Default Need help from you talented girls - how to decrease photo size without losing quality

It seems that I came across a free program that did this online, but I'm sure there are other ways too - I need to resize some large photos down to about an inch. Any advice? The photos look horrible when I just resize and print (oh, yeah - I need to print them too!).

Wish I knew, I just figured you could resize down in your photo editing software.
