Help Me Choose! *poll*
Ok so I really would like a real bed for my bday in september.. i'm turning 30 and i figure its about time i had a real bed. I have never had a bed with a headboard or anything so thats what I want.. haha. We are going to do the DIY route so I need you to help me pick between these two different beds.
1) Is a fabric style tufted headboard. 2) Is a wood bed (we would have a friend help since darcy doesn't use power tools much anymore OH and the prices are about the same. The instructions for both are also pretty straight forward too. Our neighbour does woodwork and would be able to do that bed easy - here are the instructions in case anyone is curious tufted: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chic...ct-2009-076400 wood bed: http://www.knock-offwood.com/2009/10...8100_7467.html Please cast your vote! Totally the wood. I believe over the years, it would be something you'd treasure, and only ever buy/make once. I paid big money for my oversized cherry sleigh bed and I am SO glad I did. I love it and will have it forever.
The other is nice too, but seems to me that it might get boring, or I'd grow tired of it over time. Maybe not you, but thats just my thoughts. Have fun!!! Kristen |

Kristin -
To me, the maintenance on the first one makes it something I wouldn't want. Getting dirty from our body oils and dust over time, etc. And if you suffer from allergies, that's just another area for them to collect and haunt you. I just prefer the wood for those reasons and more. |

I like the softness of the fabric headboard. Plus it seems like it would be easier to make, but perhaps I am delusional. ;-)

I'm also with Darcy... and wood is always timeless, the tufted to me seems a bit trendy and I would think you'd probably change your mind after a few years

I voted for the first one... but didn't read Darcy's post. Makes sense. And I was super tempted to vote for you sleeping on the floor. Like a sleepover every single night. Woot. lol

Well I really like the first option I agree with every word Darcy said so that would keep me from getting it!!! Also the fact that within moments of putting it up one of my 5 children would have gotten something from their sticky fingers on it!!! So I voted #2!!!!

Definitely the wood one! And I love the knock-off wood site- my hubby is planning on making the boys bunk beds one of these days if he can ever get the garage clean!

the bed I've got my eye on doesn't have fabric on the headboard but is leather instead. Good point on the fabric though

Wood... I definately LOVE my log bed. I do like the look of the fabric too though, except for the cleaning factor.

Seeing as you really want a bed I decided to not go with the 3rd option.
I'm with Darcy, all else being equal, go with the easier to maintain

The wooden one is lovely. We've been married almost 25 years and never got around to having a headboard!

Hehe, I was going to click the 3rd option, but decided not to!
I <3 the 2nd bed, that's the sort of bed I want when I get around to re doing my bedroom!

I voted for the wood one...but a word to the wise...
when building stuff off of her site (which we have and LOVE) make sure you spend a little more $ for more straight/better wood. Not super great wood that is going to break the bank, but the straighter, less knotty wood it is the easier it is to get a clean line/straight finish. Oh and it does take more time than you estimate...always! But the results are fabulous. Another scrapper (Heather Ann Designs) built a bed for her little boy and it turned out so cute...you may want to read her blog posts to see what she learned too before you start on your new adventure: Wood Working Good luck and post pics when you finish!

I say wood also. I agree that the fabric one would just be to hard to keep clean with dust and body oils and such and I think even though it is kinda "in" right now it would be dated in a few years whereas a wood bed is pretty much timeless especially the one you have pictures. I love that style!! Its just so pretty

I'm also looking at the wooden ikea beds as an option too.. the only thing. Can you use regular mattresses with them? or do they have to be the thin might as well be sleeping on the floor ones that they sell?

I *think* you need to use their mattresses but I could be wrong!

you can use your own, BUT, I had to ditch the box spring and had to purchase the rails from IKEA so that the mattress didn't come up over the headboard, lol

see.. i'm gonna see if the hardware people (thanks laura!) can cut the wood to size. even though we are going to get our neighbour to do it the thought of him using a table saw (for those that don't know dh really badly injured his hand with a table saw and we are both pretty fearful of them now) makes me cringe.. gah. I'm hoping maybe the hardware people can just do that part and we can do the sanding/buiding the bed without the use of sharp things :O |

Hmm, well I voted for the tufted headboard since it's the one I would choose. But I think it also depends on the overall style you're looking for in the room. To me the tufted headboard has a more of a modern/trendy feel where as the wood bed is defintely more traditional. So I guess I'd think about which bed fits the overall look you want as well since it'll be such a focal point in the room.
We actually have an upholstered headboard in our room and even though I have really sensitive dust allergies, I don't have any issues with it. I don't really think it's any worse than an upholstered couch or chair. I just vacuum it down with the hose attachment to keep it dust free. |

I haven't had a chance to use it yet... it's still in the box waiting for cooler weather so I can paint it (it's yellow)... I know a lot of people who have IKEA beds and really like them... my word of advice is to get one that's solid wood and not made with particle board if you plan on buying from IKEA... the particle board is pretty flimsy and doesn't seem like it'll last very long, but the solid wood is pretty solid IMO

I voted for the tufted headboard, just because I loooove the look of those, but truthfully, the wood would be easier to maintain and I didn't even think about Darcy's point of the allergies. I guess if I had to re-vote, I'd vote for the wood. But, I'm sure whatever you decide will be beautiful!

I love them both, but I think the wood is trendy, but timeless; you might be happier with the wood long term.

Yeah, what Darcy said! I was thinking the same thing.
A handmade wood headboard is something you pass down - the other one will be out of fashion in a few years.

I think the wood bed would look great in your house!!!
and if you really want to sleep on the floor, set up a tent in the kids playroom by the back sliding door and have a "camping" night inside. lmao I am sure Lily & Lucas would love that!!!
