Only a handful of permanent residents live there today, but in the last decades of the 19th century, it was the heart of one of the most vibrant gold mining districts in the world, and a major influence in shaping the prosperity of a newly founded state. It was a lovely and very interesting trip. Quite scary that only a couple of days later this historic township was seriously threatened by bushfires.

So I spend hours searching for ingredients, cardboard, baking tins and all other supplies I needed. Although I love cooking and baking I am always afraid of decorating the cake with icing or chocolate because it went horribly wrong a few times! This time I got everything from a bakery supplier and the cake turned out pretty well, except that our cat Leo played fetch with one of the palm trees after I took the picture. When cutting the cake at Sophia's party every child demanded a special piece of cake, whether it was a piece of the pink icing, a piece with a flower, a leaf or even a piece of the island. Somehow I managed to sacrify each child and everybody agreed that it was a great birthday party.
