The Tale of Two But(t)s
So, as I've mentioned before, my family plays World of Warcraft. My 8 y/o son plays with the 8 y/o grandson of a fellow player. They use Ventrilo to communicate with each other, so Michael and I hear a lot of interesting conversation.
Last night: I don't know exactly what led to the comment, but we heard my son shout to the other kid, "....and I end up having to save your butt!" We cautioned him to tone it down because it sounded a bit rude, but what we didn't hear was the other little boy telling Landon that "butt" was a bad word...which we deduced by Landon's, "Butt is NOT a bad word!" So, Michael and I then tell Landon that although it's not a bad word in our house, it might be in the home of the other little boy and that he should respect his friend and not use the word around him. Besides, if Landon were around kids who wouldn't stop using words we considered "bad," then we wouldn't let him play with them, and the other little boy's family might feel the same. So, Landon (although really frustrated with the fact that the other little boy also told him it was a LAW to not say that word, requiring quite a bit of effort to not prove him wrong) saw the reasoning and proceeded to share his decision to not use the word with the other little boy: "Nus, it's not a bad word in my house, but...Wait! I mean but like but you are so wrong and not butt like...well...the other word that you can't say." Michael and I were doing all we could to not laugh out loud. It was so funny to hear Landon trying to explain it. Or maybe you just had to be there. LOL |

Ha! Krystal, you just totally cracked me up! One of the sight words I have to teach my students each year is "but", and it's always quite the gigglefest...we have to clarify which but(t) we're talking about...
And I love your explanation for your DS! It sounds a LOT like what I tell my students, when they come to me and say "He swore"...when the other child said "dumb" or "shut up"...I always tell them to say to their friend "I really don't like that word, please don't use it around me"...anyway...you just gave me a good giggle, which I needed, so THANKS! |

To clear it up for non-WoW players, Ventrilo is using a headset to talk to the other players. ;D
Game on, Krystal. Come over to my server, I'll either save or kick your butt depending which side you're on. lol

My kids are so naive they think the "s" word is . . . . stupid. BUT, we are allowed to use "butt" in our house.

Apparently as a kid, my parents made a rule abou tthe "s" word (stupid). The Stupid Rule. We weren't allowed to call each other stupid. I pray that's what I have to worry about when I have kids! LOL!
Really funny Krystal! I love the explanation! LOL!

My DS #2 almost got another Kindergartner sent to the office for telling the teacher that he said the "s" word...and when she asked my son what that word was...my DS says "you know the "SH" word. Well, it was Shut up. And the other poor child was in tears about being told he had to go the Principals office for saying a bad 4 letter word that started with SH.
It took a while to figure it out but all was well in the end. But yeah...funny what kids think is a bad word! LOL Funny Story Krystal! |
