Default Do you decorate for each season?

I love to change out my home decor for the seasons. However, these days, I've narrowed down the seasons to just a few. In my newly married days, and when my children were younger, I always had out decorations for each little holiday that came along. I wish I had that motivation and energy now!

I focus on these seasons:

Jan-Mar WINTER
Apr-May SPRING
June-Aug SUMMER
SEPT-Nov FALL
Nov-Dec CHRISTMAS

If you decorate, would you share some of your photos, even if it's for another season? I love to get new ideas, and since I'm surrounded by all you talented women, I thought I'd ask!

Here are some of my inside decorations for fall. I need to take outside photos. I tend to scatter bits here and there around the house, with the biggest decor on my dining table. I noticed when sharing my photos, that I've added some things since I went shopping with my aunt, so I need to take more photos.

On top of my curio with all my vintage cameras:

An antique embroidered bell pull by the curio:

A little pumpkin as part of my Gone With The Wind Shrine :

In my living room as you come in the front door. My Mama painted the cotton boll picture:

On top of our TV stand, some vintage bottles and a bird in a cloche:

On a sewing box that was my Grandma's, I put a vintage nut bowl that belonged to my Big Daddy and Granny, and the tools were from my Mama:

A pumpkin jar for sweets with a brass quail on top of my phonograph:

My prize possession is this mushroom Olivia's girlfriend made for my birthday. It sits on the gas heater by the front door:

One single glass pumpkin on our bathroom counter:

The dining room table:

Top of the china cabinet in the dining room:

Our coffee bar in the dining room:

Our dresser in our bedroom with a few Dollar Tree pumpkins in a vintage Hull piece:

Our kitchen decorations:

a) Can I see more of your vintage cameras? I love them so much (although I don't have many of my own these days)

b) Our house is small and has very little storage so we barely decorate for year-round but I try to do a little for Halloween and Hanukkah/Christmas.

We currently have 2 balloon garlands, one in our bedroom and one in the living room

Last year was our first year with a tree since we bought the house and possibly even before that. We also strung up tinsel and I had a "Happy Hanukkah" banner just to the left of the tree

We light a few menorahs every year. Sadly, my custom hedgehog one my mom bought me broke but there are photos somewhere of my hedgehogs lighting it with me. I have a thumbprint sea turtle one that we made for Rowan's first Hanukkah and I won Doug a really pretty multi-color one with "The Hollingsworths" engraved in it. Those all kind of live on top of the stove during Hanukkah (so we can safely leave them burning while wandering all of 10 ft away into our room)

I love those balloon banners, and I love the tree that switches between white and multicolored lights. I always loved your hedgehogs, and would love to see a pic of them helping you light the menorah.

How big is your house? We're in 1600 square feet, so it's about 100 square feet bigger than the house we lived in for almost 30 years. This is my Grandma's cottage and was built in 1940. An addition was added onto the back, which is now our laundry/utility room, our master bedroom and master bathroom. I have a lot of things that I've collected over the years. Jay always jokes that he needs make me more walls so I can hang more stuff. LOL

Give me a minute to take pics of the cameras . . .

Your house is lovely and so warm.
I do. In my previous house which was huge and I lived there for 25 years, my entrance was stuck for many years with Autumn decorations all year long. I started seeing holiday coffee bars on pinterest. I had many decorations for all seasons and I wasn't enjoying them. So I decided to use that corner as my Holiday Corner and to be able to enjoy my decorations, than have them in a box in my storage room. I would decorate for Winter, Valentine's Day, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Halloween, Christmas. Now unfortunately I don't have the same space. I just decorate a table I don't use, with tiered trays using decorations depending on the season. It still is better than nothing.

I also have a big problem not being able to find decorations I want in Greece. Half my items are from the Us.

I love all your cameras. I don't think we have any of the same ones but I have a lot of close cousins.

