Default yay! another christmas thread... this time Books!

Anyone do the daily christmas book with their kids? I tried it last year and kiddo (age 7) got sick of it after day 5...

Now, I know most of my problem is my kid - he really only wants to read non-fiction books... so just getting him to read fiction can be a battle.. and second, I feel all my books are the same - either it's on the nativity or it's on the night before christmas... i know, tis the season... So, I'm looking for suggestions for christmas books that have a different story... I would also love to find anything on the history of certain traditions, etc....

So hit me with yours (or your kid's) favorite Christmas Books...

Thanks!

My personal favorite is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. And you can't go wrong with the Grinch. And The Crippled Lamb can still make me tear up

Most popular children's book series have a Christmas book or two to choose from.

Since he likes non-fiction, how about a bio of St. Nicholas? There are quite a few for kids out on the market. And there are a LOT of books about Christmas Around the World (many with that name). You could also look at books discussing Hanukkah or Kwanzaa to introduce him to holidays that others are celebrating at the same time.

You should try the Father Christmas Letters by J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien wrote them for his children, and they are such fun stories about Santa and the North Polar Bear. He wrote one letter each year for quite a few years. So, while they are fictional stories . . . they are real letters that a really famous, amazing author wrote to his kids in real life.

Growing up, my mom always read us The Birds' Christmas Carol and A Child's Christmas in Wales. I love them.

Another one is The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens:

I'm not sure I could do 25 books for Christmas... my bookshelves are bursting!

We do love Christmas/Winter themed books, but I just load up on them from the library because for the rest of the year we don't really read holiday themed books. I want to keep our personal 'library' trimmed down to mostly everyday sort of books we like to read often with a few holiday ones scattered in there.

Couldn't you do non-Christmas themed books?? Or throw some in with the Christmas books?

We're going to try and do it this year, although, I'm not wrapping them. LOL!

We have a pretty good collection, the kids always get at least 1 new Christmas book every year. I keeps ours packed away with the Christmas decorations. So I can't tell you exactly what we have until next week.

We always read the Elf on the Shelf book when Skippy arrives, just as a reminder, and Sean reads the Night before Christmas on Christmas Eve.

I ordered these this year.

I'm really excited to read this one, Santa's Favorite Story, it's his take on Jesus' Birth I guess.

thanks for the book ideas! We did a "Christmas Around the World" for our homeschool time two years ago and I was going to expand on that this year... so maybe I will have incorporate books with that to help spark excitement...

Anyone read The Legend of the Candy Cane
http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Candy-C...=1416426222590

or

The Legend of the Christmas Stocking
http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Christm...stmas+stocking

We love The Legend of the Candy Cane! I haven't read the other one though...need to check that one out.
That reminds me of The Legend of the Christmas Tree.

How about The Legend of the Poinsettia by Tomie dePaola? You could tie that into Christmas Around the World.

The Real St. Nicholas: Tales of Generosity and Hope from around the World
The Spider's Gift
Legend of St. Nicholas

**This thread got me googling and Goodread-ing...now I want to spend money on more books...good thing there's a Scholastic Warehouse Sale coming up!

I did that one year... but I used books from my classroom and missed them there! Ha ha!

Some of my faves (not nonfiction tho):
The Crippled Lamb
Auntie Clause
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey

Some nonfiction books...
Gail Gibbons is an awesome kids' NF author. Here are some of her Christmas books:
Christmas Is...
Santa Who?

He may like this one... it tells how Santa & the elves prep for Christmas... deliver gifts, etc. (and is pretty long, so it may take 2-3 settings!)
How Santa Really Works

Here's a snowy nonfiction one:
Snowflake Bentley

Legends:
The Legend of the Poinsettia
The Night of Las Posadas
The Legend of Old Befana (I haven't read this one, but just ordered it!)

Just to name a few...

we have done the Christmas book countdown since my daughter (now 12.5) was 18 months old. I have TONS of Christmas books and buy new ones each year. This year I am going to go through the ones I have and pass some of the younger ones along to a cousin's child. I don't have specific titles off hand of the ones we have but I probably have 50 at this point, if not more.
