Default Holiday food

Tell me what you?re baking, making, enjoying this holiday season.

I love to try new recipes, but we?re starting to have more favorites than time (or room in our waistline to enjoy)!

I've done chocolate and caramel covered pretzels (they are already gone), the gingerbread house is done, my girls and I are doing cut out cookies this weekend, and I'm making a lasagna to take to the in-laws on Christmas. The new thing I want to try this year is star bread.

I love making poppycock (caramel popcorn with nuts), and nuts & Bolts. I've also made Double Chocolate peanut butter cup cookies, peanut butter squares, rocky road, triple layer bars (my fave) and shortbread.

For Christmas dinner I stick to pretty plain stuff - turkey, mashed potatoes, carrots, coleslaw, corn, stuffing, gravy ... and all the above sweets for dessert lol

That star bread looks amazing!!

We did a couple cookies on Sunday, but I decided to do the bulk of my cookies next Friday, to have them for Christmas, rather than eating them all month, LOL!

I'm planning to write my list and grocery list today.

Our Christmas baking consists of Muddy Buddy's, cut out sugar cookies and Peanut Butter Balls.

We like to keep Christmas Day meals simple. Usually finger foods- crackers, cheese spread, shrimp- simple foods that don't require a lot of time or effort. We are adding a hot cocoa bar this year- crushed and regular candycanes, mini chocolate chips, whipped topping, sprinkles, chocolate or caramel sauces, pirouette stick things, etc. So that should be fun!

We just decided today to do a charcuterie board with cinnamon rolls for dessert for our extended family dinner. It is just easy and everybody loves it. We usually do a big breakfast Christmas morning with scrambled eggs, bacon, monkey bread and hash browns.

I decided to do no baking this year. It's just been too much lately and I only want to do it if I enjoy it. I am cooking a lot though. First a cook off at work that I still have not decided on. Christmas Eve I am making soup and salad. Christmas day will be brunch and then we go out for sushi for supper. The weekend after my family is coming and we will do chili baked potato bar.

We have our extended family party tomorrow night and I'm making my usual cookie dough truffles which are always a hit

Plus Mac and cheese, an ahi tuna appetizer, and carmelized onion brie in puff pastry

Christmas Eve we are doing a Spanish themed dinner with some extended family and I am making Patatas Bravas and probably something else. Not sure yet.

Christmas morning we have a big breakfast at home with cinnamon rolls, bacon, sausage and biscuit casserole, eggs benedict casserole and fresh fruits. I also do a mimosa bar.

I have to work Christmas night so dinner will be simple chicken and stuffing in the crock pot with potatoes, gravy and some veggie.

I had a baking day with a friend a couple of weeks ago and we made chocolate crinkles, lemon crinkles, Andes chocolate mint cookies, ginger molasses cookies, snickerdoodles, and cherry-almond shortbread. The lemon crinkles were a new recipe and they were a hit!

And then I tried what was touted as an all-time favourite recipe on the Martha Stewart site: Chewy Chocolate Gingerbread Cookies. They were really good but I went too dark with the chocolate - I'm going to try them again with sweeter chocolate!
