35mm f/1.8G or 50mm f/1.8G...
Yes, another lens thread...
I wish I was getting a new lens right now, but this is more... what should I get once we have money saved up. So... I have a nikon D40 and the 50mm lens hasn't been available as AF-S until April (at least I'm pretty sure).. and now it is! They are very close in price (on amazon)... so, which would you choose and why?? (PS the only lens I have is the kit lens) |

Depends on what you want to use it for. When you use your kit lens at 55mm, do you feel too close to shoot inside? If yes, get the 35mm.
I have the 50 and love it, but everyone shoots differently. Everyone here seems to love the 30/35mm lately, but I wouldn't like it as much as the 85mm I don't think.

I own both (well for my Canon so they might be a bit different) and since I bought my 35mm (February) , I haven't put my 50mm back on my camera!!! They are both really comparable when taking photos but I love the extra room my 35mm gives me and I love that it "focuses" so much faster then the 50mm.

I only have a 50mm so I'm no help... but I think it depends on how much space you have indoors and whether your a full picture type of person or just a head shot type of person... because for indoors it's hard to get much more than just a head shot if you have smaller rooms.

I also agree that it depends on how much indoor space you have I LOVE my 50 mm, but I tend to use my 28-75mm most of the time

Sarah, I bought the 50 because so many people seem to love it, well, I hated it! Ended up selling it & getting the 35! She's my baby! lol It rarely comes off of my camera!! Only time I take it off is if I want to use my zoom.

I have a 50mm and have a love/hate relationship with it. That being said I'm getting ready to buy the 35mm so I'll have both.
Sorry I'm not much help. But I'd go for the 35mm.

When I was/am decided which prime to get (50 vs 35) I took a little time and opened up a variety of photos to see where I shoot at most. I thought it would be zoomed all the way (so close to 50) but more often than not, I'm wide angle or mid-way. So my next lens will probably be the 30 or 35mm. So while you are saving...just keep an eye out on how you use your kit lens, then buy the one that is closer to where YOU shoot the most.

i have the 50 and i ADORE it.
one thing with the 50 is that it is closest to what the natural eye sees...and the photos you can take with it are so beautiful. almost every photo on my photo blog are taken with the 50. http://denisebeattyphotography.blogspot.com/ but i think there is a learning curve and it does take some practice. but i would rather shoot with it than any other lens i have. that being said i am getting ready to buy the 28mm -- i am looking forward to the challenge.
