Pokemon Card Game
My son was watching two of the older kids playing pokemon after school today at the park and was talking about getting a 'deck'. The kids tried to explain it to me...but it sounds like you buy some cards and sometimes have the right cards??? And you need these power ups???
 Anyway...can someone enlighten me? If I were to buy my son a 'deck' for Christmas so he could play with his pals, what would I really want to get?

Hey Kristi,
You can get what are called theme decks at Target (they're in an aisle at the front of the store by the cash registers usually with other trading card games). These "decks" will usually have a couple of rarer cards and a bunch of common cards, but ultimately, they should include a good set of cards that are built to work well together and will allow your son to dive in and play a game with his friends. That said, if your son ends up loving it and getting into it, he'll probably want you to buy something called booster packs. These are small, addictive packs of cards which include 15 cards that normally will include one rare card, a couple of uncommon cards and a bunch of common cards. They are NOT built to work together, but rather to boost the collectable nature of the game as you open packs to try to collect the cards you need to make your "deck" better. It's a slippery slope of fun that can get expensive fast, but if it were me, I'd probably buy a theme deck or two and 4-5 booster packs so he can have the pokemon experience for Christmas. He may love it, he may get bored, but you should be able to get all of that for <$50. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try to help! Robin

OH my gosh, I played this game soooo much as a kid and my boys are into it now too.
The problem with the booster packs is that they very very rarely come with energy cards and you can't use a pokemon without the right energy, so I would buy him two starter packs and make sure to look at the back and get ones with different kinds of energy cards so he can play a wider arrange of pokemon.

That's a good point Adi! You may want to consider looking for an Elite Trainer Box because that comes with a pack of "energy" AND some booster packs and it's a great place to store cards too.
 And here are the theme decks too...

I bought a bunch of energy cards recently from here:

You definitely want more than just one of each. 5-10 is a good number for each. when I purchased the 75, I got 10-15 of each because I was building up the deck of both my boys and myself (yes I totally play with them, bahhahaha).

I played so much when I was younger! Now I no longer keep track of them and am kinda sad to see that I don't know the two pokemons on the boxes shown here!
 It's so addicting. I remember using my lunch money to buy cards.

yep, if you want to play too, you'll need a deck. It's fun though! It gets my boys adding and subtracting (the damage on each pokemon) and reading the cards.Also, it's a good way to keep them from watching so much tv! It's worth the money!

Pokemon cards are the reason my son came home crying for 45 minutes this past week from school :/

the school my boys are zoned for (if we did public school) has a strict policy about not bringing anything to school and their little neighbor friend got his cards taken away when he brought them. His mom had to go and get them because they wouldn't give them back to him!

my 8 year old just starting talking about these "cards" last week and I had no idea what they were. I'm thrilled that Kristi started this thread and greatly appreciate everyone's input. now that I know what I'm looking for, I'll def be grabbing a few decks [& extra energy cards!] for my older [8 & 5] boys for Christmas!

I went to Target today and stood there and looked at all the cards. I did see the theme decks which had characters with different types of powers. Those looked pretty cool.
I'm wondering if I purchased one of the 'theme decks' (They are in the picture that Robin posted on the bottom) and then ordered some single cards (like adi mentioned) for 'energy' would I get an interesting enough deck to play with? Maybe if I understood the game it might be easier to buy!
