Default NSR - Miracle Whip Or Mayonnaise?

Growing up I always preferred Miracle Whip to Mayonnaise, but since my mother liked Mayonnaise better we were a Mayonnaise house. First thing I did once I was on my own was to start buying Miracle Whip. Kinda weird to say, but it made me feel very grown up and on my own to buy what I liked. Since my mother moved in with me, she complains all the time about the Miracle Whip and while I try to remember to buy Mayonnaise for her, this is a Miracle Whip Light House! Some people say they can't tell the difference which I think is crazy. So, can you tell the difference and if so which do you prefer? And as a side question, what is the one thing little thing you buy at the grocery store that makes you feel like a grown up in charge of their own home?

I like both..depends on the meat for me

my favorite sandwich is leftover thanksgiving turkey with miracle whip on white bread (I usually eat wheat or whole grain bread)

I do love the kraft mayo though with everything else. I'll eat miracle whip on a regular sandwich too every once in awhile. I can tell the difference big time. I used to HATE mayo except on hamburgers but the last couple of years I've started eating it again and that one brand has grown on me.

I can absolutely tell the difference! I don't use either one all that often, and each has its own job. Mayo for egg and/or chicken salads, Miracle Whip for tuna salad. Andrew likes garlic/herb mayo on sandwiches. The kids don't like either one for any reason.

Ditto! When I met my DH his family was the Miracle Whip kind . Somehow I managed to overlook that flaw!

Well, I think mayo/Miracle Whip, and all of their relations are disgusting, so I'm passing on the first question

But as far as the second...I can't think of much...maybe because I was doing the grocery shopping for the family when I was in college. The biggest 'wow I'm the grown-up now' moment I've had in terms of grocery shopping was probably getting my Sam's Club card.

Something from the bakery or deli, where you have to actually talk to a human being!

Lol. Looks like I wouldn't have to fight off most of you ladies for the last bit of miracle whip in the house.

MAYO.

I grew up on Miracle Whip, but once getting married, my hubby refused to eat the stuff, and so I switched, and now can't stand the stuff. We rarely eat mayo any longer, so if we're going to need it, I just whip up a batch because it's so easy to make.

Miracle Whip all the way baby!

(But I do buy some Mayo for the occasional recipe that cannot be interchanged).

Mayo is so gross! I'm a Miracle Whip girl, but I don't use it all that often.

I have heard that between the two, mayo is healthier. Is this true?

This is me - I hardly ever use mayo so I just make my own - usually a garlic aioli. We aren't a sandwich family at all and I substitute plain greek yogurt for most salad type recipes that call for mayo.

Miracle Whip in general, because I prefer it's extra tang to plain mayo. I especially use it in chicken or egg salad & deviled eggs. I grew up in a Miracle Whip house so that is what I prefer.

We also have a small jar of mayo in the house for a couple specific recipes & DH likes it on burgers & some sandwiches

Mayo is a staple in the South. My mom buys bulk sizes at Sam's club lol I think at our grocery store there's one tiny little row of Miracle Whip. But the Mayo section is huge

Mayo. I grew up eating Miracle Whip, and one day had a sandwich with Mayo on it and couldn't figure out why it was so good. Once I did I switched to Mayo. Soooo good!

Hmmm what made me feel like an adult....probably buying juice by the carton. I'm not a huge milk drinker, so I like orange juice with calcium in the morning. My mom only ever bought the canned juice.

Mayo, my inlaws like Miracle Whip, they try to use it for things like tarder sauce, yuck!

I will eat it if there is no mayo.

Of course I can tell the difference. Don't understand people who say they can't. Miracle Whip is light and tangy. Mayonnaise is thick, goopy and rather revolting. I only use it for tuna salad or egg salad, but definitely Miracle Whip. I would keep a jar of mayonnaise in the fridge, though, if someone insisted on eating it.

I don't eat it often, but we buy the Mayo made with Olive Oil. Makes me feel better when I do eat it. LOL

I agree with the others - each has their own need for what ever recipe you are making... my mom (who is a big Miracle Whip person) looks at me odd (who is a big Mayo person) when I use my mayo in her Miracle Whip recipes... I just add vinegar and garlic to make it more tangy/dressing like...

