question about cake balls
when you make cakeballs do you need to have almond bark or can you use chocolate chips for the coating? I bought chocolate chips and didnt realize the recipe calls for almond bark. I can run back out and get the almond bark if it is absolutely necasary of course.

i think you could use choc chips if you added in some shortening.
but really you should wait until someone more knowledgeable comes along

i use the chocolate or white chocolate bark from Kroger.
it's designed for dipping, so not sure if the chips would be a PITA, but i'm sure they'd still taste yummy, just not sure if it would be a pain to coat them. good luck! |

Yea I use chocolate chips for dipping buck eyes (peanut butter balls). Ill probably just run up to the grocery store and get some almond bark though. Ive never used it before though so I wasnt sure how it would taste. I bought white chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips.

yeah if you have any crisco laying around you can use the chips..but id' get the almond bark (it's super cheap too)

I have to take two movies back to the blockbuster express at the store down the road so Ill just get some almond bark then. I was planning on making buckeyes which I use chocolate chips for so I figured it would work for cake balls as well. Im not so sure the cake balls are gonna last til christmas. I made the first cake (butter pecan) and even without frosting it tastes delicious!! It has my house filled with this amazing buttery sweet smell. (I love butter pecan flavor LOL) So yea might end up making a second batch depending on how these turn out.

Yes! Just add a tiny bit of shortening or golf wax.

a cake ball is a delicious/yummy dessert where you bake a cake and crumble it with a tub of frosting in a bowl then roll the mixture into a ball then dip them in chocolate (white/dark/milk) or almond bark. You can dip them into coconut. sprinkles, nuts etc or do swirls with a different type of chocolate to decorate them. I'm gonna make cake pops this weekend or attempt to anyway so I would like to know the best thing to cover them with too. Was thinking about fondant but that seems like alot of work.

I use candy melts - http://www.wilton.com/store/site/pro...elts&killnav=1 for dipping. I buy the white and milk chocolate ones from the bulk section of my grocery store.

I think if you add a little shortening (crisco) then it'll work. I did that with the chocolate chips last year when making buckeyes. They turned out ok. I just wasnt sure because all the recipes for cake balls were calling for almond bark. (what is funny is I did not know almond bark was used for dipping LOL I thought it was made with almonds )

You could also mix the chocolate chips with Paraffin (edible wax) which will make the chocolate harden and stick. That's what my mom uses to make her almond joys.

I use the candy melts when making peanut butter balls.
I've never made cake balls before, but after reading this thread that will be changing! I usually make peanut butter balls as teacher gifts. I think I'll be doing cake balls now, too. Yum! |

I've used chocolate chips plenty of times for dipping, but I melt a little parrafin in the chocolate to make it easier.
