Default Wish Me Luck...

I need to be accountable to someone right now, so you guys are it, lol.

A year ago, I gave up drinking pop - specifically coke. I had major migraines for 2 weeks, it sucked SOOO bad, but afterwards I felt awesome. I drank water, and I dropped weight really fast without all those extra calories and loads of sugar.

But...I got sucked back in. At first it was just a coke here or there in restaurants...then it became a few more, and a few more, and now I'm back where I started. Drinking 6+ cans a day.

The realistic part of me doesn't want to do this again - the withdrawals and horrible pain...BUT I know that I won't do it if I say I'll cut back gradually - it's gotta be all or nothing.

So...wish me luck! It's gonna suck, big time...but I've gotta do it!!

I would never cut back from 6 to nothing like that. 2 weeks of migraines is SO not worth it. I'm with K, cut it in half for a few days, then in half again, etc etc. Get down to 1 can a day and then give it up.

I cut back from about 6+ Mt Dews a day to basically nothing (I have half of one yesterday and the day before)... so I feel your pain. For real. So GOOD LUCK! You can do it!

Good luck! Would it help to take the OTC migraine medicines that have caffeine in them?

I'd like to get the dependency of caffeine out of my system completely, that's what I'm going for. Part of me wants to do this gradually but I have like NO willpower, lol...I know that if I have a couple, a couple more will slip in...

Bree, I'm on Day 1 of no diet pepsi, it's going ok so far, I'm only at 2:10 pm. I have to go skating for 4 hours, so that'll distract me.

Good luck, I don't know if I can do it, hell, I don't know if I WANT to, but I think it's best!

Hopefully you have lots of good pain meds for your head. I know I'll need some! LOL

You can do it!! You will feel sooo much better if you do.
I would cut in half for a while if you could. I drink one coke a day.. and if I don't have it, I feel sick and have bad headaches too. So I've been trying just 4-5 a week. Hopefully I can get down to less than that soon!
Do you have any other drinks you like that you could replace the habit with? Caffine free ones?

I was in the same boat as you a few weeks ago. (((Hug))) Is it the caffeine that you are trying to cut back on or the calories? Because I have been drinking Cherry Coke Zero, which I think tastes pretty good (not as good as coke) and helps with the caffeine headaches.

Bit of both Diana...trying to give up the addiction to caffeine as much as drinking the actual pop. But I may start drinking coffee (though I drink it with a load of International Delights creamer, so really it's probably got the same amount of calories as a coke, lmao).

Good Luck Bree!

Diet Cherry Pepsi is my only real vice I have left. Not sure I can give it up. I quit smoking and drinking(I'll have maybe 3 drink a year) so I need something! I too have tried to quit before and the withdraws were killer. I couldn't take it and had to pop the top.

You can do it! And since you haven't been drinking it for so long like last time, the withdrawals may not be so bad! You can do it!!!!

Good luck with it Bree, I know its horribly hard. I've tried so many times. Right now I'm at the longest time ever - I stopped right after Christmas. I have had a few of DH's, which I really don't like so its not that much temptation. I really feel so much better not drinking any, maybe you can focus on that part?

I stopped drinking sodas and didnt have the headaches this time around. I made sure to take a tylenol at the first sign of a headache though. I have maybe one pepsi every few weeks. Of course I do drink alot of iced tea so it isnt really giving up caffine LOL Good luck though. You could take caffine pills which are basically the equivalent of a cup of coffee and alot easier to stop IMO then sodas.

I don't drink soda at all (I've just never liked the taste....I'm a water drinker), but I do have two mugs of coffee every morning. I never considered giving it up, but I imagine it would be similar to what you have to go through. Seriously, I think I'd rather die than give it up...It is what I get out of bed for! kwim? Definitely try to cut back...even to just one a day.

Surprisingly I'm at almost 36 hours without it and I don't feel like absolute crap, lol. Last time I was having the migraines after just a few hours, but so far I haven't had anything. I was achey yesterday but I think that had to do with me being at the beginning of a cold and I was playing darts on Sunday, so my arm and back were hurting.

I'm trying to quit drinking pop too, but my first step is going from regular to diet. In the past week I've only had regular pop once, when my DH brought home some from Subway. I only have 1-2 cans of diet pop a day and eventually I'll not have any!

Good luck quitting Bree!

Woot! You can do it Bree!! Just use a bit of that stubborn-ness you have in there, lol!

And remember how much better you felt and all that weight you lost for Disneyland!!! All from not drinking pop!!

PS - I'm doing the same thing, and restarting Clean Eating... so hopefully you and me will be skinny minnies by summer !

First of all, I love seeing people use the word "pop". That's what we called it in Buffalo, and since I moved to Florida, when I say pop they look at me funny and say "do you mean soda?" But I digress... I give you soooo much credit for doing this! I want to give up chocolate and coffee, but I just can't seem to find the willpower. I even recently scrapped about the time I tried to give up coffee and the migranes.. ouch. Big hugs to you! You should be so proud of yourself! Maybe treat yourself to something you've been wanting at the end of the week!

Oooo that's a tough one to give up for sure!! You can do it! I rarely have pop anymore but find that if I have just one, even though it's diet, I find myself craving another one!!

Hang tough!!!

lol! as I was reading through this thread I kept thinking it sounded so weird to hear it called "pop" or "soda" in the south all soft drinks are "cokes" lol..it's not what kind of "pop" do you want ...it's what kind of "coke" do you want? lol

Well that's just WEIRD Nikki, lol! Up here coke is coca-cola (and if you ask for a "coke" and the place serves pepsi, they always ask "is pepsi OK?"), "pop" is everything else.

Yes, I call everything "Coke" too. I too have considered giving up my diet sodas. First of all I'm cutting back. I am drinking more tea and water. I'm more concerned about how hard it can be on your kidneys, etc. than the caffiene. There's always Coke Zero if you are cutting back on sugar and caffeine. Good luck!!

awww, Bree. I remember last year when you did that and I remember your migraines. I would just cut back rather than go cold turkey. Three cans a day for a week. And then 1 can for a week. And then zero. You might still get headaches, but weaning yourself slowly might keep you from getting migraines.
Good luck hon! You can DO it!!

I caved and had one last night, but not because I had a headache, I just missed tasting it! But for me, that is HUGE, going from 6+ a day, to only 1 in 2 days. I'm doing ok today again, hopefully I can keep it up!
