Default ipad, kindle fire, etc question

We are looking at possibly getting the older kids a "pad" of some kind for Christmas. The main purpose would be so that they'd have something to Skype on with us since they don't live with us all the time.

Does anyone know if the Kindle Fire has a camera that would make skyping possible? I know the ipad does, but are there cheaper options?

I don't think the Kindle has a camera. BUT, in a few weeks, Apple is going to announce a new smaller iPad. You might want to wait for that. I'm sure it will still be more expensive than the Fire, but it will be a much more reasonable price than the regular iPad (rumors are that it will be around $250). You can also Skype and do FaceTime with an iTouch or iPhone. I did a bunch of that with my kids when I was stuck in the hospital with Kaylin's birth.

I'm kind of wanting either a small iPad or a Fire, but I'm waiting for both Amazon and Apple to announce their new product lines before I make a decision.

The Fire, for sure, doesn't have a camera. I wish it did...

Yeah - no camera on the Fire - and if Ipad is coming out in something smaller to compete with the Tab - that'd be great -and it will have that option!

It does not, but rumor is that the fire2 may. I suggest the google nexus 7- it's moderately priced, easy to use, and has a camera for it. tons of apps are available too. it's priced right at $200 right now.

That is the absolute only feature that I don't like about my Fire - no camera.

Agreed! When the next gen Fire comes out, rumor has it that it will have a camera. At that point my kids will inherit my original Fire.
