Its been so crazy the last 24 hours. We can only go in for a little while at a time with him and we both have huge families (many nieces, nephews, cousins and siblings....we both have four brothers and sisters and then of course their spouses). So even though I do not want to leave him I feel like there are so many people who want and need to be with him and since they allow only 2 people at a time (although they broke the rules and let us have three) I will leave and let others visit with him. Then they tell us to leave for a little while so he can rest.

So anyhow with how he is doing...he has multiple rib fractures. There is fluid on his liver. They think it might be blood. It has not gotten worse and all his blood tests are normal. His vital signs are all perfect as well and they said his abdomen is still feeling ok. They did more xays today and some blood work and they put some tubes in which are delivering lidocaine directly to the site of the pain on the ribs.

He is on a constant drip of pain meds so they have to keep him intubated to keep him breathing deeply. Trying to remember how they explained it...because my husband has a tolerance to pain medicines at this point after being on them in order to relieve the pain they have to give him a higher dose then most people would get and in order to give him the higher dose he has to stay on the respirator. They said the medications cause your respiration to decrease and obviously thats not good.

There is bruising on the lungs and there is still blood being drained...from between the lungs and the lining? They told me the bruising/swelling will be the worst at 72 hours and we are just passing 25 hours now. So we have a little while to wait until we know exactly how bad it could be.

He is trying to breathe on his own though and the nurse seems to think that is a good sign. When he does come out of sedation and is somewhat alert he is responding to requests like wiggling his toes and that is also supposed to be a good sign.

Basically what we have been told at this point is he will likely be here for a few weeks possibly more it just depends on how fast he is able to get better and how long it takes to start weaning him off the drip, get him off the respirator and to get him doing all the things necasary to recover completely.

just another small update while I wait for my ride to the hospital today. We are at the halfway point right now for how bad things could get with swelling and bruising and he is still stable with vital signs being totally normal. I talked to the nurse already this morning and she said managing his pain and making sure he is not getting agitated is the thing they are trying to do right now. They have introduced feeding through a feeding tube and he has tolerated that really well so that is always good. Its just going to be a long road for recovery and Im not sure how he is going to take the news about the accident and us losing our son. It could go either way. What I am really scared of is he could revert once he does find out or get very very angry as alot of family right now is just so angry. I realize it is unfair and it sucks so much and I feel the anger too which I guess is normal but have been praying really hard to just focus right now on Matthew and just holding onto the love I have for him and his memory. Eighteen years was not even close to long enough for what I wanted for him but it is what I got and Im trying to come to terms with that as well. It is very hard.

I just really right now do not even have the energy to be angry because praying for my husband, doing what I have to do with all the other stuff going on and just trying to love my son is taking everything I have. Anyhow all the prayers/positive thoughts are so appreciated. You guys have no idea. I am so lucky to have this community to turn to in this time of my life. Between you guys and my family and friends I am just really feeling alot of love and caring.
