Before this weekend, I would have said that my dream was to be able to give you the wisdom of my years; for you to understand at this tender age that it doesn’t matter what other people say or think, that kindness and honesty are more important than any amount of money, that your imagination is your greatest treasure.

In the moments before our plane had to make an emergency landing, I watched helplessly as we neared the ground and the fleet of fire trucks awaiting us. My only dream, my only thought, my only prayer, was to keep you safe.

Your fierce independence is something that makes me very proud, but it terrifies me, too. I know that all too soon I won’t be able to hold you by the hand and protect you. My dream is that you will always stay out of harm’s way. I know it isn’t possible, we all have bumps and bruises throughout our lives, but it is my dream.
