Flavors You Can't Get Into
I cook dinner at home almost every single night. One of my go-to types is Mexican food. Everyone in the family loves it, and it's easy to make GF-friendly for my husband.
With that said, I have done my best to get into cooking with cilantro and/or lime since so many Mexican recipes call for one or both... but I just can't. They are both such strong flavors, and I just can't adjust my palette to them. Are there any flavors/seasonings/tastes that you can't get past in your cooking (or that you avoid ordering at a restaurant)? |

I had to laugh, because even before I read your post, having just seen the header, I was thinking that tex-mex flavour were my answer, with the exception of lime and cillantro, both of which I love!

I was going to post that same link that KCB did. I hate cilantro! I've tried to like it and I just don't.

I LOVE cilantro (coriander as we call it) - I put it in everything I can!
Garlic, curry, chilli on the otherhand... I've got to stay away from them.

I love cilantro (and yes I call it coriander too!) and garlic AND lime! We use them a lot in Asian food! Yum yum!

Chipotle....(the pepper). Just can't do them.

I like ALLLL the flavors. I'm not a picky eater... we have a bursting spice cabinet. The one thing I will say gets me sometimes is dill. It depends what it's in, though. My DH likes to add it to tuna fish sandwiches and I can't handle that. But I love dill pickles.
The only thing I absolutely *can't* do is food that is so hot/spicy that I can barely taste it. I don't understand why people like that at all. Curry is yummy, but only mild heat for me. |

i can't think of any spice I don't like if it's in the right combination or not too over-powering. I don't mind cilantro but only if its not overly powerful in the dish. The same goes for mint, I like it in small measures. I like mildly spicy stuff but I don't enjoy it if its too hot and spicy, burning my nose and throat. I use a hot pepper spice from a local gourmet shop and love the smoky flavor to it but I have to use it sparingly b/c of the heat in it.

I am not picky at all - I love curries, peppers, and all spices except for CILANTRO I HATE it - and yes, I have the soap gene evidently (as do my mother and father but one of my sisters loves it). I love the lime part though so I just substitute parsley for the cilantro and keep the lime (lime boosts the other flavors so much but I really don't find lime to be strong in and of itself and even just a couple teaspoons makes a difference).

Hate cilantro! Also can't stand cardamom which is a shame because I love curry lol. If it's just a slight flavouring I can tolerate it but if it's overpowering I can't touch it.
If a recipe asks for lemon or lime juice I never put it in either now I think of it.

Ooh see now I'm a spicier the better person. I can eat a vindaloo or phal curry and it doesn't affect me so I can taste the flavour rather than burning now lol. I feel sad if I have a curry and it has no spice. My fridge is full of chill, I couldn't eat a raw one though, they have to be cooked into my food.

I'm a Supertaster so I dislike a lot of bitter veggies -- especially brussel sprouts. I'm not a huge fan of cilantro either.
And mushrooms. I do not like mushrooms or the flavor or mushrooms. |

I'm generally pretty easygoing about food - I like most of it, much to the scale's chagrin. However, I can't stand bell peppers, raw onion, beer or wine (uncooked).

Ginger..I hate ginger. which bums me out cause lots of recipes call for it but I just hate it and in general I like most.. and also alcohol. I hate beer and wine and things that taste like alcohol. I like mixed drinks that don't taste like alcohol though haha! Mushrooms but it's the texture more than the taste. and sage maybe? There is one spice I don't use often that I don't love..sage I think...

I'm pretty easy going about food, too, as long as it's vegetarian. I don't like strong garlic. It's not the taste, it's that I spend the next 24 hours unable to get the taste out of my mouth. I'm not a big fan of sun-dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers, but they're tolerable in small doses. And I'm with some of the rest of you on very spicy food ("very" defined as a couple of steps above mild, LOL). And here's a weird one-carbonation. I hate soda, beer, sparkling water...everything carbonated.

I don't care for cilantro, celery seed, or Old Bay. Not a rosemary fan either.

I love cilantro. The things I hate are what normal people love, I cannot stand to eat meat or meat flavored things and I also hate berries and dumplings. I have texture issues more than flavor issues.

I'm adding licorice to my list - yuck. And I really can't stand star anise - the stuff that's in 5 Spice mix. Just an hint of that stuff and I won't eat it.

Well considering I've eaten both lime & cilantro the past few days, I clearly don't have an issue with those.
My main food issues are texture related but I do have problems with some fruit flavored things, banana especially. I like an actual banana or strawberry but when it's like in ice cream or some other form it's weird. |

I love to cook with star anise! Love pho for the star anise, cloves, etc. Love Sambuca. Love pfeffernusse too! Not a fan of black licorice candy though

Anise is so gross. Lynnette, fake banana flavor is not a flavor I like either.

I also hate spicy food - my palate is kid friendly level of spicy due to gastro issues.

I love hot and spicy, but since developing GERD I had to stop eating it altogether. That is until I found a company that made all natural spices... nothing but real foods in them... so my issue with spicy causing my gerd to act up was never the 'heat' like I thought, but the additives and preservatives in the mixes at the store (or the combination of chemical ingredients with the heat). If it was something you were missing having on an occasion it may be worth it to research some natural products to give a try.
