Birthday cakes

It's Harry's Birthday in November and I've always bought cakes from the shop for him but this year I'm thinking about making a cake myself for him. I want something quite simple as it's going to be my first ever time making a Birthday cake from scratch, I've made plenty sponge cakes in the past but I've never iced them so I don't want something that will be hard for me.

Does anyone have anything nice and easy pinned or any blogs with pretty but simple cakes?

I love the look of this one but I'd probably leave a few coloured layers off as it's far too big for what I need -

I've pinned that rainbow cake too, but don't think I'll ever actually make it myself. I like this one:

As kids we used to LOVE Baked Alaska for our birthday cakes. It's basically icecream on a sponge base, with meringue on top. Soooooo yummy.

Oh I love this one as well, I did look at it on pinterest but forgot to pin it. I think I might keep this one for Jack's Birthday in December.
