Gustav is one of the handful of possessions my heart is tied to. When I was a little girl living in Germany my parents found him on the floor of a shop janitorial closet. They convinced the owner to sell them the clock for a pittance. If you take him down you can see where mice snacked on him, I’m sure there was a good amount of polishing and cleaning up involved. The clock moved around in my childhood home and ended up in storage for a while as well. When Ken and I bought our house my mom gave Gustav to us as a housewarming present. We have a spot above our mantle that seems to have been made just for him, I don’t think he’ll ever move, Ken and the girls have come to love him as well. I think he’s beautiful, I love the clean lines of the wood and that the ornate is reserved for his face and pendulum. His chimes are lovely, and while often times we don’t really hear them, they’ve become household background noise, we definitely notice when they’re absent. It turns out that he’s a true antique from a highly respected clock maker, his value to me is not monetary, I don’t care about mice nibbles and scratches, I look at him and I’m reminded of my
childhood and of the home that we have created for our children. Somewhere along the way he has come to represent home to me.
