How many of you have gone back to college as adults?
How was your experience?
My first day is today.. in a few hours.. I'm stressed lol I actually am going about this in the perfect 'let's not get stressed way' and only taking one single course this semester to ease myself back into the whole thing.. but i'm still stressed overwhelmed. over analyzing.. you know.. the normal stuff In preparation so far I have... painted my nails hot pink. nothing else.. haven't even showered.. but hot pink nails seemed critical.

Awwww! I haven't gone back myself, but my husband just graduated with his degree at age 48. He was a lot like you (minus the hot pink nails). He was super nervous and overanalyzed everything. Honestly though, he loved it and ended up graduating summa cum laude.
I think that adults tend to take it more seriously than kids, so I have NO DOUBT that you are going to be awesome!! I can't wait to hear all about it! What class are you starting with? |

The dreadfulness that is writers comp.. LOL. It's the only gen ed I require right now, so I'm trying to get it done and over with. It's also the course I dropped after 2 weeks my first round of college- because I thought it was lame haha.. There's 25 kids in my class.. hopefully they're not all babies.

I am a senior at San Francisco State! It started getting weird when I realized I was old enough to be the mother of sime of my classmates. Lol. It turns out life experience means a lot. I would let the teacher know early on about my two jobs & two young kids. They usually had good tips on how to study around that. My last class was microbiology. I would not have gotten through it without my 19yr old classmates. We still keep in touch. They were all so good at formulas & numbers. I was good at research & presentations. My point is, everyone has something to offer. Take a deep breath. You'll be fine.

They all smell bad. I just got home.............. I forgot what 18yr old boys stink like. holy crap.
it was distracting stink. stank. stunk. my professor was a cool guy though. He's actually an art history teacher (and writers comp? i don't know.. LOL.. he said he loved human expression. he was cool). He thankfully is infact significantly older than I am

I started my degree @ 25 & im kind of in the middle of the age range (27) as there is 18-40+ in my class. Yes i definitely notice differences between me and those who havent got so much life experience behind them.

I went back to do a Masters degree about 7 years after I'd last studied. I did it part time as I was also working, which meant a lot of night classes. Before I actually started it I was worried how I would ever settle down to study given how much of my otherwise free time it would take up... (I didn't have kids then)... but I soon got back into the routine and I ended up totally loving my course (Environmental Science). Not many 'kids' in my course though, but alot of 'adults' also working like me...

Me! I was 28 when I went back, I graduated with my Associates in May at 33. Keira's cancer & Harper's unexpected pregnancy slowed me down. I usually took 7 to 10 credits a semester. I only took 3 semesters off in the almost 5 years I went!
I enjoyed it, I had more in common with my instructors, than the students most of the time. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by nesser1981; 09-04-2014 at 09:03 AM. |

I graduated with my Associates in Liberal Arts at 28. I think you are more focused when you have kids. Then you are when you don't. Yeah it was a challenge trying to get everything done but, I did it. Sometimes I wondered if I would remain sane I did some classes online also. To keep from having to need a baby sitter. My son was only one fixing to be two at the time.

I graduated with a BS in nursing in my 40's. It was something I put off and put off, and finally decided it was time. I started at about age 38 when my youngest started school. I took it "easy" for a semester, then took a full load while the kids were in school. I graduated college with an Associates degree a year after my oldest daughter graduated with a BS in Nursing--so I had to finish the BS degree--but I did that part after I had a nursing job AND two kids still at home!! (there was a 13 year lag between oldest daughter and youngest daughter---and I had a son older than the daughter!) Good luck!

I just started my third & final year of college. My first day was interesting. I was 23 and super nervous, however my philosophy teacher (who was my first class) was amazing and I instantly felt at ease.

I've been thinking about this for a long time. I have my Medical Office Admin Degree but I want to go to Culinary School. I'd like to become a pastry chef!
I'm 46 and I feel like I would be ancient when I finally graduated! I'd have to do part time as I still have small kids at home and I'm hoping I can find some night school courses to get me started. Good luck! |

I'm doing at home school for my work at H&M. Does that count? I know school is different here in the Netherlands. It's a legit school that also gives full time classes and I will get the same diploma. It is like a specialist in sales education. Thats how I best can describe it. I'm 26 now.

Congrats on making the decision to go back! I've thought about it, but with three little ones age 10 and under; it's just not in the cards for me and my family right now. Keep us informed how its going!!

That's awesome La! I don't think that going back and just starting at any age is a bad thing if it is something you desire in life. I know that it is on my bucket list to one day finish and get my degree.
I have about 30 credits already from way back in 1995 - 1996 when I was going to college full time as a single mother with a 4 and 2 year old! OMG! No wonder I couldn't finish. At the time I wanted a degree in Biology. But.....that has all changed now. I want to get a Master of Science Degree in Health and Kinesiology. Being the fitness nut I am, this is definitely something I am interested in therefore will hopefully keep me working toward that goal. I first want to finish obtaining my Personal Trainer Certification. That is definitely a goal for next year and then college....well, we will see in the next few years. My baby graduates this year so hopefully it will be much easier with all the children grown. Hopefully.......LOL
