Default meta data on photos

My father-in-law is asking how he can save the information on a digital photo of who is in the photo like he used to by writing the information on the back of the photo.

Is there away to save this information in meta data without having to purchase software to do it? I tried to add a comment to the "get info"... but when I sent the photo to my hubby as a test, that information wasn't there... Can be either PC or MAC - probably need more for PC since that is what Father in law uses...

thanks!

I tried this out in Windows Explorer and it seems to work.

I added all sorts of information in the -> properties ->details, e.g. title, comments etc. I then sent the photo to myself by email and all the info was still there in the sent file.

I had a look at the file in Bridge and there only the title was in the meta data, not the comments etc. No idea how these things work together but as your father in law doesn't work with external software the file properties in Windows might do for him.

I am using Windows 10.

HTH

Can he do it in Picasa?

I know it can be done in LR but I don't think it gets saved when you email it to someone. I'm no help & I feel like I should know!

How tech savvy is he? Is this someone who wants to fuss with metadata and software? 'Cause if it was my mother asking, she'd want an answer like "Type it in a Word document and save it in the folder with the photos." LOL. Another low-tech answer would be to put it in the file name "12-15 Jane and Tim in NY (01).jpg", though that doesn't work for large groups.

haha - yeah, so far that is what Dave told him to do - add the name of people to the file name. One would think that all these years of digital photos, this wouldn't be hard to do... well, not hard if you have software to do it in, haha...

I've done this on both a PC and Mac. On PC I used Bridge and added Keywords - they carried over beautifully (both into Flickr and into Photos (Mac) when I got my Mac). I think you can do this just through properties, or maybe with Gimp.

On my Mac I add keywords in the Info (command-I), you can do several at once, so part of my end-of-month stuff now is to go through my photos for the last month, delete duplicates/blurry, etc, and tag. Takes maybe 20 min a month, and I can put someone's name in the search and you can see pics with only that person in it. I'm slowly working backwards too, to catch up the rest of my photos.

Thank you! I'll try this!
