Default ??? External hard drives & Mozy...

So my computer has been soooo slow lately and I finally looked and OMG my computer is almost FULL!!! How did that happen!!!

So I sooo need to get an external hard drive so I can keep buying scrapping stuff LOL

Here is the one I saw at Best Buy

I really know nothing about them....
320 GB sounds like a lot LOL and I really don't want to spend a TON of $$$ either!

NOw the other really big question is that MOZY backs up my computer or well atleast my pics and scrapping supplies...what or how do I change things so mozy backs up the EHD too...

THANK YOU.....................
Kim....

It should automatically detect it, BUT...I think that if you remove it from your computer and put it on your hard drive, it will have to reupload the files, it doesn't know to just move it, kwim. At least, that's what I understood.

I downloaded Mozy and paid for a month...then found out I couldn't use it anway, lol (I've got a 10GB bandwidth limit and only the basics was over 16GB to backup...but my 300GB is nearly full...it would take me literally YEARS to backup, lol).

ugh I hope it doesn't have to re-upload everything...
it seriously took MONTHS... 4 or something more to do everything and that was leaving it on for around the clock for a lot of it!!!!

off to check it out more...

but the EHD sounds decent?

Yes, Mozy will have to reupload everything once you change to your ehd. Also if you ever have mozy start when your ehd is not on it will delete all the files that were on your ehd so you have to reupload those again. I learnt that the hard way! So make sure your ehd is ON before starting a backup!

THe ehd looks okay but I've seen much better deals out there I got my 500gb one for under 100$ I would shop around.

Costco has some great deals on EHDs, especially if you use their coupons that come out monthly. I'm eyeing a 1 Terabyte one right now.

I got this EHD recently from Amazon and like it a lot:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012GQZZU

It's a little cheaper than the one you listed above.

I *love* Mozy. I backup my computer and ehd at least a couple times per week. I've just set it to turn off the automatic updates. So, I manually start my update when I have my ehd connected. And if I happen to go more than a week without updating, it shoots me a reminder. The initial backup was a pain, but now everything is super easy!

well I hit our local Fred Meyer (closest place) and got something really similar to this:
http://www.amazon.com/500GB-My-Book-...696992&sr=1-11

Western Digital My Book 500gb
$150

I really need to just get something right away...
portable yes
I think it comes on w/ the computer....

but I like the idea of turning the automatic off and then just manually doing it weekly!

that looks like it needs to be plugged into an outlet so I wouldn't consider it portable, although you could just move it around with the laptop and plug it in wherever you plug the laptop in.

The Toshiba one you posted first powers off the computer via USB so you don't need a separate AC adapter.

1TB scares me. I just think of losing 1TB worth of stuff at once, ack.

okay so lets think this one out....

I don't have a laptop, so it will be pretty much just sitting on the desk w/ the desktop computer (just need more "space" to store stuff) =)

so help me w/ my ignorance.....
if it is plugged in and hooked up to the computer, then it is on when the computer is on right?

and if it is really only going to be w/ the desktop is one better than the other

argh I wish I "got" this stuff more!!!! .....

now off to look at what Costco has.... =)

oh okay, if you're on a desktop and aren't planning on moving your EHD around then the WD MyBook should be fine. I thought since you were looking at the Toshiba one you wanted a portable one. Pricewise, I think you'd get a better deal with a desktop model. You just have to make sure you have an available outlet.

I use Mozy to backup my PC and my EHD. Prior to getting my new PC I had my EHD hooked up to my DH's laptop and it took almost exactly 2 months to do the initial backup for over 200GB of photos, music and scrap stuff. Now I've moved my EHD over to my new computer and I am having to do the initial backup again but it is going SO much faster this time. Not sure if it's because this computer has 3gb of RAM where the laptop only had 512MB or what but its over halfway done already and its only been about 2.5 weeks or so. And I've been leaving it running nonstop most of the time cause even when its running in the background you can't even tell a difference in the speed of the computer. On the laptop I had to turn it off when I was using it otherwise the laptop moved at a snail's pace!

Also the person I emailed back & forth with from Mozy CS was really nice. Since I didn't want to just delete the entire backup I'd already done on the laptop (just in case something should happen to my EHD in the time it takes for the new PC to backup) she told me they would refund the monthly fee for the 2nd computer for however many months it takes for it to finish and then I can delete the laptop backup & only have to pay for 1 computer each month after that.

hmm, last time I was @ Costco . . .
they had a Maxtor 500gb I think
Passport Elite 320 gb (but I don't think you'd want this. it's a portable one)
and some WD ones . . . 500 and maybe the 1TB. They def had they 1TB in stock at some point. I just can't remember if there were any in the warehouse when I went.

I've seen some SimpleTech ones there too.

everytime I go to Costco I look at the EHDs LOL.

If you have the "Member Passport to Savings Coupon book Summer 2008" from Costco, it has a coupon for $30 off the 1 Terabyte Western Digital one and that brings it to $199 Coupon says it's only good June 16-22.

I have the one you showed from Amazon, the 500 Gig Western Digital My Book, and am real happy with it except that I'm running low on space. I'm sure I could solve that by deleting stuff though!

I have a laptop and since I don't go mobile very often, I find it just fine to have a non-portable EHD like the My Book. Since it has it's own fan and everything, I think it's a better choice for desktop computers. The smaller portable EHDs just plug into the computer and don't need an electrical plug which is great for laptops that go mobile. Actually, maybe I should think about getting a portable EHD now that I think of it! LOL

I don't know if they will give you one at Customer Service, but it's worth asking for! I think mine came last week. It's like 4x8" and has a blue cover. And if you look about half way in, there is also a coupon for $5 off a box of HUGE bakery cupcakes

Thanks for the tip re: Costco. We get the coupons when we walk through the door (they don't send them out in the mail) here...so I'll have to see if I can get in there!

I didn't know about Mozy...we were looking at online storage but it seemed very expensive so we opted for a second EHD instead. So with Mozy would I be able to backup an EHD? I imagine I could since its just a drive on my computer...am I right?

I love the Passports and am mad/bummed I didn't get one. With the mail around here, I would not be at all surprised if someone else got mine, waah.

and cupcake coupon? I'm even more sad . I will hope I get one tomorrow. In addition to getting other people's mail, I also get mail after the requested delivery date .

I have the Western Digital My Book for my desktop computer and it's wonderful. I have everything backed up on it and it's been great. Mine is only 250 though, so I wish I had bought a bigger one.

I also have a Western Digital Passport for my laptop. Again, it's only a 250 and with all the great kits here to purchase, it's going to fill up fast. LOL

Good luck!

Yup Mozy will backup your EHD as long as its plugged into your PC every time you run a backup. I've been using it for several months now & have been very happy with it. And for only $4.95/month that is probably cheaper than all the DVD's it would take me to manually backup all my photos & digi stuff every month!
