Kindle Paperwhite vs. Kindle Fire HD - help!
So last week I ordered a Kindle Paperwhite to replace my older Kindle Keyboard, and it should be here today. Last night, I saw that all Kindle Fires are $30 off through tomorrow and I'm wondering if I should get that instead. It's actually cheaper with the discount, and more versatile, but I liked the fact that the Paperwhite was a dedicated eeader.
Pros of the Paperwhite: -Dedicated eeader: I won't get distracted by other stuff like I might on the Kindle Fire. -I can hand my Kindle Keyboard over to DS for his use. -E-ink, easy on the eyes. Cons of the Paperwhite: -More expensive -Less verstaile Pros of the Kindle Fire: -Can read all kinds of e-books (epub, etc.) - not just Kindle versions. Our local library has two e-book libraries and I have a hard time getting good books for Kindle because there's so much demand, but there are a ton of books available in the ePub format. -Could read children's books on it, too. -Easier to use in the kitchen with recipes & cookbooks Cons of the Kindle Fire: -Kids will want to use it. It's another "screen." (I don't consider the Paperwhite a "screen." -I'll get distracted by other stuff. -I already have a smartphone and laptop; do I need a tablet?!? Thoughts?!?!? |

Personally, I'd go with the Paperwhite. I think it's superior for reading and I want mine just to read on. I've got a smartphone and laptop to surf and check e-mail, play games on etc. I'm a huge fan of e-ink and I really love, love, love my Paperwhite.

Paperwhite. It's easier on the eyes to read, the Fire doesn't give you all that much extra as far as being another 'screen' - you won't get distracted. It's not easy to navigate with in the web sense. For someone who has all the other stuff, spend a little more on the Paperwhite now - you'll be happy to have the reader.

if all you really want ot do is read then get the Paperwhile. The e-ink is a superior reading experience.
I just got the 8.9" Fire HDX for Christmas but I use it to play my hidden object, match 3 and solitaire games as well as watching videos on Prime and surf the web, things. My laptop is too bulky to drag around just because I want to play Fairway golf or surf Pinterest or Instagram in bed. I really like having the tablet functions for those. No one, not even DH is allowed to play with my Kindle. I don't find the Fire to bother my eyes at all when I read on it, which I do quite a bit but the e-ink is a less glaring page. |

I'll be the voice of dissent. I love my eeader, but the 2 things that made me choose it over a Fire were lower cost and better battery life. If reading on your phone doesn't bother your eyes and your library has a better non - Kindle selection, I'd get a Fire.

I'm always about getting a device that does as much as possible. I just got the Fire and I already have a NookColor. Love them both and never even considered getting just an eeader.
You've got 4 kids so you are used to sharing and you might just need another "screen" someday. |

I love the Paperwhite for reading. I love the fire for the parental controls, and watching shows on Amazon Prime. It's really just a bigger phone though. DH even rooted ours to look like his Android phone.
My phone causes ADD, but reading on the Paperwhite is an escape from notifications, etc.

I have the first generation Kindle Fired HD and my kids just both got the 2nd Gen Kindle Fire HD for Christmas because they used mine so much that I wanted it back. We love them. I read on my phone for so long that it was time to move up in the eReader world. LOL!
I think if all you are doing is reading, then the Paperwhite would be a good option for you. A co-worker has one and she loves it.

I adore my Paperwhite. We are a Kindle house -- 2 paperwhites, 2 keyboard Kindles, 3 Kindle Fires. My kids prefer reading on the Paperwhite/Keyboard Kindles, and use their Fires for games, videos, Facebook, etc. I just don't need a tablet. I've got an iPhone if I need something small and I don't play games (well, one) so the phone and Paperwhite make me quite happy. I cannot say enough how much I love my Paperwhite.

I love using my Kindle Fire HDX to stream movies, check the internet, and do other stuff. I have the old Kindle Touch that I use for reading, but with the old technology I have to use a light in the evening, so I have wishlisted the Paperwhite because it has so many good reviews. But right now I can't justify spending the extra on the Paperwhite so I'm waiting for it to be reduced before I get it. I did read on some tech blog that there should be a new version of the Paperwhite coming out sometime this year, I'm hoping that is when the old one will be reduced!

Amazon usually comes out with their new Kindles in the fall. IIRC, the current models were introduced in Nov.
