Almost the Perfect Photo

Paradise Springs

Description: We don't really have theme parks here, so this was the best I could do. Journalling~ When we were staying in Rotorua to catch up with Auntie Suzanne and Emma, Daddy and I took you to Paradise Springs. They have lots of animals there, especially native New Zealand ones. You were totally enthralled by everything you saw. They had lots of trout streams, all full of fish. We bought some food pellets at the entrance kiosk and you loved throwing them into the water and watching the trout come swarming to eat them. Description: Journalling~ Life's a bit tough when your toys won't do what you tell them to! Part of Marcus' bathtime ritual is that either he or one of the bath toys will pull out the plug to let the water out. Tonight, when I asked him who was going to pull out the plug, he chose a toy fish. So he has the fish positioned at the top of the chain ready the pull and he's sitting there saying dramatically "Don't pull it out! Don't pull it out!". Pam's Birdbath

Description: Journalling~ Pam's birdbath does a whole lot more than bathe common garden birds. The garden has been lucky enough to be a favourite visiting spot for kereru this summer, with the beautiful native pigeons stopping off for a drink in the birdbath. This one is thought to be a baby, as he (or she) still has a little trouble with the landing and balancing. Of course, the sparrows, fantails and starlings all enjoy a bath as well, and occasionally a bit of a water fight as the birds try to establish who has precedence. It's also a favourite playground for visiting children. Pam often has to rush outside and tip out the old water the birds have used and put in fresh before a small boy arrives with a boat, as Paul is doing here. I've seen a whole procession of children do exactly this, often several of them at once, which is a bit of a challenge, as it isn't the biggest boat sailing venue ever constructed. Who ever said a birdbath had to limit its rasion de'etre according to the whim of its original inventor? Description: Journalling~ Yum Cha at The Albert, 9th April 2007 We went to Palmerston North for Easter this year and on our last day, Grandad Len decided to take everyone out for lunch. He wanted to try the lunchtime Yum Cha at a local restaurart and hadn't had enough people to take to make it worthwhile before. (As your Daddy said, Yum Cha for one doesn't really work.) So the three of us, Granny and Grandad and Aunty Sally all went out for lunch. We knew you wouldn't really want to eat Yum Cha dishes, so we started off by ordering you a bowl of rice and asking for a spoon. I thought the spoon was a good idea, but you weren't convinced. Everyone else at the table had chopsticks to eat with, and since there were some beside your plate as well, you were determined to be just like the grownups and eat with yours. Rice isn't easy to eat with chopsticks at the best of times, and even harder when you are three and still getting the whole pincer grip thing sorted out. All the same, you gave it your best shot and managed surprisingly well. You were also very cute to watch and I asked Daddy to take some photos of you using them. Doomed

Description: The "doomed" in the jouranlling is a family in-joke. I'm thinking of doing a general page to explain it that won't be part of Marcus' birth album (as this one will be). Journalling~ Doomed to be an Aucklander... Marcus is doomed to be an Aucklander. They started him on caffeine yesterday. The doctor said it is very rare for as early a baby as he is to avoid it. Consequently, he has been taken off the CPAP and he certainly seems happy no longer having the prongs up his nose. It's also really nice for us, as we can now see his little face. The weather is appalling today, meaning it took twice as long to get to the hospital, so we only got to stay for about half an hour this morning. (Dave has had to go to meetings at work this afternoon, meaning we had a timetable to get back home.) However, we're planning to go in again tonight, so we're hoping to have more time then. Next week, when Dave is back at work properly, I'll probably go in and stay a few hours each day. There's space beside the incubator for me to sit and read a book or something, as well as a parents' lounge if I need to take a rest, so it'll be easier to go slow than to rush. I'm Sorry

Description: Journalling~ Last week, I saw the ENT for the results of your oximetry test. He said that while your breathing issues weren't critical, your oxygen uptake was really quite bad and he wants to take out your adenoids and tonsils as soon as possible. He wants to do it at Starship because they have an ICU on hand if it is needed. You see, the pressure is so high when you breathe that your body will need time to adjust to the smaller effort required to breathe once the obstruction is removed. There is a very small chance that this could lead to you dragging fluid into your lungs at first before you adjust. They will need to monitor you, and take you to ICU if that does happen. Last night, you were upset and I let you fall asleep in our bed with me. I was lying there, listening to you breathe and I realised that I could hear how hard you were working to draw air into your lungs with each breath. I am just horrified that I didn't figure this out months ago. It's been like this since you were little, you've been having apneas all along as well, but because I'd got used to that when you were in the NICU, I just ignored it and chalked it up to being normal for you. I am so very, very sorry that I didn't figure it out sooner. I could have done something earlier and made your life so much better before now. I wish I'd been a bit quicker on this, but I wasn't and all we can do now is get on with fixing the problem. Little Things

Description: Journalling~ I know it's silly, but these little scars on your hands make my heart hurt each time I catch sight of them. You have them on both hands, and on both your feet as well. They are from all the blood tests, IV lines, heel pricks, blood transfusions and the like that you've had in your little life. When I see them, I remember how hard it was to let people stick so many holes in you, even though I knew how important it was. The very worst was the silly doctor who tried three times to give you a lumbar puncture and three times to put in an IV line and failied at them both. Every time. I know it isn't very Christian of me, but I think there's a small piece of me that hasn't ever forgiven him for that. DS has been fascinated watching the caterpillers grow, then watching each chrysalis until a butterfly appears.
