Default RQotD:Do you consider yourself an artist?

Thank you all for humoring me with my random questions. I really like the chance to get to know our little family here better.

So, today's question of the day:

Do you consider yourself an artist?

Even as a photographer and scrapbooker, I still have a hard time thinking myself as "an artist." I love the creative outlet, but somehow artist has different connotations to me . . .

How about you?

I'm jumping right into the fire here... and I'm new @ SSD... but I consider myself an artist... It took me a long time to appreciate this 'state' but I believe what I do (specially as a photographer) will last long after I'm gone... and it's beauty (most of the time) can be consider as ART.

You bguys should think of yourselves as ARTISTS too

no matter how creative. no matter how crafty. no matter how many rooms i design, etc...i will never feel like an artist. an artist, in my opinion, is someone with superior natural born artistic abilities. immense painting/drawing skills, etc, singing skills, instrument playing skills (however, i can play a little gui-TAR. lol).

this is a very interest RQotD. me likey, dawn.

i always have, lol. Art was my favorite class all through school; i've always been very creative. i used to draw all the time. you would always find me sitting quietly and just drawing whatever. my friends and teacher always said i was really good but i've always been pretty modest, lol. i haven't drawn in years, lol. i wonder if thats a talent you lose? now its mostly just scrapping and crafts of all sorts. but i like to consider myself an artist!

I consider myself the least artistic in my family. My brother ... he is a carpenter and can design the most amazing furniture, with wood/metal by hand - to die for! My two little sisters are both amazing.. The older of the two loves to paint nature scenes, and takes amazing photographs as well. And my baby sister ... she is the most creative of the bunch ... fashion design, seamstress, sketches, painting, scuplture, knitting, crochet ... you name it, she can do it.
Me? I just go with what looks good and feels good to me. I don't do it to please others.

Yes. Not everyone can do what I do, and that makes my stuff one of a kind. And I think that makes me an artist.

I think of myself as crafty. I mean, I can draw pretty well. But, I don't feel like an artist or even artistic for that matter. My DH says I am, but I don't feel it.

Have you seen my pages? ROTFLMAO Um. No. Just a scrapper -- but I am learning from looking at others' pages and doing the challenges here.

My girlfriend likes to tell me what I do is an art...but I think I agree with some of the other posters...I feel I am creative, but not artistic! I've always done something crafty...but have never had a natural gift at it.

Nope. My sister is an artist so I've seen firsthand what it involves. She has a creative eye and mind that I could never have. I would never put myself in the same league as her, no matter what the medium. I consider myself more on the crafty side, not the artsy side.

I said yes because I design things outside of scrapping. I make custom jewelry and I do lots of print work, that requires designing (logos, magazine ads, brochures, etc). I won't say I'm the best artist, but I think I'm one on some level.

I like the whole, creative, but not artistic type statement. When I think of artistic I think of drawing and painting. That, I have NO talent in. I am quite pleased with the pages I make and I know my family loves them. I can play any instrument with the best of them, but give me a pencil and paper and ask me to draw a stick figure....and you'll be asking what it is!

Creative...definitely. Artist...I see a painter. LOL

However...by definition...I guess so.

No way!!! I am only as good as the person I am scrap lifting or the template I am using. When I work on my own it turns out marginal at best.

But I am sure there are tons of "artists" here who think they are not!!!

Nope, I don't consider myself an artist.

Our fab designers definitely are, but I'm just a plain ol' scrapper.

I chose no but only because I still have so much to learn when it comes to scrapbooking and photography. I have always been creative though and can do just about any craft there is and alternate between all kinds of crafts so in a way I guess I am artistic but I would not say I am an artist.

my father's side of the family are mostly artistic. i grew up drawing stuff on anything i could find, paper, walls, cabinets (LOL), etc.
i actually have a degree in Fine Arts, but i don't use it in my work (i have to take care of accounting). i have always loved creating things with my hands
my photography skills suck, though

count me in with the "crafty" people LOL ! in addition to scrapping, i also make beaded jewelry ... but i can't draw, paint, etc to save my booty! i have several close family member who are really talented artists (by my definition - LOL) - they can paint, etc really well ... but they are NOT crafty! they don't have the patience, they aren't very meticulous, don't like to 'learn' things (e.g., photoshop) ... etc ... anytime they try to do something i do it comes out a royal mess! hahaha ...

Being an "artist" is never soething I have strived to become, so I don't feel like I am suffering from low self esteem or anything because I don't see myself as an artist. And I think that a lot of the folks who DO see them selves as artists are the people that *I* see as artists as well.

yes! Definitely true that most of the people that say they are artists are ones that I would think of artists as well

I said artist--I think of each page I do is art, just as I think designers who make scrap product are artists too. Each page of mine is a tiny piece of me

A lot of my views of what artists and art is comes from reading this book: The Artist' Way by Julia Cameron