Our house is 1,175 sq ft according to RedFin (I had to Google it) and the layout is interesting. Our master bedroom is HUGE so it's divided into sleeping space and working space (2 desks and a storage cube thing full of my cameras that fell off the wall), but our living room/dining room/kitchen isn't much bigger than our bedroom and the other bedroom is the size of a shoebox. My family gave me such an earful when I got rid of the couch and the kitchen table soon after we moved in but there just wasn't space for them; I can only cringe at the thought of all that furniture in light of all the stuff we bought to make a homeschool nook.

I found a photo of Delirium helping to light the menorah. Her brothers moved too much to get a good photo in low light

I used to decorate a lot more when the kids were little. Now I pretty much do Fall/Halloween and Christmas which then trickles to Winter (I have a lot of snowflake themed decorations that I'll leave up until Spring.) I do have a few Spring/Easter things I will pull out- I frame all the kids' easter bunny pics & put all of them out on the mantle & tables. So fun to look back on.

I did find some layouts of my Fall decor:

Our house outside last christmas:

older outside pic- but I still put out most of that stuff- plus I love the bulldog pillow

I do something similar to you...Winter themed/Spring/Fall/Christmas.
I tend to go over the top with Christmas. We bought a second tree last year on clearance to go in my office/library. I have a tiered tray I put stuff on...Valentines or Fourth of July but the rest is pretty generic. I do have a flag outside and mat that I change out with seasons too. Oh and a wreath. Fall one, Christmas, Yellow flowers for spring, flag one for 4th of july. I need to take more photos...
I have a slight gnome obsession...this one was from a while ago...they have increased in number.

Oh, I love all your decorations! They are so happy! I always want to pick out that style, but then I bring it home and it looks silly with my vintage style. With your furniture, it looks amazing!

Awww, little bitty cutie! I had to look up our square feet, and I'm like, NOW I know why everything doesn't fit right. LOL We only have 1332, which is about 200 sq ft smaller than our other house.

I use a photo from summer in my summertime decorations. I agree with you that it's fun to do that. I need to print out more.

I love all your interior and exterior decorations. Your home is so lovely and I love your style!

I'll tell you that decorating is a big deal these days. My chronic back pain really puts a hamper on the things I want to do. It took ten days to get these fall decorations out. I've just had to learn to take my time, but boy, I still get frustrated because I just want to get it DONE. So I get the bandwidth. If I wasn't so determined in my head about it, it would very likely stop happening.

As far as decorations, I buy clearance items or from thrift stores or estate sales. Sometimes I hav pretties that were gifted to me. I don't have the budget to buy new decorations every year. I like to have a little bit here and there. This year, Dollar Tree had some cute pumpkins that I had to pick up, so I really didn't spend any money.

Nope. I'm the worst.
I didn't even put decorations on my tree last year. Just plopped it in the living room. Fluffed a bit. Turned it on at night. :shrugs:
Seriously. I'm the worst.

I didn't decorate at all last Christmas at my house. I did decorate at my Mama's for her, and since I was there all the time, those were my decorations, too.

The year before that, we chose not to put up a tree anymore. It was such a relief. I'm OK just having touches of Christmas around the house.

I love decorating for holidays. I usually do Fall, Halloween, a little for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, and then beach-themed for the Summer. I have quite a few things of my late grandmother's that I like to put out for the holidays. Some things from Goodwill like the ceramic Christmas tree I found about 12 years ago for $5 before they became popular again.

I was trying to find some LOs with my decorations, but only found two so far of my tiered tray that I decorate:

I don't know if a balloon garland would work for your life but they don't take long to assemble and hang, have a big visual impact, and the bat one I shared above was $3 at Target! (I did buy an electric balloon pump a few years back to inflate them because my arms wanted to fall off using my Dollar Tree manual pump.)

Just Halloween and Christmas here.

Usually after the first day of Fall I'll put Halloween stuff out through the first weekend of November, and then Christmas goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving. Outside Christmas will go up a week or two before Thanksgiving just to have nicer weather, but I wait to turn everything on.

Aww, thank you!

I just finished the Halloween ones today. It had been awhile since I’d scrapped the inside decor. I do it so I can remember where everything goes each year. 😂

Honestly, I would be more than happy to not put up the tree again. The kids don't really care anymore. Matt doesn't help with anything. So, yeah. Just don't wanna. Also, I hate fluffing that gosh dang tree.

