Hang in there!! I have been thinking of you. And if it is any consolation the trach is not as scary as it sounds. I know it is a lot different with a baby and a grown up but my husband had to have a trach after his accident for the same reason as your son. He was not breathing and got pnuemonia. With the trach they can suck out the secretions very easily. My husband was still able to eat with the trach in if I remember correctly they just had to do a swallow study on him. He had his in for nearly a month and now it is just a teeny little line on his neck where it indents. It healed up fine. It did make all the difference for my husband as well so Im praying for your little guy if he needs one it will help him too

Thanks for the update Kara. I've been thinking of your little guy. Like Jessica says, the trach is not too bad or scary. My brother had one from infancy until the age of nine due to reoccurring throat polyps that choked off his airway. It took 21 surgeries for him to finally be well and able to let the trach close. He does have a scar and a very deep voice from the surgeries, but otherwise he did well. My father had a trach at the end of his life due to MD. I helped take care of him and while suctioning was not my favorite thing, it was not overly difficult. Bless you all.

I'm so sorry Timothy is having such a tough start to life, poor little guy. And it sure sounds like both you + Timothy have more than your share of challenges. I hope you have some family around to help with the other kids, and don't be afraid to take a day (or half day) off once in a while, you need to also make sure you stay rested and healthy so that you can continue to be Timothy's advocate at the hospital. (Although it was for different reasons, my youngest was born at 28 weeks and had a 73 day stay in NICU, so I know some of what you are going through...hugs to you, you are doing amazing!)
