"We have always been a family that loves to travel. With Dad being a truck driver by trade, it was natural that we would go on lots of road trips. And boy did we ever! We didn’t even need a special occasion to travel. Waking up one Saturday and deciding we Felt like shopping in
Toronto was reason enough for a 5 hour drive! We have driven all across Canada, from coast to coast. In 1992 we drove all the way to Victoria, B.C. and back in 2 weeks! There were lots of 14 hour days in the car. I have my
parents to thank for my ability to spend a whole day in a car without getting bored, stiff, or having to pee! By far the most memorable road trip was in 1999 when we drove to St. John’s, Newfoundland. I was 18. On our 2nd day out, just outside of Montreal, we went to a Pizza Hut for dinner and when we came out, the van was empty. We were robbed! We lost everything. seven thousand
dollars of possessions. Our best clothes (we were packed for 2 weeks!), our cd’s, dan’s expensive scuba gear, my mom’s purse. It was devastating. We got a hotel that night in MOntreal (thankfully dad had a credit card in his pocket!) and we had to decide: do we go home, or
continue with nothing? I’m proud to say that we continued.
We went shopping for a few necessities the next morning and then it was back on the road! And it was the best trip ever! It taught me to value experiences more than possessions. I will never forget that trip!
I am so grateful to my parents for bringing us out on the road during our childhood, and starting us at such a young age. It really instilled a love of travel and sense of adventure that still burn within me today. I am
definitely going to do the same with my own kids!"