My hips don't lie - I love mayo... especially with fries...

What makes me feel older when shopping? Buying meat... haha. Growing up we always got meat at the grocery store... now for my family, we go to an real butcher!

So, I guess I'm weird, cause I can't tell a difference. lol I do buy Miracle Whip though when I do buy it, but I have also bought Mayo before. Nothing I buy really makes me feel grown up cause I did the grocery shopping as my chore before I could even drive. My mom would drop me off at the grocery store with a list and a blank check and pick me back up again in an hour. I guess that made me feel grown up then.

I can't stomach Miracle Whip. And mayo is used very sparingly in this household. None of my kids like it. Hubs and I will use it for tuna salad or in a very thin spread for BLT's.

Mayo. I used to like miracle whip when I was a kid, I remember my grandma always had it at her house, but since growing up I can't stand the stuff.

If anything, it's mayo. Never miracle whip.

I only use mustard on a sandwich, but in tuna or egg salad, I'll use mayo.

Neither. I find them both gross. I'm not big on mustard either! I like my sandwiches dry!

So I probably win the weirdo award of the day. lol.

Totally the same for us.

As for a something that made me feel grown up..............it was a sad day when I had to buy my own hygiene items. LOL That is when I knew my mom was done taking care of me and I was a grown up! She always had that stuff stocked up and I never ran out. Not so much in the last 15 years or so. LOL

Oh yes, I forgot to answer the "grown up" question...

For me, pretty much buying anything made me feel in charge and all grown up. Not so much now, but definitely when I first moved out of the house. My mom really took care of us and I hardly had to shop at all when I lived at home. I never shopped for groceries and only rarely bought my own clothes. Yeah, I was super spoiled rotten.

Mayo/Miracle whip is the one fatty foods I actually don't like! So I'm going with neither, but if I were forced to choose, I'd go with mayo, which is what I used in recipes.

I forgot to answer your second question too...I think when I was old enough to buy wine coolers (never liked beer) I felt like a grown-up. I am not a big drinker though but I think most people when they turn 21 think they need to do it just once at least.

Also my parents never bought much junk food for us when I was a kid. No soda. We got kool-aid (generic flavor-aid actually) occasionally so when I was able to go grocery shopping being able to decide what I buy and buying my favorite snacks was a big deal. But then again I had been working since I was little to earn money. I rented my bike to my sister for a quarter each time she needed to use it. I cleaned my sister's baby bottles for five dollars every week. I babysat from 11 on. So whenever I had money I was able to buy what I want.

Both It depends on what ti is going on/in as to what I prefer. DH does not like Miracle Whip at ALL. He also doesn't like yellow mustard, it has to be brown mustard. He doesn't care for yellow American cheese either, prefers white. He's picky and strange. I grew up with both and both serve their purposes. On a bologna sandwich (and I rarely eat bologna these days) it HAS to be miracle whip... and mustard! Anyway, I got some sample packs of Miracle Whip and my kids stole them. Turns out they love it. DH isn't too pleased about that. LOL

Definitely Mayo.

And I don't know if it makes me feel grown-up, but my mom was a health-food nut when I was growing up so I loved it when I was out on my own and could splurge once in a while on something like Capn Crunch or a box of PopTarts that my mom would never have allowed!

Growing up my dads family used miracle whip so I loved going to grandma's for a tomato sandwhich on white bread with parmesean cheese and miracle whip. I thought it was the best sandwhich ever. In those days balonga was a big treat and gram would fry it up for warm sandwiches again with the miracle whip.

My grandma made me fried bologna sandwiches with miracle whip, too. Lol! I can't imagine making one for myself now, but it was sure a treat then.

I prefer Miracle Whip but sometimes get a taste for Mayo, too. Right now I have both in my refrigerator lol. My mom complains, however, if I make anything with real mayo. She says it's gross. I think it's funny she says this though since most fast food restaurants, etc. use Mayo and not Miracle whip and she doesn't think they are gross. Lol, to each his own!

I do not use either on sandwiches/hamburgers, etc. I use Miracle Whip in tuna fish with diced sweet pickles (and eat with crackers) ... I use Mayo in dips that call for mayo specifically. That is all.
