Family Tree

'And I don't know where I'm going
But I do know who I'll be
These memories and names, like leaves, all hang on us

We're so much more than blood, we're more than names
We're bound by bonds that only God sustains
But this time of year we all gather here
And I always know I'm home

There are voices now where silence was
The subtle signs of growing up
Where one is born, another leaves
Branches on the family tree'

For sure it's being with family. Taking time to slow down and just be together.

(and my second and third would be seeing my kids joy opening presents, and singing silent night on Christmas Eve at church)

Brian smiling SOOOO big and surprised with everything. And not just because "hey, kid, here, another gift", but because I know he would smile in the same way no matter how many gifts we give him, kwim? The surprise part, like "OMG. all that... for ME?" like he is really surprised he deserves so much (and more). ♥

The magic that the season brings. Which in turn brings more family togetherness, more joy from my kids, and more memories created. It's such a magical time!

For me, it's the magic of it all...the lights, the music, the happiness it brings, the excitement, the joy....all of it.

You wanna come over and wrap all of mine? I haven't even started...like at all. All of our gifts are still hiding in my closet.

This year is the first year I haven't despised wrapping! I did most of my shopping online this year and so when package was delivered i'd just wrap it up. OMGoodness it saved my sanity! I loved having the boxes already there so I didn't have to scrounge around the house trying to find something to fit the gift in.. haha.

my favourite is playing war I think. I posted about it the other day on facebook but basically we all buy cheap stuff from the dollar store, wrap it all up and then play war, whoever wins a hand gets to pick a present until they're all gone. So much fun. I also love that my dad seems to love going and buy my sister and I drinks... hahaha. He doesn't drink at all so I think he lives vicariously through us.

It's the presents for me too! We don't buy the kids much..they aren't wanting for anything...but presents are a big deal here. you get presents on your birthday and christmas..maybe one other time throughout the year, but not often. It's a big deal and they are sooooooo excited!!! I love making them happy in that way!

The decorations! I love all the twinkling lights and holiday decor. It makes everything feel so festive especially since this time of the year can be kind of blah and cold. I even think I like the days leading up to Christmas more than Christmas Day itself, haha.

I don't know if you'd call it one thing... but the general festive and relaxed vibe around that time of year - for us its summer, we're on our big summer school/work break and winding down for the year, and its also my birthday just before Christmas!!

My son's excitement of the Christmas day and being with my family. Though this year it's a bit sad... We are just the three of us on a normal Sunday. No family visit like the year before

My favorite part is being able to "relive" Christmas through the eyes of my child... it has changed my perspective of the holiday...

Christmas eve. I live for Christmas eve - because it's my whole crazy loud laughing family, it's chaos and it's comfort and if I had to give up EVERYTHING else about Christmas, I would if it meant I could have this.

I hate present-wrapping, but I love watching my kids rip the wrapping off so I do it anyway. I love Christmas trees, all lighted up. I get up earlier or stay up later so I can enjoy the lighted tree by myself in the dark.

Of course family but honestly I have a very small family and we get together frequently throughout the year so we don't need Christmas to bring us together. My favorite part is the tree - cutting it down, decorating, and then sitting with the lights on and relaxing.

Hi Everyone, First time posting on the forum....

What I love is looking forward to all the ladies in my family getting together to make cookies. (happening here tomorrow) You bring a batch of cookie dough all made up and we all help put that cookie together and bake them, at the end they are all split up to bring your arrangement home. It is a day spent in the kitchen wearing our pj's, laughing, hearing the Christmas music in the background..... I'm a mom that my daughters are grown and out of the house, its a treasure of quality time.

for this year though the sad part is one of my daughters moved too far away and won't be here. Glad she made it home for Thanksgiving though.

I can't choose between our big family dinner and hearing/watching my kids and husband playing/singing in their different choirs and orchestras... I love the Christmas concerts. So I love both things MOST ...

The break in routine and having my daughters home from school to just relax.

Family was the first thing that popped into my head, but over the years the gatherings have gotten smaller and smaller and much more quiet. The holidays bring to mind who isn't with us any more.

I love it all, but if I have to pick just one think it will have to be the family traditions. We always go as a family to get a tree, then we always watch the same silly show on Dec 23rd, and always watch the Christmas shows that has been running since before I was born and I have always watched. Even when I started working and had to work on Dec 24th (our Christmas celebration) I had to buy them on dvd so I could watch them on the right day. And baking with my mother and my children.

And a very close second is the gifts, giving gifts that are well thought through and perfect for the recepient is so much fun. And wrapping them just so.

Oh and the Christmas ornaments, I just love the memories of each of them. The yearly picture ornaments, the old ones that are in a box with a post card from my grandmother who died a few years back (only read the card when decorating the tree and putting it all back together) and it has nothing Christmas about it, just have always lived in the box.

The lights....on the tree, our house, the decorative lights in the downtown area and all the decorated homes we pass when out driving. It's so festive and pretty. It puts me in a really good mood

Time with family - both immediate and extended. I love seeing the joy on my children's faces and I love catching up with those we don't see that often.

ahhhhh... i used to love gift wrapping [I used to go all out & make all of my own artsy wrapping paper, gift tags & hand curled ribbons and bows] but anymore it just feels like another chore to me

for me it's Christmas morning... the boys are always soooo beyond excited and watching their delight and joy build throughout the morning is magical. i love that they're truly grateful for everything they receive and that they spend as much giving thank you hugs and kisses as they do unwrapping presents.

The magic of the season through my son's eyes. He gets so excited and has so much fun. I also love seeing how people like the gifts I give them.
