LOL this is too funny. I have had trouble with this my whole life. Including people that would say it wrong just to annoy me. Can't wait to see how the poll turns up.

I say Barr-ay? I figure it has to be french so I try to say it like I "think" it would be in french. I can't speak french and never studies, btw. LOL

I always say it like BEAR-et.

I don't know why. I went to school with a Barrette and I *think* that's how they said it.

I clicked like the hair clip. But i realized if Jenn wanted to "fancify" her name it could totally be "bearey-tey" LOL.

(and my name gets mispronounced a lot...accent is on the third syllable, but people usually accent it on the second)

I am on the Bear-it team. Though the thought of the "french" sounding name like Tara said sounds pretty awesome! LOL

In theory, you are all right! I am French, so you could say my name all fancy french like "Gennifair Bear-ette" BUT I did not grow up in a french part of Canada, and our family just pronounces it Barrette like the clips you put in your hair.

HAHA I was so wrong! Seriously, it never even occurred to me that it could be any other way. Jenn, I'm sorry, but you'll have to be "Bear-it" in my head. (This coming from the girl who's last name is mispronounced regularly as was my previous last name of Weifenbach). LOL

This conversation came up a bit ago, so I knew the correct way to pronounce it, but for years I had been saying it wrong. I'll still say in incorrectly in my head...and then make myself say it the correct way several times.

Yay - I was right! Whew! I hate mispronouncing names (personal pet peeve) and I have the hardest time fixing a name (or even a word - I used to say tapestry wrong for the longest time, lol)

I think Barrette in my head like Traci does: Bahr-ette, kind of like in a Boston/New England accent, cuz that's where I'm originally from. With the accent on the first syllable, not the second like in barette, a hair clip.

Edited to add: and of course, I didn't finish reading ahead!

Can we have a poll now on Libby's last name pronunciation?

Hmmm, I think I'm with Libby. Do you feel okay about us calling you Jenn Bear-et in our heads?

And Libby, how DO you say Pritchett? I say it PRIH-chet. Is that right?

I'm other, and I can see now I was wrong. I don't know why, but I've always pronounced it "buhet-tee" in my head. Maybe it just flowed better, LOL. I don't know if I can change after so long, but I suppose no one but me will ever know since I don't think I've ever said her name out loud.

haha, this discussion cracks me up.

except, not being from North America, I have no clue how those hair clips you're all talking about are pronounced, lol! So, even after all the debate, I'm still clueless, lol!

Hehe - I'm late to the party but in my head I've always said it like the hair clip.

I have good friend whose last name is prounounced "bear-it" and she spells it Barrett - no E on the end, so the hair clip pronunciation seemed natural to me.

Now, if she were from Quebec as opposed to Ontario, then I might have pronounced the French way

This! I never even thought to pronounce it any other way than like the hair clip. And I also have a friend who has the last name Barret and pronounces it "bear-it" and I always figured the extra T and the E at the end of Jenn's name made the pronunciation different.
