Default i is sad and scared

i mentioned in my netflix thread my laptop shutting down w/o warning. well it shut down this morning but I wasn't watching Netflix.

I think it's overheating . I'm letting it cool off for a bit and then I will be backing up! and then calling tech support.

anyone have those laptop chill hub things? do they work?

*must remember to back up font and actions*

If it's overheating it could be that the fan went, which isn't a big deal at all to fix.

I use this for my laptop at all times, but it's not always connected and turned on. Just having it elevated helps wtih airflow and circulation and stops it from getting SUPER hot. And it's pretty comfy on your lap too.

hmm I don't know how to tell if the fan is kaput. but now that you mention it . .. for a few days i was hearing a funny sound, whirry/clicky . . .. now nothing. . .

the cooling stand looks interesting. maybe I will try to elevate my laptop somehow . . .

Kay, does your laptop feel hot?

Most fans now are super duper quiet, but you should still be able to hear it if you're listening for it. So if you aren't hearing anything and the keyboard is a lil toasty, then your fan died.

My first HP when I was a freshman was a lemon. I sent it in 4 times to fix the fan before I went up the chain of command and demanded a new unit. Never had a single problem wtih that one, the only reason I don't use it cuz it's so old it wouldn't run Elements, let alone CS2, lol.

Mine has done this a few times but it's my own fault for taking it to bed and getting all cosy with my duvet wrapped around me and the laptop - I don't think they like being cosy

I use this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834998685

My laptop fan hardly ever comes on because the fans keep it so cool. I like that it has an adjustable fan speed. I had to get this one to fit my 17in screen.

ooh that looks cool, Amanda (no pun intended ha ha ha ha)

now do you guys think it's too much to have 3 USB powered things attached at the same time? 2 portable EHDs, and a cooling thing?

ROFL! Right now I have my mouse, tablet, fan and card reader attached. I did get a wireless USB hub so I don't have to have my EHDs and printer attached. I love that thing.

It is a Belkin:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=390425

But I had the wireless card installed when I bought the laptop.

You can do this:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=377793

(I would check for better prices)

It is well worth the money! My EHDs are up high out of reach from grubby fingers and I can scrap/work on the couch without cords. The only drawback is that it does only work with line-of-sight. So if anything walks between your signal it will drop for a second. But the way my "office" is set up that is not a problem for me.

Dude, that's genius! I'm totally gonna see if Jordan will let me do that. I'd be able to go in the living room and scrap without having to unplug everything, and then drag the power strip down the hall, etc etc.

I really like it. It does not have great reviews but I think those people were expecting way more than the hub can offer. It is a hub, not a router. My antenna is in the top of my laptop screen so as long as I have it within view of the hub (which is up high without anything blocking it) I get a good signal. My desk and the couch are along the same wall so it works for me. I just think of it as a convenience for me and not a tool. Ya know?

I totally hear ya. Jordan's an IT guy, so I'm sure he'll le me know what's feasible, etc. It can't hurt to look into it right?

I wouldn't mind being in the same room with it. We'll see what Jordan come up with, lol.

Oh I've got a cooling pad, too. Love it!! It's always hooked up but doesn't always run.

And heck at any given time I have my chill pad, tablet, and ehd hooked up. That doesn't count the times when I'm hooking up my scanner or card reader.

I need to be like Amanda and look into a wireless USB hub. That sounds pretty dang nifty!

okay, let me figure this out . . .

I have to be in the same room as the wireless hub?
So does the hub attach directly to my router?
I already have a wireless card built into my laptop, so I'm good with that, right?

Not sure on the wireless card since I bought my hub with the laptop. You have to be in the same room and in sight with the hub. Mine does not attach to the router. It is a separate component all on its own. It has a power cord and that is it. No ethernet hookup. You plug in the hub and attach your stuff. There are a few more steps but that is basically it.

I think you would need the little wireless plug thingy that has to plug into your laptop. Like the one for a wireless mouse. Do you understand my really technical terms?

You know I'm not sure?? I have it sitting on one of those slanty lap desk things. Not a cooling pad. I probably should have a cooling pad. I'll feel it tonight and see if it's hot. I have a EHD hooked up but that's all. And it's stuck inside the slanted lap desk thing. It's hollow. The EHD gets real hot. I do know that. And that's probably not real good??

OK, that wireless hub is WAY cool. I think I need one, so I can get some of this crap off my desk, and move them to other surfaces.

I had a cooling pad, and it helps tremendously.
Just recently the wire that connects the two together broke.
So do I buy a new wire, or a new cooling pad??

ohhhhh, so it's not on your network. it's just giving wireless capability to your EHD and such.

is the wireless plug thingy different than what you would use to connect to the internet? do you mean like a dongle?

i went to costco today and and got a chill hub. just a plastic one so I don't know how good it is. and also got a Maxtor 750 gb EHD that is on sale for $135.

This is my setup:

Laptop on desk with 3 usb ports being used: wireless mouse, tablet (when I use it) and chillmat for when I am at the desk.

On shelf: EHDs (right now only one ehd is plugged in)

On top of shelf: wireless usb hub

You would need the wireless hub and the wireless adapter (plugs in your laptop) for it to work. It does not use a router although I think they make something that does work with a router.

I've got a USB hub from APC, it lets you plug in 8 things. It has a jack that you plug into a USB port on your laptop, like a wireless mouse. We have our second EHD on it. It's nice because if DH wants to access it he just has to plug in the jack to his laptop & we don't have to fiddle around with networking things. Of course that means I don't have the jack but I'm not usually on the computer in the evening when he is so it isn't a problem

thanks, Amanda! that does help. and Ruby looks so pretty . My whole house is a "don't ask" zone . Maybe I will clean up the ol' desk area . . ..
But the place I use my lappie is in the family room. Now I am filled with overwhelming need to get a wireless hub.

Ashley, I have two EHDs on my laptop b/c I pretty much filled up the first one, which was only 160gb. So I had to get another one, 320 gb. On our desktop I have another 160 gb but that just basically backs up my laptop EHD. I realized I needed more space so I got a 750 gb EHD today.

We use a chill pad on an older laptop and it works GREAT to help with the overheating.

I have one EHD that has mainly design files on it and a portable because I visit my parents a lot. I am getting another soon that will be dedicated to SSD.

And Ashley- the desk is the only spot in the house that is always clean!

I haven't read all the other responses, but my old laptop had major overheating problems. It got to the point where I couldn't scrap at all because after my first hour of scrapping it would unexpectedly shut down every few minutes, and the LO file would usually end up corrupt and unable to open even if I'd saved religiously. With the help of tech support I updated the bios, which helped, and then I went out and got one of the active cooling mats (active=with fans, passive=just a stand to elevate). It made a HUGE difference, and I used the laptop for another year or so with only an occassional problem. Just be prepared to replace the chill mat every few months--with hours a day use, they don't seem to last well.
