Default Downton....**********SPOILERS*************

WARNING! DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FINALE

I MEAN IT

YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO KNOW...JUST KEEP ON LIVING IN YOUR PRE-FINALE BUBBLE

LAST CHANCE...TURN BACK NOW!

Okay. Seriously? I mean...I was too busy being angry to be sad b/c that was just totally unnecessary. Totally.

I knew that Dan Stevens had decided not to come back..but honestly I thought they would just replace him with another actor..which would have been not so great but at least Matthew would be ALIVE. I mean good grief. He's totally integral to the entire story right??..he's supposed to inherit Downton and move it into the 20th century and all that jazz. Good grief. I'm still just so mad about it. Losing Sybil was tragic...but killing Matthew was just dumb dumb dumb.

I was so sad. Then I was pissed the **** off. My parents watch it also, but they wait until Monday nights since they watch Revenge. We were all over there and I watched it in my mom's room, when it was over I stormed into the living room and told my parents not to bother watching it because it'll just make them mad.

They have now killed off both of my favorite characters. They better be planning some seriously awesome shizz for next season to make up for this.

Is this available on Netflix (yes, I'm too lazy to check...lol)? I know so many people that watch it that I'm intrigued.

Darn Dan Stevens for not wanting to return. Hope they find Mary a partner soon...hehehe, maybe she and Sybil's husband will raise the two children together...NOT!
I'm not surprised though. They spent the whole episode talking about how indispensable Matthew was to Downton.

They seem to be setting up for a new generation with his son and Lady Sybil's daughter. So many of those great houses just didn't make it into the middle and end of the twentieth century, so there's a lot of opportunity for some interesting story telling there. And the two surviving sisters seem to have renewed their rivalry.

I guess we'll see what happens next. One thing is clear: they should have hired another permanent chauffeur after Branson married Lady Sybil!

Yep - I'm quite annoyed as well!! I didn't know he was leaving the show though - I don't get why he's leaving. Why start a show and then not see it through! Seems like bad practice if you're an actor in my book!! Ugh! Well, now I'm bummed, cuz I assumed he wasn't dead. I mean - there's no way they'd kill him! Grr. I never thought to google about the actor!

Anyone remember when shows had predictable stories and we loved them anyways, lol. Hate these out of nowhere story lines that are more like life. Guess what -- I watch TV to escape reality for a while, lol.

I haven't read any of this yet because I haven't had the chance to watch last night's episode yet. But, I just have to say that these seasons are WAY TOO SHORT!! I can't believe last night was the finale and we have to wait a whole freaking year for any more Downton. Totally lame.

And, I had heard that something big happened on the finale, so I'm bracing myself . . . .

First season is on Netflix. Not sure about the 2nd season (I think it's on DVD, but not streaming), because I watched it on PBS.org Third season is on PBS.org till 3/3.

I also feel that replacing would've been a better choice. Also, they haven't 'pronounced' him dead, so there is still hope? I know, wishful thinking!

These seasons are way too short, that's for sure! This is the ONLY show I watch in entire year, so when I found out that it was already over, I wasn't happy to begin with.

If you have an Amazon Prime subscription seasons 1 and 2 are on there, season 3 as well but that one is a rent only, not free yet. We got rid of Netflix a while ago so I don't know if season 2 is on there or not.

I wasn't surprised. I knew he was leaving but I'd hoped they would figure something else out for the storyline. Two new babies with dead parents under the same roof! Come on now...

Here is some more info on the show. Their actors don't sign for long contracts.

and you have to remember that Downton was originally only supposed to be a 6 part miniseries. So when they first started none of them really realized what a huge hit it would become. Still..you'd think actors would want to stay with a hit show..I mean isn't that what they aspire to? IDK lol

I haven't watched, but read the spoilers anyway. I had heard about Dan Stevens leaving, so I figured that is what happened that everyone was upset about.

I read the linked article and I'm drawing a blank - who's Rose?

She's the young cousin...the one who ran off in London with the married man last week. She's going to be a regular next season apparently.

Most of the actors on the show have been in tons of movies even I've seen (and we're not huge movie people). I can imagine that big movies pay better than a TV series, so I'm sure they want to move on if the opportunity presents itself.

I guess I'm in the minority in liking that they kill people off. lolol It seems more realistic to me almost.

I'm actually thinking Rose... LOL!

At the moment, though... I'm too pissed off to care. Stupid, stupid actors forcing stupid, stupid decisions.

I don't know. Think about it. Matthew left an heir and this actually makes Mary a powerful figure! She couldn't inherit the estate but this is pretty much the next best thing. Initially, she was quite upset she could not inherit it. Think there will be drama as a result? I do!

Dan Stevens and Julian Fellowes SUCK. that is all I have to say about that.

