It's only hair, right?
Anyone ever henna their hair?
I'm sitting here with a big glop of it on my head. I have NO idea how this is going to turn out. I have like about an inch of gray roots. I'm fearing the henna is going to make them go red and the rest of my hair will stay dark brown/black. This stuff will probably take forever to get out too. It's like a helmet now. Will try to post a pic tomorrow.

Ummm, Mimi, if I remember correctly Henna is really a 'highlighter' and not a 'color' (its been like 20 years since I was a hairdresser) so it may actually do exactly what you are afraid of but on a positive note, it isn't permanent and because it's grey hair which isn't very porous it will fade quickly!

Yeah I went through a massive henna craze 5 years ago. I was henna'ing it every 4 weeks. It went beautifully soft and silky and shiny! But it is just a highlightener. I have darkish brown hair, and after a few aplications, you could see that it had a slight hint of red to it indoors. And in the sun.. wow!!! red sparkles everywhere, it was great!
It's actually not recommended for grey or blonde hair as it might go bright orange That stuff stains skin so badly too, I had to put pawpaw oitment all over my ears, and my hairline, and I STILL needed to scrub my poor skin to get the orange out. And just a word of warning, if you dye your hair at the salon while the henna is still in (or even at home with regular colours), you might get some nasty reactions with weirdo colour results, so be careful. I have blonde highlights, and as soon as they grow out, i'm going to start with the henna again I used to leave it on all day, keep it warm (intensifies the colour) and I used to add things like tea, paprikia, lemon and even cheap wine into the mix to get different shades The wine made it go more dark red, rather than orange red, tea was a more golden/brown red, paprika was for BRIGHT red and lemon supposedly was to make it stick to your hair more. And yes, it's only hair No biggie, it will grown out. Let us know how you go! Last edited by lisarose; 11-23-2008 at 07:37 PM. |

Lisa, you are making me nervous! I have colored my hair at home before and that is still in my hair but the Lush people said their henna was OK with previously colored hair. They do recommend doing a strand test but I like to live on the edge .
I still haven't washed it out. So still don't know . . ..

Well if they said it's ok, then I'd believe them
From what I could gather when I looked into it before I did it the first time, it was a "could" happen, not a "will" happen I'm sure it will be ok!!! I never bother with strand tests either! hahaha Well, have fun washing it out of your hair!!! LOL Its such an ordeal, it's like it never ends! |

meems, all my aunties henna their hair at the first sign of grey. By the light of their favorite video poker machines, instead of that kinda blue-ish sheen some asian hair gets, we bask in their nice reddish henna glow.
I think it'll look great! can't wait to see pics! |

well i don't think anything happened. gray still gray. rest of hair still looks same. could be that DH's application wasn't the bestest. I didn't feel like he was putting it on that thoroughly.
so I guess no harm done . . . it looks like it did before. really i just want to stop coloring all together to see how much gray I really have since I started going gray more than 20 years ago! DH not a fan of this idea however.

I started going gray about 15 years ago, too. I grew it out to see how much I had earlier this year, but while there was not much more, I didn't like it. So now it's back to coloring, especially now that I have to look for a job. I need to maintain that youthful illusion.
I use L'Oreal Feria when I do it at home (which I've done for the last 10 years). I would look into things before you color again - I'm not sure how henna reacts to other colorants.
