Default When it rains.....

it pours. Goes right along with another saying.... "If I didn't have any bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all."

The good news is that if that whole "bad things come in 3's" is actually true, I'm all set for awhile.

First, our oil burner cracked, and we have to replace the furnace. We're going to convert to natural gas, but in the meantime put in an electric water heater so that at least we have hot water. Thankfully my dh can do this stuff himself (for the most part) or it would cost us even more than it already is.

Second, my brother-in-law passed away last week. He was 56. The worst part is that it was really very preventable. He gave up on his health about 10 years ago, and has declined since then. Very sad, especially since he had so much to live for.... he had his first grandchild born in May, and his oldest son is due to be married in less than a month. Really sucks.

Third, Third, today, was my son AJ getting into an accident in the parking lot of a Subway where we stopped for lunch. He was backing out of our parking spot, and then another car was backing out also, and they collided. The guy was a major a-hole. He got out of he MERCEDES (oh yeah, it couldn't have been a Ford Escort or something, right?) and started yelling at AJ, telling him that he effed up his bumper. OMG... seriously?? I was pissed. I said to the guy... "Do you think he did this on PURPOSE? You need to stop swearing at him." Anyway, we parked and exchanged information. He was going on about how he didn't know how he was going to get it fixed because he keeps this car here all year (he lives in Illinois). He had what looked to me like a small dent in his bumper, and we had some damage to ours as well. Of course, in the moment I was more in shock than anything, so I didn't even have the police come. I am kicking myself in the a$$ for that now, because the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this guy was probably at least as much at fault as AJ was. They both were backing up, and I'm pretty sure that AJ was going first, and that he still had his reverse lights on when the guy starting backing up. The problem was that AJ didn't put the car into drive and thought he was going forward when in reality he went backwards. He wasn't moving very quickly though, and didn't go far at all before they collided. I am just SO PISSED at myself for not thinking clearly at the moment. The other problem is that we got rid of the collision on the van a couple of years ago because it's so damn old.
I made AJ drive home (about another 30 minutes) because I didn't want him to think that I didn't trust him. I tried really hard not to make him feel worse despite being stressed TO THE MAX.

Haven't told dh yet. Wish me luck with that one. He was still sleeping when I left to go to my part-time job this afternoon, and he was getting ready to leave for his job when I got home. I chickened out.

I don't know how we are going to pay for this..... ugh.

So sorry Lori. No fun at all! I'm really sorry about your brother-in-law. So sad.

As far as the accident goes . . . I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but at least here, it probably wouldn't make a difference for you to call the police. Since you were in a parking lot of Subway - that's private property, and they probably wouldn't do anything unless there was an injury or criminal activity. I got into a little fender bender at the Post Office last year, and I wanted to call the cops just to make sure my interests were protected. They came and just said, "Well, since you were on private property, and no one got hurt, just exchange information and deal with it between the two of you." If anything, it might have made the other guy get his temper in check, though. I was lucky that they guy who hit me was really nice about the whole thing.

Sending positive thoughts your way and hoping that you're at the end of your bad luck. HUGS!

Oh gosh, that's a WHOLE lot to deal with right now. Sorry for the loss in your family. Hope the other situations can be resolved quickly and fairly.

Sorry to hear about all of that especially the death in the family. The only thing I would suggest if you did not do so at the accident is to get your cell phone (or a camera) and take pictures of the damage on the other vehicle and on yours. It is really more important to get it of the other vehicle because he could cause more damage to increase costs. We had a girl who ran a stop sign out here where we live. I guess she got ticked off because my husband was really close to her bumper but it was because he had to slam on the brakes when she pulled out in front of us. Then she started going really slow (speed limit was 45 and she got down to like 10 mph). Well by that point with her running a stop sign and then driving like that he was kinda ticked off himself. She then just abruptly stopped. We think she pulled her emergency brake because there were no brake lights. Since we were barely moving it just cause a tiny scuff mark on both our front bumper and her bumper. She had previous damage though up above where the bumpers hit. She got out of the car and started screaming at my husband saying how could you hit me etc and oh my gosh I am pregnant I cant believe you did this. I told her had she not ran the stop sign it wouldnt have happened or if she had sped up to the speed limit it wouldnt have happened. It was clear that she tried to make my husband hit her. Well anyhow we did not take pictures and low and behold a few days later our insurance agent called and said she was claiming like 3000 dollars in damage and he needed to come out and inspect our car. He did and by that time my husband had rubbed the scuff marks off so you could not tell there was any damage at all. We do not know what she did but it sounds like she (or more likely her boyfriend) caused more damage or she backed into something...who knows. It did not match up with the measurement of our bumper or with the accident report from FHP so our insurance company told her look either drop the claim or we will turn it in as insurance fraud. So after that long explanation it is really important in any accident even a little one to take pictures to protect yourselves against someone trying to make a buck off of your insurance.

HUGS!! Sorry about your loss and then having to deal with the heater and now the accident... ugh! Hopefully the insurance will cover things... Like Lydia said - having the cops out might not have done much - here, the damage has to be like $5000 or more to be able to call the police.

wow, sorry to hear about all of that.
Here, when 2 people back into each other in a parking lot it is automatically split 50% fault. Maybe that's the case there too...hopefully the other guy doesnt cause any extra trouble.

Thanks ladies... thankfully, my husband didn't freak out like I thought he might. I like that whole automatically 50/50 thing, Melissa... because as much as the jerk tried to blame my son, it was really his fault too.

Lori, my dear friend's husband just had this happen about two months ago - the parking lot incident. I know we are in different states, but he thought for sure he was at fault and he immediatly reported it to his insurance. A couple weeks later he got a letter stating that it was a 50/50 and therefor he wasn't responsible for the damage done to the girl's car. Maybe this will be the case for you as well.

Sorry to hear about the death in the family.

Hope things look up soon for you.
