pocket & Coop is getting a matchbox car w/ a spider. And they both are getting a Halloween book. |

My kids get one per day for that week. The rest goes to us to eat. Usually we throw away whatever is left over.

Yah I eat it too. Especially the chocolate and when they're not looking.
I like this idea though. We really try to limit the number of houses and only go within 1-2 blocks of the neighborhood. |

We let the girls pick out what they want the most and then DH and I split what's left and take it to work. However this year I'm going to figure out where to donate it so it gets sent to the soliders in care packages for Christmas. My oldest just got braces so most of what she gets she won't be able to eat anyway.

Ours are allowed a few pieces after the carnival, then 1 piece a day for about two weeks. Then the most favorite candy that hasn't been eaten is put into the candy jar, and the rest is donated to the food pantry at church.

We don't eat too much candy the rest of the year, so I just let them enjoy it for Halloween. The day of Halloween we let them eat about 5 pieces, then the next day the kids each run a store to sell (trade) the candy they don't want to each other. Then we let them eat 2 pieces a day until it's gone or they lose interest. My younger kids are 5 and 3 and don't like most of what they get, so between the ones they don't like and the ones DH and I stealthily remove from their bags to eat, they're done in week or two. My oldest is 8 and remembers EVERY SINGLE CANDY he had, so there's no snacking from his bag. He loves the sugary junk that the other 2 won't eat, so his candy lasts a lot longer. But he still only gets 2 pieces a day, and if he eats his candy it's instead of the small after dinner treat they usually get.

No I never bought my kids candy back. I only ate the Almond Joys because they didn't like them.
