Default Mopping...how often??

I'm just really curious...how often do you mop your floors? I try to mop (like really hardcore mop, not just Swiffer) about once every two weeks but just can't seem to keep my kitchen floor looking clean. Mopping is my absolute LEAST favorite chore; I mean I despise and dread it like nothing else. I'm not sure if I can make myself do it any more often than that. What about you guys??

When it looks like it needs it which means not as often as it really needs to be, but I try to wipe up spills immediately, and sweep once a day (I lie..I want to sweep once a day...probably every other day).

I hate mopping, too. Like Darcy, I spot clean and sweep relatively often. I prolly mop once a month. Does that make me a slob?? LOL

That looks bad now that I read it....I am not a slob, really I'm not. I'm kind of a neat freak (about most things) but, with big kids it seems I don't need to do it as often. I Swiffer once a week is all.

Sweep after every meal, if not it looks like someone threw a box of crumbs everywhere, thank you 3 small-ish children, all walking crazy running around children. When we had a crawler it was more often.
Mop, mop about once a month.

It's pointless here (which is actually true about most of the chores in this house) lol

Not as often as I probably should, because I'm lazy and I HATE cleaning. This goes for pretty much all of the cleaning, not just the mopping, lol. And I only swiffer wetjet.

I have a steam mop. No dirty water, to wringing the thing out. I now mop twice a week. Before it might have been once every two months.

I have a Steam Vac too and it is wonderful so it probably gets done once a week or every other week...but I DESPISE it so it is one of the chores my oldest DD inherited or my DH...but I can't seem to keep my wooden floors looking fabulous and wonder if I need to actually MOP MOP with a regular mop and pine sol or something that is wooden floor approved....

I used to sweep several times a day, and mopped my kitchen floor on my hands and knees. That was many moons ago! lol. My kitchen was smaller then and I was a lot younger.

Now, I have Saltillo tiles throughout most of my downstairs. They are uneven (because they are each handmade) and it's a pain to clean. I vacuum them maybe once a week, and mop maybe once a month. Since they are clay, dirt comes up through them from the ground underneath. Even though they are sealed, they never seem clean. Good thing they look the same dirty or clean!

I feel so much better after reading most of these posts!

We sweep everyday, a few times on somedays when the kids decide to be extra-messy... but mopping is another story. I think I'd be much more motivated to do it if we didn't have a sheepdog who loves to dig and lay in the mud. I can clean and clean, then she comes in and messes it all up. (And this dog refuses to come in when it's raining which is awful, she's like a dirt/mud sponge). Also the kids' dad always wears his muddy shoes in the house! Urgh.. it's awful!

get yourselves a GOOD steam mop! I don't mop as much as I should probably but it is so much nicer having a steam mop than having to fill a bucket etc.. and it cleans GOOD!

This is the one I have http://www.oceansales.ca/our-product...steam-mop.html The initial price is up there but at the same time you don't have to buy any cleaners because it just uses the steam and hot water to clean... and has reusable pads that you just throw in the wash.

I kinda <3 it

Ugh..I hate it too. I sweep 2-3 times a day..after every meal..b/c my kids are crumbsters and I'm always barefoot and hate to feel grit under my feet. I mop 1-2 times a week too but also it's b/c of the kids and the sticky icky messes they make. I did not mop or sweep nearly as much before we had kids b/c it just wasn't necessary.

I also swiffer and spot clean when we have a spill.

I feel better after reading this post! I have LOTS of tile in my house (all walkways, hallways, baths (3) and kitchen) and this is the chore that I put off all the time. I mop the kitchen the most.....maybe 2-3 times a month depending on what it looks like. The rest of it.......I am just not even going to talk about. I do vacuum the tile when I do the carpets AND when I clean toilets, I clorox wipe the tiles around it. SO it is clean but not as clean as it could be. KWIM?

Never...my husband does it. Seriously, we've been married a little over three years and I haven't mopped once. I hate it, so he does it. I'm thinking I need a steam mop though. I'm totally drooling over KCB's link!

I sweep every day ... or should I say my kids do. Mop about once a month. Really mopping. Not the swifter thing. That does not work and makes my floor gross.

O.k., do those steam mops really work?

I think I sweep twice a week (it gets SO dusty here!) and mop every other week. I agree about the kitchen floors--I don't understand how they get so dirty compared to my wood panel floors in the living and dining area.

And I REALLY want one of those steam mops. I just haven't wanted to spend the $$ to get one. I'm thinking it might be worth it though just to never have to see a mop and bucket again!

sweep everyday and mop every couple days. We have six cats and a dog though plus the boys track in alot of dirt so I have to sweep at least once a day and mop a couple times a week so the house stays clean. I have a steam mop though so it is so easy to do. I just put some water in and push the mop around....no chemicals only water

Almost never.

LOL - let me elaborate! The kitchen has carpeting - the kind that spills bead up on immediately and a paper towel cleans it up in a jiffy. Bathroom has linoleum but I have throw rugs all over the bathroom (in front of sink, in front of tub, in front of toilet) and I run a damp cloth around the perimeter once a week when I clean the bathroom. All the throws get pulled out and washed about every other month and I run a quick mop over the floor then, but it really doesn't even need that. Floors get very cold here in the winter (even with good insulation) so I have carpeting instead of wood floors.