Nikki - Dan is on Broadway now, and in a couple of movies coming, so I'm sure he wanted to take advantage of what he was being offered now before being stuck in charicature of Downton Abbey and never work well later, but dang. it sucks. No one can be happy more than 3 episodes. Now I worry about what they'll do to Bates & Anna (my fav of the story)

I agree, they so suck!! I had an idea of what was coming thanks to FB and spoilers and such but it was still very sad to see it play out like that...especially just as they were FINALLY happy!

Mary & Matthew and Bates & Anna were my favorites on the show so one of my couples better get to freakin' live happily ever after!!!

I am super mad. I had it DVRd and just watched. I knew someone was going to die so I kept yelling at the tv when I saw it coming. My husband said "stop yelling. it's already done!". Anyways, I think they will put Branson and Rose together. I was glad they got rid of the maid hitting on him. I have watched all 3 seasons in the past month, so waiting until next January seems like forever.
Do they have a holiday episode for this season?

I finally watched it! I knew he was going to die because my mom texted me spoilers yesterday. I was so happy for him and Mary, and I really feel the story line of the show rested heavily on him. I'm not sure how they will come back next season without him. Hopefully it won't unravel. I sure loved Matthew, but I am loving Tom Branson even more. And I really hope they don't pair him with that annoying Rose!!!!

I think since Tom & Matthew were working together, he is the logical one to step up now and help run Downton Abbey. I really think he and Mary would be an interesting pair!

Here's what I think is going to happen:
Branson and Mary are going to be forced to run the estate together, they're going to clash, butt heads, and fight, and in the middle of one such fight they'll end up getting it on. They will carry on in such a way secretively for a while, then someone is going to find out, or Mary will end up pregnant.

Yes! Me, too. I was sad about Sybil. I'm MAD about Matthew.

It wasn't that I was attached to him... it was that he was one of the freakin' main characters of the show! The whole thing started when the Titanic crashed and he was called upon, you know?! It just makes no sense now... gaah.

But there is an heir, so Matthew isn't needed anymore (at least in as far as storyline goes). Branson can run the estate, Crawley is converted, Matthew is 'expendable' (which is why I hate Julian Fellowes right now).

I read an article yesterday, can't find it now, but Fellows was talking about a number of things to do with Matthew and then they shifted off into a conversation about the showing airing in the US months after it does in the UK and that really not working so well with the internet and spoilers etc and apparently they'd like to air it at the same time in both countries but PBS isn't sure they should because of the network programming they would be up against in September pulling away the audience. But apparently they are talking about it.

Maybe they should just put it on BBC America and solve that problem. Works for Dr Who.

That is so funny, Darcy!!!

We're just now finishing up Season 2 (on DVD) and have been waiting to start Season 3. My husband has been so good to watch it with me. But I couldn't resist reading this thread and finding out the spoilers. Now I'll just need to keep it from DH...wish me luck on that one!

I thought it was totally tasteless the way they came on right after the show and were like "Aww. So sad. Well, here--buy it on DVD!"

As long as episodes are available on Microsoft or iTunes, then that is fine with me. (That's how it works for Doctor Who. We usually end up watching Dr. Who the day after it broadcasts because we could no longer justify the huge expense of cable television when we were only watching a couple channels and many days never even turned our set on!)

However, I really do like that it is on PBS. For one thing, we love public television. Public television is much more accessible than BBCAmerica. Not everyone who has cable gets BBCAmerica, either because their cable company doesn't carry it, or because their cable company puts it on an expensive tier. I hope that PBS can work this out. I am pretty sure that Downton Abbey isn't even a BBC show, but an ITV show.

What happened is, she wanted to watch it with her friends (after watching first few episodes with me) and that didn't work out. So, now she has to catch up on it and doesn't have time for it! But, I can't wait to talk about it to her anymore!!!

They will carry on in such a way secretively for a while, then someone is going to find out, or Mary will end up pregnant.
Ooh - this would tempt me to watch it and not give up on the show all together, lol

Yeah, Downton is ITV...the BBC has Parade's End and Upstairs Downstairs, and it's funny to read the snobby comments from BBC actors about Downton.

Same here. Sybil's death stuck with me for days... but Matthew's death was just meh. I guess I'm in the minority when I say that I'm looking forward to the next season now.

I have ALWAYS really liked Branson, but I think Mary is too cold for him. Sybil was passionate. I can see him with the new girl. BESIDES, Mary was freaking about Edith wanting to be with a man who owned a magazine, she would never go for an-above-his-station chauffeur.

I'm the other way around - Sybil didn't bother me much at all, but Matthew got to me. I, too, am worried about another season because the whole gist of the story was finding a suitable heir for Downton and saving it. That's been done...now we're getting into soap opera LOL

Here's a good article about the show and why Fellowes wrote it the way he did, etc. (BTW, if you love British TV - this is a really great blog to follow)

I don't have BBC America. Dangit. I've been wondering about Upstairs Downstairs because I watched the first two seasons on Amazon and was wondering when the next one started.

It wasn't renewed:

But there is the original Upstairs, Downstairs from the 1970s on Netflix.
