Default Check this out! Super cool find!

So, I posted this on fb, but I thought you guys might appreciate this, too.

We live in an old 1918 home (which I hate, but that's another post for another day). Today, we were having the upstairs bathroom walls/ceiling torn out (lath & plaster) so that we can insulate and drywall in there. Well, when they pulled down the ceiling, they found a ton of old magazines up in there.

Here's a photo of a couple of them:

On the left there is a Dec 1939 copy of Cosmopolitan. ON the right is a 1940 issue of PhotoPlay with Clark Gable on the cover. They're all gross and dirty (obviously), but I really want to read the Cosmo issue. Can you imagine how different the articles were from 73 years ago than they are today?

Just had to share cause I thought it was really cool!

I totally will, Jen! I'm super curious, too. I think I'll have to take them outside and read them on the front porch cause I don't want to get my house all gross with them. LOL

that is funny that they were in the ceiling... but I suppose during the depression...

That's definitely one of the things to love about old houses. One of our old houses had newspapers shoved in to the ceilings and walls as insulation. They were beyond readable for the most part when we pulled them out but it was still very cool to see them. I really miss having an 'old' house. This one was built in '42 and is the newest we've lived in. The last one we were in was built in 1890 but had been completely renovated so nothing fun was left.

WOW! That is super cool!! I would totally want to read them too. And if they are in any sort of condition, I bet they would absolutely be worth something.

Just WAY COOL, Libby! I wonder if you could sell them on eBay or something.

I honestly don't think they're worth much. I was looking on ebay, and there are several similar magazines on there. They go for anywhere from $10-20each, and they're in MUCH better condition than these. These are all torn, bent, and aged. They are still able to be read, but they aren't in good condition at all.

One thing I thought was really cool was that the Cosmo had a mailing label still on it. It was quite faded, but I could still make out our home address on it. Pretty wild!

Someone suggested that we should put a current issue of Cosmo up there before we close it back up. I thought that was a neat idea!

That would be a cool idea!! I think after you read the old one, if you're not going to keep it or sell it, put one from this month and the old one up there together! That would be a double treat for someone years from now - maybe sealed up in a clear baggie or something so the old one doesn't get any more damaged.

That is such a cool find - it'd be so neat to see what they wrote about in Cosmo that long ago

when we moved out here where I live now I was a kid and my parents had bought a wooded lot. We found a dump site on the lot where people must have dumped glass bottles. They were worth a pretty good amount of money. Most were at least 80 years old. The coolest one I thought was the coca-cola bottle. I am not sure how old it was but my mom took them all and washed them all. Then contacted an antiques dealer to find out what everything was worth. I think over the years she ended up selling most of them.

I think you should put the OLD one and a NEW one up in the ceiling! Maybe inside something to preserve them.

If you don't want to keep them, you might see if a local library system, museum, or historical society might want them.

pretty neat huh!?

the house i grew up in was built in the 1800's. my parents remodeled it slowly and were always finding things in the walls. we found old newspapers, medicine bottles (a doctor used to live there) some of those old fashioned ladies shoes with the buttons, bottles of wine, old books....lots of stuff. we actually donated the shoes and other things to the local history museum