With just DD and I things stay pretty clean around here. She's a neat freak like me and is always wiping and picking up. My motto for everything is do a little bit every day to avoid doing a LOT once in a while.

Over the years of living on bases and having a dog, DH, DS, and a myriad of boys from toddler to teens in and out, I've done my share of mopping - it was something I did at least once a week in the kitchen due to high traffic.

well I never want to mop, I hate it more then cleaning toilets. I wish I could get away with mopping once every two weeks but with my messy crew I have to sweep after every meal we and mop every other day!!! We have to swiffer on the non mopping days under the table. Blargh...thank goodness I have a 9 and 13 year old to take a day or I'd go stark raving mad!!!

I rarely mop...that's DH's job!! If I have to clean up his whiskers from shaving and all the pee in the bathroom from having four little boys and a big boy with bad aim then he can mop the downstairs! LOL

Now that we are showing the house, the downstairs gets mopped every couple of days but before that it was maybe once a month with spot mopping when the boys would spill something.

Ok I am going to sound like a big freak.

Every day!

Our entire house is hard floors with a few rugs. I sweep multiple times a day and at least one room gets mopped every day. The kitchen gets mopped a couple times a week, the wood floors at least once a week and the bathrooms usually twice a week. I might skip a week on the boy's tile floor.

I also have 2 different mops- one for wood floors and one for the rest of the house. I wish I could use a steam mop but our wood floors are solid wood and it has been over 20 years since they were sealed.

So yeah I am a freak. I will say that since I keep up with cleaning the floors it takes me no time to do it. Sometimes I am really mean and will mop when the boys are eating. Then they have to sit there until it drys- usually about 10 minutes. BUT it is just my way of keeping my youngest still long enough to eat his meal.

Can you use a steam mop on wood laminate floors? I'd love to get one but I've always been afraid of messing up the floors.

I have this steam mop
http://www.amazon.com/Haan-Cleaning-...8850426&sr=1-2

The first review on there is negative but most of them are 5 stars. I've never had a problem with mine or think it's flimsy nor have had to press down hard to get things clean. But the review was a year old when I bought mine so maybe there were changes in the model.

I've had it for about a year now. I use it on my slate kitchen floor, the cheap laminate tiles in the bathroom & my sealed bamboo living room floor. It's fine for any sealed hard surface floor. I tested mine on a part behind my sofa first just to be sure. I love it. It just needs water. Comes with two pads & you can get more but I haven't needed too. I just toss the one I've used in the washing machine to go with the next load & pretty much always have a clean one waiting to be used.

It gets up everything, including smeared ripe raisins & dried up yogurt.

I rarely mop. We sweep at least once a day, sometimes 2-3 times; the joys of having 3 kids, a hairy dog, and a hubby (and myself) prone to dropping things. lol Plus we also immediately clean up any spills and stuff like that.

It never fails, within 24 hours after I mop, something gets spilled on the floor.

See I hate our steam mop it a shark, I loved it like the first 2 times I used it but now I think it sucks!!! Maybe we just have too much traffic on our floors to use it. It would take me like 3 pads to mop our kitchen floor (and that was with mopping it every other day) and it never got clean around the baseboard.....all it did was push the crap up next to it and in the corners and I'd still have to get on my hands and knees to scrub all along every stinking wall and under my cupboards!!! Also all the pads shrunk (even though I washed them just as the directions said) and the started folding at the corners when I would try to mop...bleck......P.I.T.A!!!!!

I'll stick with my O'Cedar Pro Scrub mom!!!

I vacuum (how do you spell that?) once a week, sometimes twice.
But mopping....I am emberassed to say but once every quarter. I know better things to do. The same things count for window cleaning and with three cats they never stay clean that long.

my steam mop came with a triangular shaped head and a rectangular shaped head. It came with a purple fringy looking thing for the rectangular head which is the one I use most often. It came with plain white micrpfiber covers for both heads (2 for each). I dont use them alot but my son does. I can defenitely tell a big difference when I use the steam mop though over a regular mop. If I keep up with it doing it every two or three days walking barefoot through the house my feel will stay relatively clean.

the only thing I miss from when I used to mop is I used Pine-sol and I love the way it smells so I dont get the pinesol scent anymore

Back in the 90s when we had a doggie, mom used to sweep floors every day (we had a white floor).

Now in my flat I have wood in rooms (I clean them with special vet wipes maybe once in 2-3 months), tiles in kitchen and bathroom (appx. once in 2 weeks) and laminate in the little office room (once in a month...) - or more frequiently when they get dirty

Well this thread made me mop my floors today. It had been a while shall we say.

I use a steam mop as well. The shark sucks. Mine broke in less than a year. It doesn't get the water/steam really hot enough to kill anything and I felt like it didn't really do the job. Now I have a Eureka and it does a good job. But probably since I mop so infrequently, it gets dirty pretty quickly and I have to change out to the second pad before I'm done. So I really need more mop pads. I kinda think I can make them though vs. the price of new ones.

I don't use it on my wood floors though. It does get really hot and I'm afraid what it would do to them. But on my stone/tile floors, I love it. Every once in a while i use my swiffer and I hate the smell. I'm just sensitive so I love that there is no smell to the mop.
