Default Broke myself pretty good

Thought I'd post a little thread for those of you that aren't FB friends with me and don't know what I did to myself last weekend.

Saturday morning I fell off my front porch (the welcome mat slipped right out from underneath me!) and I fell HARD. I was so glad DH was home. Off to the ER we went. Was told that I fractured and chipped my tibia (shin bone) way down low by my ankle. Needed to follow up with an orthopedic specialist on Monday.

The rest of the day Saturday up until the ortho appt. Mon. were excrutiatingly painful days. I had pain meds but they weren't working all that great. So ortho appt. was very enlightening. After new Xay of my whole leg, I go a new diagnoses. I had actually twisted my ankle out of socket, snapped the tendon holding the joint together and my ankle had been breaking more and more over the course of the weekend. I had also broke my tibia in half about halfway between my ankle and knee. Ohhhhhhh! THAT'S what all that pain was!

I had surgery the very next day to repair my ankle. Still in a bit of pain but I'm ready to start healing and get back to normal!

That sounds terrible! Did the incomplete DX of the ER lead to additional injury? If so, that is pretty egregious! I hope you heal quickly! {hugs}

The ortho said he doesn't blame the ER doc at all, because it wasn't as severe that first hour after I fell. I guess I'll believe him

My DH is having to cook, clean, get up in the night with DD...he says he finally knows what it's like to be me. Mwahahaha!!

Goodness, that's awful Kate! I read about your fall and it is so crazy how much damage that did, but I'm so glad you are now on the mend. They sure got you in to surgery quickly, so at least you didn't have to suffer in waiting to long. Hope you get some scrapping time during recovery!

Oh wow! I can't even imagine the pain you must have been in! You poor thing! I'm glad you are on the mend now and I hope that recovery is as easy as possible for you. Sorry about the incorrect ER diagnosis. I'm glad it wasn't negligence as much as the condition continuing to worsen.

That sounds awful! I'm so glad you're on the mend now. (And does it make me a bad person that I'm glad your DH gets stuck being you and seeing what it's really like for a few days? I've always wished mine would be forced into it for a while, but without the major injury to me.)

It's the only good thing that's come out of this, Rachel! It really is kinda great that he gets to know what it's really like.

Oh no Kate!! I hope you have a speedy recovery!

I fell down our deck stairs this week - right from the very top. Puppy in one arm went flying, I landed pretty hard on it and I think Sydney took my foot to her head (she was putting on her skates on the bottom step). I was pretty sure I broke my arm, but mighta just bruised it up pretty good. I'm such a klutz!

Leah, I was completely convinced I just sprained my ankle...so glad I went to have it checked out. Maybe you should have your arm checked out.

Kate I hope you have a speedy recovery. I work in an orthopaedic office and we see this sort of thing quite a bit. Many times, I don't think the ER physicians always know specifically what to look for especially based on specific mechanisms of injury. I'm glad you got it checked out and taken care of though.

Oh, goodness, Kate, you poor thing!

Its really hard for the ER docs to see the full injury right afterwords. It happened to me and to my son. With him, he kept holding his leg at the knee and when they took an xay they took the top of his leg and saw nothing, but put it in a removable cast and made an appointment. When we went to that one, they discovered he actually broke it right above his ankle, but being only 3, he didn't really understand. With me, the ER just told me I had a really bad sprain in my ankle. The first doctor just went with that, then when I still wasn't able to put any weight on it 4 weeks later, just told me to walk on it anyway. I got a new doctor who discovered not only was it one of the worst sprains he had seen without tearing like you actually did do, but I had also broken the ankle, sprained my foot in 2 spots and pulled the calf muscle and it made total sense not to be able to put any weight on it yet. Anyway, hope you feel better soon!

Oh my gosh! I was cringing just hearing your description (and some of it I didn't know what it was!) ... I'm glad you received a second diagnosis to find it all! So are you in a cast ... or wrapped up ... can you walk at all? Wow. Take care! I hope it isn't too painful for you right now ...

I'm in a temporary cast for 2 weeks for the swelling to go down. It's hard fiberglass on one side (the underside), and wrapped all the way around to my knee with ace bandages. In two weeks (the 12th), I'll be getting a full plaster cast. This half cast is already heavy enough...I just can't wait for the full cast

I wonder if insurance would help pay for a wheelchair rental? I honestly don't know how anyone can walk (even with crutches) with a cast. I'm so clutsy, I know I would fall again. Or maybe your hubby could go to an estate sale or garage sale and pick you up a used wheelchair. Even if you just use it when you are around the house to help take some of the weight off, it would help. Hope the time goes by faster than you anticipate, and you're all mended and good as new!

Thanks everyone. I never want to wish my life away, but let's just say I'm looking forward to the next six weeks or so to be done and over with.

OMG that sounds so horrible! I can't believe that the ER couldn't see more of your injury to get you the surgery you needed then and made you suffer all weekend. So glad the Orthopedist was able to see what was really going on and get you all fixed up. Hope you feel up quick!

I went to work for 3.5 hours yesterday and I don't think I've ever been so exhausted...and i have an office job. It got really uncomfortable really fast. A lot of squirming around. And the trip to the bathroom on crutches nearly killed me...it was so far away! But it was nice to get out of the house.
