Default Keeping "Older" Kits, etc

Do you keep your older kits forever?

I spent hours purging my "stash" last evening. My EHD was nearly full and there were SO many kits, templates, brushes, etc that I haven't looked at in years - so I deleted them! I had goodies dating back from 2009!!

I'm another one that is NOT afraid to delete older kits.

I am a purge-r by nature anyway. Reasons I will delete old products:
**no longer fits my scrapping style
**designer retired for good & I haven't touched their products in 1yr or longer
**I've scrapped with the product at least once & haven't touched it in 1y or longer
**old mini freebies where I didn't purchase the full size (if there was a full size)
**products from designers that moved or at stores I do not shop at (which means I got the kit from Scrapaneers or maybe some type of freebie at one point)
**because I see no need for the product any longer
**I have access to new goodies every week, and designers skills, styles, ideas, grow & change every year
**designer has retired their product & I haven't used it in over 1 yr or longer

I purge everything in all parts of my life. LOL I have found having less stuff means less stress. I don't like things messy, so clutter is not for me. I see clutter on my computer in much the same way.

There are so many kits in the shoppe that I would love to have, but since I don't have much time to scrap, I don't get them. There is no point grabbing them and letting them sit "collecting dust" for now. But when I retire and have more time, look out. LOL

I have gotten rid of the early digital stuff I had acquired but only if it was a freebie. If I paid for it, I kept it even if I haven't used it.

I have made it a goal to use everything I have ever bought no matter when. Granted some of the elements in older kits may seem outdated but if paired with older photos, it fits right in. Or just use the papers from the kit and put elements from newer kits with it.

I also found that it was nice to have those old kits. I was on a CT in 2011 or 2012 and had done a page with just 1 photo from an event. Fast forward 8 or 9 years when I was scrapping the rest of the photos from that event. I was able to pull out that kit (luckily I have tracked what kits are used on a layout from the beginning) and now all 4 layouts of photos look like they were scrapped at the same time.

I am of the opinion that storage is cheap.

I am a hoarder of all things and too many things. I have purged some of my scrapbook kits...even pulling just a wordart or alpha or frame out and putting in a misc folder. I have close to 1400 kits and can't part with them. Some of them I will say are my own from my designing days (100 or so) but the rest are from teams or purchases. I did get rid of a lot from my CT days that I know I won't use at all or didn't like the style anymore.

I purge, what I started doing was creating yearly folders within my Designer folders, that really helps me to know how outdated something is. So anything I get this year will go in a 2023 folder, super easy to keep track that way. 5 years is about my rule of thumb with the exception of maybe Disney or holiday themed kits.

I keep everything except those freebies when I went on my first scrapbook freebie frenzy when I first started digital scrapping. For some of those freebies, I don't know what I was thinking, LOL!

I have kept everything so far but plan to purge one day I guess.... it's harder than it should be to get rid of things I don't plan on ever using.

I had a computer crash AND an EHD crash both in 2020. So I did lose a lot of my older (and some newer) items. That was basically a mandatory purge (even if it was unwanted!)

As far as older kits, if it is a generic theme or one that designers usually do every year (holidays, BTS etc) those usually get purged pretty often. Disney, travel or other theme park kits stay around mostly forever (Since I am way behind on my Disney and travel albums).

I do have some older kits that were saved or redownloaded, and are being kept mostly for their theme (anything unique sticks around longer than usual).

Every couple of years I'll go through my scrap files and delete products that no longer fit my style or I just haven't touched in a while. I should do it more often but I'm a great procrastinator

Most of my stash has been purged prior to 2019. I have a lot of kits (not my fault, it's the designers, for creating kits I must have, over and over LOL). It's not easy to purge IMO b/c even the old stuff is awesome but...it saves on the hard drive. I probably won't purge again for another 2-3 years, or maybe not even then b/c these days, hard drives are getting bigger and bigger.

