Question Online backup??

I am wanting an EHD but had a horrible dream our house was in the path of a monster tornado and we lost everything! (tornado nightmares have stuck with me since childhood). Anyway, I think I'd feel better with everything backed up online somewhere since that would be immune to anything horrible that could happen to the house.

I saw Carbonite is having a special with 2 months free. Has anyone used them? Any suggestions? If it matters I have 150GB on my hard drive now, with a lot more photos to scan in.

We use Backblaze and love it. I've never used anyone else though so I can't compare.

backblaze here, too. Switched after Mozy went crazy and upped their prices so dramatically. I've loved Backblaze so far.

Yep, Backblaze for me, too. The initial backup will take FOREVER, but once you have that out of the way, it's great. And I check my backups, too, to make sure it's actually backing up what it says it is. I've heard horror stories of people thinking they were being backed up and it wasn't. So far, I've Backblaze has worked perfectly!

I have an EHD and online backup, and if I could only have 1 I'd definitely go with the online backup. In addition to still having access to the data if something happened to my home (or even just all of my computer equipment), my EHD backup can be a month or 2 out of date and my online backup is usually less than a day old. The one thing to keep in mind if you don't have an EHD copy as well is that some (all?) of the services charge a fee if you want them to burn your data to DVD and mail it to you. I know that with Mozy (and probably others) you can download it for free if you need to restore, but that may not be practical if you needed to restore all of it.

I use Mozy, but I pay by the year so I haven't been affected by the price hike yet. If they're still charging these rates when my year is up, I'll probably be switching to BackBlaze.

I use 3 EHD's instead of online backup. My DH isn't comfortable with online backup. I have 2 at home, and 1 at work (which I'm actually taking home tonight to backup, lol).

I have 2 EHDs and use BackBlaze. I used to have Carbonite, and was happy with them, but switched to BaclBlaze because they also back-up EHDs.

I have had to do a restore with BackBlaze as well when my laptop died, and it was super easy. They have a great option where they will sell you an EHD with your data on it, so you don't have to download everything.

We currently are using Mozy (locked in for a year before the price hick), but we are also trying out CrashPlan... Individual computers are backed up off site and then we are using our server as our on-site back up.

I was wondering how they work with EHDs, because I don't leave mine plugged in, I only plug it in when I want to do an EHD backup... does it work when you only hook it in once in a while? I know backblaze will delete files from your online backup after you delete it from your computer, so would it work with an EHD that only gets plugged in once a month?

They would delete the files after 30 days, so you would have to make sure to not go 30 days without plugging it in.

I plan on getting an EHD so I think I'm gonna check into Backblaze. Thanks for all the input! I live in fear of my pc dying-I've scanned so much onto it plus all the scrapping stuff I've bought lol.

I use Backblaze too. I also have it back up my EHD. I make sure to plug it in at least once a week to update the backup. I also have mine on continuous backup so if I have my EHD is plugged in, then it gets updated then too. I have had to do a complete restore when I changed my computers. It was easy and quick. I love their service and you can't beat the price. (I was with Mozy at one point but I left before they changed their prices. Their customer service totally sucked and I was not happy at all. )

Backblaze. And I have about 135GB and it backed up in about 12 days when I gave it full resources - didn't bog down my computer at all.

I loved that I just took a vacation and was able to grab any files from them while I was gone, instead of lugging along an EHD.

And yeah, I just got back from Joplin and after seeing that disaster first hand, I'm glad I've got online backup.

I got 1/3 of the way done on full throttle while El was at VBS and the guys played tennis. I watched The Office and left the pc alone. I <3 Fios!

I went digital in 2004 and have all of our photos since then on Snapfish.com. They are also on an EHD, as well as backed up onto DVDs.

I also have an EHD and just switched to Backblaze. I had Mozy before & had no problems whatsoever with them until they did away with unlimited storage and raised their prices. I have almost 750 GB to back up & Backblaze has been doing the initial backup for about 10 days now . . . fortunately, I knew ahead of time that it would take forever - LOL! (And it totally runs in the background and doesn't interfere with anything else I'm doing.)