You’re so sweet!

The outside looks so much better than the inside, 😂 Redoing thr siding and adding thr porch in 2021 made a major difference!

Seriously, we need to redo the kitchen (things are literally falling apart) and our bathrooms need to be updated too. We just got ride of the blue toilet in our bathroom, but still have a blue shower.

Okay, so I am so sick of putting up a Christmas tree. Daughter has moved out and truly husband doesn't seem to care accept for the idea of laughing at his Martha Stewart. BUT, I have so many ornaments that I love so then what do I do with them? Every other surface already gets covered in holiday decor that is part of our Christmas collections.

Hedgehog, actually. And she had a friend whose human was a rabbi so *he* got to play dreidel for treats. (She also had 2 brothers who were not as well-behaved but were allowed to pose in front of the menorah too.)

I am team garland. I do a lot of balloon garlands but maybe you could make a tinsel 'tree' on the wall and hang your ornaments that way? (A quick Google search brought up this collection of examples: https://www.hikendip.com/diy-wall-christmas-tree-ideas/)

I can barely be bothered to put up a Christmas tree let alone seasonally decorate. I love, love, love seeing other people do it but it's so not in my wheelhouse to do.

Many years ago (like 40), my mother chose to start using a smaller tree for Christmas. It was a 3 foot tree and it sat on a table we had in the living room. The table itself was actually a piece of marble on an old treadle sewing machine base. The few presents we had were placed around the tree and larger ones around the treadle. At the same time I had a 2 foot tree in my old bedroom that had turned into a sitting room for me (with the computer and desk).

Fast forward to the present. I still use 2 foot trees. I have one in the above mentioned sitting room now office year round. I have another 2 that I rotate putting out on a cart in the dining room (these 2 have no electric lights). 2 years ago I bought a 3 foot tree that I put on the marble table loaded with sand dollar ornaments that my Dad made from sand dollars that he found on the beach at Hilton Head in 1980 and 1982. He bleached them then painted them white. The art teacher painted little pics on them with the year on the back.

I no longer have any presents to buy so really don't need a tree for that purpose.

As for those ornaments... I have several small ornament trees in my living room with ornaments on them all year long. Some are for a small number of my Precious Moments ornaments (the rest are on a shelving unit in my office). The other one has some of the Longaberger pewter ornaments I got in the early 2000's. I just added the Longaberger one 2 years ago, same time as the sand dollar tree after finding them in storage!

As for Cheryl's original question, I don't decorate for the various seasons or holidays. Used to many years ago, using items I had made. I was big into plastic canvas/yarn crafts in the 80's and had quite a few holiday themed items I made that I hung on the walls. Those are long gone though. I donated many of them when I cleaned out the basement 6 years ago.

I have a few things I put out at Christmas (including one of those ceramic trees... that I found we had as far back as 1983. Last year was minimal since I was so sick, but hopefully I can put out more this year.

I'm honestly the worst at decorating!! I always pin things on pinterest and love things other people do, but I have never been able to pull it off. I think part of it is that our house is VERY small for a family of 7, and there is clutter everywhere because we just don't have the closet space. I am also one who fights to keep things even remotely clean. I didn't grow up learning how to clean (lived in a pigsty basically), and have had to struggle at it my entire adult life.

One of my dreams when we are ever able to move to a larger home is to hire a designer to come help me create some semblance of decor and order!

(Cheryl, I LOVE your collections / decor!!)

I do decorate for each season (and often times, in between).

We have a smaller home, so I go with the less is more approach.

A couple times a month I work at an upscale home decor consignment shop - so I am constantly bringing stuff home so I can re-decorate or to add to my collections.

For those of you who don't decorate . . . that's totally cool. I struggle to continue to do it because of my chronic back pain. My brain and heart WANTS to do it, but my body REVOLTS. I know there will be a time I won't do much of any decorating anymore, but until that day, I will continue doing the thing that makes me happy.

Jill, I love your decor. And what a blessing to find upscale decorations at your fingertips while you're working a couple of times a month! I would never make any money. LOL
