I'm conflicted about it! I can get sucked in, I can get caught up in missing persons cases... but I also have a hard time with people profiting off of tragedies like this as it feels sort of like i shouldn't watch especially ones where they didn't get the permission from those that are directly involved, but I also hate the stigma that true crime lovers have as well. (this is not a judgement to those who watch so please don't take it that way)

Pod casts? Too many but my all time favorite is Root of Evil: The True Story of the Hodel Family and the Black Dahlia. It's an amazing podcast. Well written and produced and is told my actual family members. Really good!

I'm not at all!! I almost didn't comment because I didn't want people to think that! I think I just wish more care was given to those who have their stories being told.

When I was a kid I had a VCR recording of "i know my first name is steven" and I was OBSESSED with it and watched it over and over again.. so I definitely have a place in my heart for true crime!

Literally snorted.

Love all the true crime TV, movies, documentaries, etc. I don't watch anything on You Tube regularly and Pod casts of any type put me to sleep. So, now I'm off to check out Carrie's lists of You Tubers...

I tend to like the forensics side more. When I was in high school, there was a show where they used to pose questions before the break on what you'd do and I was very competitive with my father to solve the case.

Very young Brenda wanted to be a forensic photographer and, to this day, my friends still joke about the "CSI filter" on my camera. I photographed a stain to determine whether it was blood. (It was! It also was not the first time I had done that little trick)

Yes and Yes! I listen to podcasts when driving sometimes.
Crime Junkies
The Deck
Park Predators
Going West
Dark Downeast

I have watched a few things on TV...but tend to watch Criminal Minds on repeat. I am not a big you tuber so haven't watched any of those.

I'm a true crime junkie. I don't really listen to podcasts anymore, but I watch A LOT of YouTube that is the podcast version, you're just seeing who is talking.

Carrie, I find that your love for Darrell Brooks AND the Black Dahlia/Hodel Family podcast makes us true BFFs. We need to have a virtual watch party. LOL!

I should be home. We do get kiddos at the door so I'd have to answer that occasionally but sounds fun!

I do like to watch True Crime stories. I've never really listened to a podcast, though.

I watched Lost Girls & Unbelievable this summer. Both were true stories & they were very good movies.

I know I have seen more, but I can't seem to think of any off the top of my head.

Oh yes. I mostly listen to podcasts, but I’ve been on a book binge this year. I watch a lot of 20/20 and Netflix documentaries too. I also listen to an obscene amount of psychological and cozy murder novels.

I blame my mother for reading me It as a bedtime story.

I also struggle like Kristin with people doing true crime “right” There have been too many situations where the killers are immortalized and the victims are forgotten, and so may cases that don’t get the energy and focus they deserve because the victim is part of a marginalized community. I try to choose my sources as wisely as possible and have no trouble abandoning a book or podcast when it starts to give me that icky feeling that everything isn’t on the up and up.

What I don't like about the true crime shows is how they take an hour to tell a 5-minute story. So they are not my norm for watching. However, the mini-series that Netflix has done, first Dahmer, and now on the Menendez Brothers were both so well done - and creepy and disturbing. They leave you thinking about those crimes longer than you wanted to. I believe Netflix plans to keep doing true crime mini's like this according to what I have read.

You said it in a much better way than what was swimming around in my head!! thank you for that!!

right now the menendez brothers netflix show is getting a lot of talk/controversy about how the boys were portrayed.. I actually don't know a whole lot about the case itself but it apparently paints them in a much different light than the reality of the situation.

I don't know that it paints them in a different light as much as it paints the parents in a much different light. I think back at the time of the trial they were looked at as two boys who unalived their parents. Now, after so many others have come out and told their stories of abuse, they are now being believed about theirs.

That is good to know! I read the brothers were really upset by it but this sounds like maybe that shouldn't be the case? Maybe i'll have to watch it!

I think there were some scenes that were innacurate (according to the brothers). Even the wife of one of them has posted on social media about the innacuracies.

Right? Couldn't be me.

I follow someone on Tiktok that is local to me that married her husband while he was incarcerated. He was just released a couple of months ago and he is doing so good. They just bought their first home together, too. I'm happy for them. Just couldn't be me.

I just finished the Menendez Bros doc. I really hadn't followed them at all previously. I thought it was a great series!

I am a true crime addict. I watch a lot of true crime on Investigation Discovery. My favorite program there is Evil Lives Here - I also watch whatever I can find in true crime on Netflix and Hulu.
I listen to Dateline - 20/20 and 48 Hours at night on podcast when I can't sleep (...and many many nights I doze off while listening and when I wake up 45 minutes or an hour later, I have to go back and listen to get the whole story ... I don't get a lot of sleep those nights - lol).
Once I find something that interests me, I scour You Tube for more info - like Ted Bundy - Chris Watts - Damian Echols and so forth.
I do find it sort of humorous that I watch true crime while scrapping ... seems sort of like an oxymoron!! Ha ha.

Yep, another true crime addict here.

I tend to like the forensic and investigation side of the stories. Quite often I will have Investigation Discovery on the tv as background noise. Oxygen and OWN also have lots of documentaries about true crime. My cable lineup was changed in the spring and new channels were added. One is True Crime Network. It runs Forensic Files along with other documentary shows like Dateline.

I don't listen to many podcasts but have one I really need to start. It started out as a podcast about the Pike County Murders in Ohio back in 2016. Now that the case has concluded, they have done a few episodes about the Idaho murders. Will be interesting to see how that one plays out.

In the last year though I have gotten more into YouTube, especially court videos. There is one specific civil case that I've followed that could become a criminal case. The judge in the civil case referred the Petitioner in the case to the county attorney's office for investigation. So at this time, it is in the hands of the investigators to determine if perjury charges (and possibly other charges) will be filed. One of the YouTube bloggers that was big in getting this case the publicity it deserved has signed a contract for a documentary about it. With all the crap the petitioner has pulled over the years (at least 10) in the court system, it might just be a multi-episode documentary! Long story short... a woman has accused at least 4 different men of getting her pregnant and there is no evidence that any of them were real. The last one she accused was after a one night encounter where there was no actual intercourse... just a blow job!

Add me to the true crime addiction list. I love them and watch something everyday. But I don't do podcasts. I don't have anything against them, I just don't think about them.

I also love documentaries and anything historical. The subject doesn't matter that much, because I am interested in learning about almost anything.
