Default Any tips on giving an infant liquid medicine?

in his food/bottle is a no go, he doesn't do either yet.
in his cheek/back of his throat just comes back out or drowns him...

I'm at a loss...is there a trick?

IDK. We've never had too bad a time with it. The only thing I would suggest is just to drop a tiny bit at a time into the cheek instead of trying to do the whole amount at once. Is it a bad taste issue?

Well, if you have extra patience and time (I know) do like *ahem* "a friend" *ahem* did when her now almost 6yo DD was a baby: Dip your finger into it, then let your baby suck it off your finger.
That's why everyday should be named "mother's day", right?

put just a tad bit at a time and if it tastes bad give it to him with some formula/expressed milk (if you are breastfeeding) Or even a bit of diluted apple juice if he is old enough for that.

we've been doing reflux medicine since week 2... we just do a little at a time from the syringe and in the back of his cheek... and lay him back as much as possible but not totally flat on his back.

No reflux here, but that's how I used to do it. Use one of those syringes and just do a bit at a time in the back of his cheek.

Is he ok?

when mine were little and were only nursing, we had a small syringe that we used. Put it in a ways into the mouth and released only a bit at a time.

This will probably sound really mean, but it works every time and we did it all the time!

Get a syringe, put it on the side of his cheek, then blow in his face. A baby's natural response to blowing in the face is to swallow. Good luck!

This. This is what worked for Allie when she was a baby. We had to blow in her face and it would make her close her mouth and swallow.

this will also work. I used it on my kids as well and just recently had to use it on our puppy to get her to swallow a pill LOL

Tip from our pediatrician when we had the same problem... She said to squirt the liquid far back but to the side, then immediately stroke your finger a few times under their chin and down the neck a bit. That triggers the swallowing reflex, but you have to be quick about it. Worked like a charm for us.

I think also, if you rub underneath their chin it causes them to swallow. I have always just given my little guy a little at a time in his cheek and kind of layed him back a little and he has swallowed it. He has been on about 10 different meds and I haven't had any problems.

Also, I'm not sure what kind of med he is on, but sometimes getting them flavored helps. We have been on liquid zantac since Eli was 2 weeks and I get it flavored grape. Seems to cut the intense flavor it has otherwise.

yes this. Drew was on 2 reflux meds when he was an infant and we did this all the time until I could put it in his bottle.

What I did was to take the dropper and put it as far back in their mouths as possible and let the medicine go and then blow in their face. Blowing in the face causes them to swallow. I know it sounds mean, but it works like a charm.

I haven't heard of the blowing in the face trick but I will keep it in mind.
Kennedy will take medicine in the back of the cheek just a little at a time with no problem.

What Kristin said is what I remember what my doctor said, too... I didn't have that problem, my kiddo LOVES the taste of medicine... he gets that from his daddy who thinks cough drops are candy.

hmm...i've tried most of the stuff already posted but none of them worked on my last baby (100% BF) at all. then I got to thinking...all he knows is hot milk (98.6 degrees is pretty hot to me ) so I always warmed up his meds and it worked like a charm!!! I could drip it in a little at a time!!!

You coulkd try a flexible tipped syringe and do it while he nurses....just slip it in and squeeze a little in at a time!!!

Ohhhh, good luck with that. We have always been fortunate (I guess) that our boys LOVE taking medicine. I am not sure if that's a good thing or not but they have always taken it with no problems....in fact, our 3 year old has been taking Dramamine pills with no problem for the past year!!!

I must have a strange child because he takes any medicine I give him with ease. Good luck!
