Default Thoughts on the Cricut

I have had a coworker offer to sell me her Cricut for about $100, with some extra blades, several cutting mats, and I think two cartridges....but it is two years old. She says she only used it for six months, but I am not sure that is a reasonable price. Also, I do not paper scrap anymore, I do only digi or hybrid. Is a cricut even worth it for a hybrid girl? I have never been really big on paper piecing....

Any input is appreciated!

Melissa - I just got a Cricut, and while I haven't actually used it for a project yet, I know it will come in handy for hybrid. I don't have any punches for shapes & stuff, so the fact that my Cricut can do it makes my life easier, lol.

I don't want to buy the ultra-expensive cartridges either ($90 for 1 font???), so I'm getting a program called Sure Cuts A Lot. You install it on your computer, and connect the computer to the Cricut with a USB cord, and you can then cut any True Type font with your Cricut, plus you can link your letters AND cut any SVG file (a vector graphic). It costs about $75, but that is less than the cost of 1 single Cricut cartridge, and basically turns your Cricut into a Wishblade.

Oh that is great info Jaedyn! Do you know if it works for all Cricuts or is it just on the Expression (the big one)? This is the smaller sized Cricut....

Oh THAT is cool! I've been buying my cartridges on ebay, they're about $28 or so (new), but that would be SO much better!!! TFS!

Melissa - the program works for all the Cricuts - I have the small one too (6x12). The only thing you have to know is if the version is compatible (when you first turn on the machine, it will say Cricut Version ___). If your Cricut isn't compatible, I believe you can update it somehow.

Just google Sure Cuts A Lot, and you will find out for sure .

I say that is a goor pricee and once you get the hang of it, you may use it more than you think! I still paper scrap but I can't wait to have my own scrsp room so I can put my Cricut up and leave it so it will be accesible and I can use it all the time

I have one of the smaller cricut's and I love mine. I've had it about 3 years or so now. I still paper scrap so I use it for that but I also use it alot for DD's school projects .

The smaller cricuts still retail for over $150, so you got a good deal. The cuttlebug isn't cheap either.

There are more and more digital templates out there that you can purchase with the file to use the SCAL software. I haven't tried it personally but I'm thinking about getting the SCAL software. Think about all the cool stuff I could cut!!!!

I had the expression along with the Sure Cuts A Lot software. So many options available with it. I sold it after I went digi but there are times that I do wish I still had my bugg

I debated, for a while between the Cricut and the Silhouette... I ended up with the Silhouette because of the Print and Cut. And, it came highly reccomanded from my LSS. I also talked to them about the renting of cartridges and she told me that most store won't do it because Cricut was calling it a violation, I believe, of copyright... Not sure though. Neither of the LSS here do it because of that but, one, which has since shut down, did. However, one of the LSS has a swap crop. You bring in your cartridges and can borrow and swap with others for that time, or more if you both agree...

ETA: Here's Provo's take on the renting of cartridges: http://www.cricut.com/%28S%281cdzt2v...ookieSupport=1

Thanks Tabby and Jamie! I have pretty much talked myself out of it...I have gotten used to using my scissors and it is kind of therapeutic for me, gets me back into the touch and texture part of paper scrapping I loved. I just think, even though this in particular is a really good deal, it is a lot of $$ and since I do not like to paper piece I will not use it.

I really do appreciate everyone's input though!
