Default Dumb knitting ?

I posted at Ravelry too but know you crafty ladies may be able to help too.
I’m teaching myself to knit and so far I’ve got two garter stitch scarves done and just taught myself to purl BUT… I’m wanting to recreate a scarf I have that is smooth and flat with “v”s on both sides. When I knit one row and purl the next row, I made a stockinette stitch and was so proud of myself, but obviously those roll, so not good for a scarf.

So, if I purl every stitch and every row, would that recreate the “v”s on both sides? I’m using BIG needles and thick’n’quick yarn like I did for my garter stitch scarf.

I’m confused because things I see online show a “purl side” as the one with bumps and a “knit side” with v’s (or maybe that’s when you look at the back side of your needles?)

Then I tried k2, p2 but that gives me big ribs… maybe the one I’m trying to copy has only a small rib between the v’s… may upload a pic if that helps.

Sorry for a dumb newbie question- but help would be GREATLY appreciated!

if you purl every row you'll have a garter stitch, purl is basically a backwards knit.

I would love to see a pic of the one you're trying to recreate, because yes, stockinette is what you want but it curls. The only way I can think of doing totally stockinette w/o a curl would be to knit in the round and then finish the ends together to make it flat... so it would be double thick, otherwise you'd have to do a rib along the edges to keep it from curling. Which would look like.

k2, k (whatever number across), k2
p2, p (whatever number across), p2
p2, k (same number acroos), p2
k2, p (whatever number across) k2
repeat rows 3&4 for the length of the scarf
repeat rows 1&2 to finish

does that make sense?

Yeah... taking a pic of the one I want (brb to add it)...

Someone said if I k1,p2 it should create the look I want. I *think* when I tried that I did it wrong- when I ended I didnt pay attention to if I ended on knit or purl, so it ended up being more of a seed stitch.

I've made a keyhole scarf with garter, but this one my husband's grandmother gave me, and now my MIL keeps asking about it, so that's my cue to try to make her one.

That was you?? Haha - I read that thread, but didn't know the answer (I haven't attempted to learn to knit yet)! Glad you got it figured out, and I love your scarf!!

ETA: I just went back to Rav, and yeah - I totally see your username is the same... I should have recognized you, lol!

That scarf is knit, purl, knit, purl all the way across, then you would do the opposite when you flip it around (so, purl, knit, purl knit) so that the ribbing stays the same on both sides..

Ok so here's that exact pattern from what I can tell..

Cast on 19 stitches
Row 1: *knit, purl* repeat from * to * 9 times, knit 1
Row 2 *purl, knit* repeat from * to * 9 times, purl 1

Repeat rows to desired length.

The key is that if you knitted it on one row, you purl it on the next

Oh no... That's one I got from the hubby's grandma... I WISH mine looked that good. I can rock a stockinette or garter, but mine looks too chunky as I'm using thick'n'quick yarn. We'll see how it turns out. But at least now I know when to knit and when to purl by looking at the fabric so I don't have to keep track in my head.
