Default I get the worst mom award this week...

Yesterday afternoon, I had our front door open to let some light into the house...we have a glass storm door behind the heavy wood door that won't lock but it shuts firmly and I knew Ella couldn't open it..anyway, Ella was standing there looking outside and Avery was in another room playing...I stepped away for a SECOND and as I was walking back in the room, Avery was at the door, had opened it and Ella took off. Before I could get to her she had literally flown off the top porch step. We have 5 steps down to the yard and they are all made of brick. No one can ever convince me our babies don't have angels standing over them b/c it could have been so much worse than it was. I didn't even really see how she fell so I wasn't sure what was hurt. She cried for a minute while my heart literally stopped beating but she was okay really quickly and just wanted to get down to go play. But she got a NASTY scraped down the side of her right eye/cheek and her little eyebrow was a little puffy. I freaked...called Brian who got home from a 15 min drive in about 5 lol. But after my adrenaline stopped working overtime, it was apparent that she was okay. I couldn't stop picturing that fall all night though and probably got up 10 times to check on her. It looks awful this morning and she's going to have a shiner for a few days. I know stuff happens...but oh my gosh the guilt kills

I'm so glad she's ok! Seriously, that is in no way your fault. You should get the best mum award for being so upset about it still. Stop thinking what could have been, because it didn't turn out that way. Your babies have angels watching over them and everything turned out okay Now you've learned for next time!

oh nikki. it's not your fault. i am glad she is okay.
i've done my share of bonehead moves - one involved not seeing jillian at the back door & i basically shut the door on her, forcing her to fall and scrape her face on the back porch. she had scrapes like ella's - but i caused them.

I'm so glad she's ok Nikki!

my worst mom moment...ugh...

It SEEMED like a good idea at the time to run water from the hose down the slide in the backyard. But once my daughter launched a good 18 inches in the air half way down the slide, I knew in that one split second I'd be that IDIOT mom who had to explain to the ER team the stupid thing I'd done that hurt my child.

Luckily she landed in the grass (which was long and fluffy) and shook it right off. But still, what was I thinking??

We laugh about that now...every dumb thing we do is compared to the "water slide event"...

totally not your fault Nikki!! My daughter had a similar injury when she was about 2 and 1/2-3 years old. She was in the bathtub and we kept shampoo and in the cabinet. I turned around for one second to get the shampoo and she stood up and slipped and fell. She had a huge bump and a bruise but she was ok. I learned to get everything ready before putting her in the bath but Im sure in the 15 or so years since that incident Ive had a million more mistakes that I should have known better about.

Thx everyone...I've done worse too actually... when DS was 18 mos he climbed out of his crib for the first time..I went in, put him back and before I even got out the door I heard a thump and horrible scream...yep..he broke his arm. That was worse than this..that involved a trip to the ER and his little arm in a cast for 4 weeks

At least she was okay..no lasting injuries

Oh HUGS Nikki! That is so scary - and I know the Mommy Guilt is the WORST.

I have 2 bad Mommy Awards hanging on my heart:
1) Ava was born in the winter and we had one of those cozy car seat covers in her seat to keep her warm. We were grocery shopping, and she fell asleep while we were holding her, so we laid her in her seat and covered her with the seat cover. Then we checked out, took her out to the car and drove to our next stop (a couple blocks away & across a very busy highway). When we went to take her out of the seat in the restaurant we realized we'd never strapped her in!! I started bawling - I was so freaked out and upset!

2) The time DH and I were washing dishes and sat her on the counter between us. Can you see where this is going? DH had his back turned and I bent down to put something in a cupboard and she lunged. She landed on the floor on her back in front of me, screaming and screaming, and I was bawling and it was soooo scary. Thankfully, she was okay, but I kept thinking "What if she hadn't flipped in mid-air (which she did so she landed on her back), and landed face first or top of her head?". I've NEVER sat her on the cupboard, the table, or anything higher than a chair since. Lesson learned. Guilt is STILL hanging with me, even well over a year later.

That Mommy guilt is BAD, but this wasn't your fault. It's impossible to predict everything that could happen, and it gets 10x harder when you add in the things that older siblings can accidentally do to the little ones. We had the exact same thing happen (right down to the 3 year old opening the door), but luckily there was someone on the other side who caught Lauren when she fell.

I too can relate to the 3 yr old opening the door for the 18 month old(in my case). She hit the edge of the cement step right across the top of her nose. Splitting it open. She still has a scar 18 months later that haunts me. We are human, we make mistakes. Your not a bad mom! And I'm glad it was not worse for her.

Poor little thing! I'm glad she's okay (they're so much more resilient than you think, huh?). And don't beat yourself up about it... I think all of us have looked away for a second and something has happened to our little ones. I personally think they have eyes in the back of their heads so they can TELL when you're not looking to go do something naughty - LOL!