This! This is 100% me as well! I have all of my scrapping files organized nice and neat ... and most everything else in our home is that way too! Clutter = anxiety for me!

does this mean you've kept every piece of artwork that your kid has brought home too?? lol

(this is just me thinking back to 2007 and thinking it's really ok if you don't keep all of it although there ARE some things that have stood the test of time! I think I have really old dani mogstad kits on my external that i'll never get rid of)

I think this is why I purge everything. Things in my house, on my hard drive, at work, etc.....

I don't keep old clothes I have no use for. I don't keep old household items, paperwork, etc. I've never kept every piece of artwork my children have made or Mother's Day card from 1st grade with macaroni. Even though our digital "stuff" is "out of the way" it's still unnecessary clutter to me. Gives me anxiety I guess.

I've purged before and will again eventually, but as life has gotten busier I've gotten a lot less willing to spend time purging my scrap stash. Storage is cheap, and looking past kits I don't want to use takes a lot less time than sorting through item by item to save the few things I will still use.

I am not a good purger. Period.

I have copies of everything I've purchased tucked away on a EHD that I rarely use, but doesn't cost me any $$ or take up HD space. Believe it or not, I've actually used things that were 10+ years old.

I delete 85% of the kits I have in my stash once they've been used one time. The oldest thing in my stash is no more than 4-5 years old.

I do have a small stash of "essentials" that are neutral alphas, masks, brushes, etc. that have things that are very very old but that's it.

I've been digitally scrapping since 2003 so imagine what my stash would look like if I had kept every single thing I'd purchased or CTed since then!

I have some really old stuff, but I do go through and delete every so often. The last couple years I started tagging it with the year I acquired it, so that I know if it's still unused in a couple years that it's time to let it go, or play with it.

Mine's not exactly organized only by store and designer but the really old stuff is tucked away on an EHD. There just in case...

I have deleted a little, maybe 10%, total hoarder here. But often I know I have something and can't find it. I love shopping too though, so it's still pleasurable for me.

I think I just finally purged some of Dani's stuff when I switched to a Mac.

I do have some things that are from like 2007 I still use. Alphas primarily. I think I still have in regular rotation alphas from Zoe, Fee and Julie! LOL!

This thread inspired me to go purge from designers that have never been at SSD and all those little freebies I will never use. Oh and blog trains... lol

I spent a few hours yesterday doing just that. Thank you for the push.

Quite a few years back I purged a ton of stuff. I have not done it in a long time though. I have lots of space so I am not worried.

I still have several Dani kits and still have all my Shabby Princess stuff LOL I have purged a little, but if I look at the kit and still like it, why would I delete it? My stuff is pretty organized so I can find things.

This is pretty much me!! I've been downloading since 2006! LOL A couple of years ago, I did, however, purge about 40 or 50 CDs with OLD stuff, like freebies, as well as kits that I swear were so darn cute. LOL I still have tons more. I need to be a purger, not a collector.

That's my goal as well! I'm currently sorting through all my layouts and kits to see what I have and haven't used. If I haven't used a kit and it's not my style anymore or was a freebie then I'll get rid of it.

I like purging but if I've used a kit, I find it hard to let it go. I just keep buying bigger EHDs (I'm up to a 10 TB) since it's so cheap and make sure that I keep my Backblaze subscription up to date for cloud backup.

Now, I will say, I rarely delete a template! I think I still have some of Cindy's from the days when she offered them as freebies at Peppermint Creative. LOL!

Purging does...not come naturally to me, lol.
I have plenty of physical items to declutter, so I don't want to spend time purging stuff that's contained in a little external hard drive. There's just too many other things I'd rather do, haha.

I do have some things that are from like 2007 I still use. Alphas primarily. I think I still have in regular rotation alphas from Zoe, Fee and Julie! LOL!
I LOVED fee's alphas!! I always felt that we shouldn't have made it a thing to have alphas in each kit but have super awesome stand alone ones like the ones fee made. Universal that could be used in all kits.

I'm still a sucker for a unique or interesting alpha. Fee always had some of the coolest! I still pull a lot of Shawna's out too.

This is the same situation I was in. I had so much stuff when I lost everything, while I was able to get I'd say 80% back through redownloading from Backblaze & stores, there was some stuff I lost permanently

This! My time to actually check what to keep and what to delete is more precious!
