Default QOTD - Ice Skating - 12.13.15

Do you ice skate? Besides Jamie, have any of you done it competitively? Have you ever been to an ice skating show or championship? Do you have a favorite ice skater?

Yes I do! I grew up on a lake so we were in skates as soon as we could walk pretty much. My daughter learned the winter she was 3 since we had moved back to Maine by then. I've never competed, it's more of a fun thing to do during the long winters here and most people up here skate on lakes not at indoor rinks (hockey teams get most of the rink time up here and hockey is a BIG sport!). Also, there really aren't a lot of indoor rinks up here anyway. I don't follow skating now very much but growing up my favorite skater was Dorothy Hamill and Robin Cousins (showing my age here a little bit )

I only 'ice skated' once, and that was in a pair of skates that were too small and it was in a friend's driveway and I kept hitting patches of grass that were poking through and wiping out.

So... basically, no.

I don't. I tried once with friends, on a school trip, I ended with shaking jelly legs and a mental breakdown... So I never try again... It's the same with me not wanting to learn to ride a bike...
It turned out me falling down and breaking my left elbow when I was 6 left me with a trauma

Oh yes!! Skated competitively growing up and have been teaching for quite a while! Back in May I went to a conference and met Dick Button and Brian Orser - that was very neat! Learned a lot from them! Michelle Kwan is probably my favorite skater - though for current skaters I like Ashley Wagner.

I took one ice skating class as a kid. Don't know why that didn't continue cause I loved it. Probably $$$. But, yeah, I've been ice skating plenty of times. I absolutely LOVE watching figure skating on TV, and I follow the competitive season every year. I don't know if I have a favorite skater right now. I just love it all. I really love listening to Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir's commentating though. They are awesome together.

I went once, as a teenager, to an indoor ice rink at the mall. I went with my church youth group. The best memory was going through the (closed) mall after and taking pictures in the photo booth. I still have the pictures. The skating was the least of the experience. I am NOT a skater. I have weak ankles and it was hard for me to even stand on them. Fun day all together though.

I never did it competitively but I used to go with friends when I was younger, I had my own skates with big pink pompoms on them. I tried it again when Ian was in preschool and I have become heavier and clumsier and I think my ankles have gotten weaker. It hurt and I haven't done it since.

I've never been ice-skating myself, but am hoping to have my boys try it over the holiday break this year.

We used to go for fun at our local leisure centre, but haven't for a while. We are deteremined to do this in Jan/Feb......it's about 1 1/2 hours away from us, and looks amazing:

I do ice skate and I love it. I skated on figure skates until I was in middle school when I switched to hockey skates. I just do it for fun though.

I've never ice skated. I live in the south! I could probably try it but, I'd be terrified I'd break something then not be able to take care of my kids. Yes, that equates to me being a chicken.

I haven't ice skated since I was a kid.... I have horribly weak ankles so that and roller skating is not a good thing...

I took lessons for a few years as a kid, so did lily. Darcy made a little ice rink on our driveway for a few years for lily to skate on

Oh yes, loved skating as a kid. Never did it competitively (because my mom heard that the coach at that level was mean) so I got to repeat year after year of classes but I had fun with the classes.

Actually went skating a lot when I found out the guy I was dating out of college also skated. Been a long time since I've skated since.

Took my oldest nephew skating when he was about 2 or 3. Even have movies of it somewhere.

Love watching it on tv now. Scotty Hamilton was one of my favorites to watch. I also enjoyed watching Dorothy Hamill, Torvill & Dean and Gordeeva & Grinkov. And I sported a Dorothy Hamill haircut when it was all the rage in the 70's.

Mwah!! <3 <3 <3

I highly encourage everyone to do it at least once! And there are tons of rinks all over the place - you just need to look for them!

We usually take the kids skating a few times a year. I took a few lessons (maybe 3) as a kid.

I think I went a few times as a kid, but I never went enough to be good at it. (And by "good at it," I really mean "able to let go of the side.") I used to like roller skating and did that more with friends. I don't think I'd want to try now.

I used to go ice skating a lot as a kid. I still love it, but it's been a while since I last did it.

I've never skated myself, but until a few years ago, I was VERY into figure skating. I still run a figure skating tv schedule and a Michelle Kwan site and forum. (She's the best and a total sweetheart )

I figure skated lots as a kid. The precision teams were my favourite part. We take our kids about once a week or so all winter to either the local indoor or outdoor rink. I really don't follow the competition on tv anymore, just not enough time in a day...

We used to skate on the local pond as kids. My husband plays ice hockey and he builds and ice rink in our backyard every weekend. He builds a frame, lines it with a tarp and fills it with water from a creek in our yard. Then we wait for it to freeze. Some years we only get a couple days of skating, some years we get 2 months. This winter is not looking good so far! We have 4 teenage boys and they all ice skate and play hockey on our rink, too.
